I genuinely never understood the obsession people have with the following mechanic. It really doesn't affect the gameplay in any significant manner, and aesthetically it's barely noticeable. It's such a nothingburger. What was weirder was seeing normalfags gushing over the mechanic returning in swsh despite how much it looked like shit.
>>59237784For real. When I first saw it my reaction was "Oh, that's neat." And has never wavered. I actually disliked more about it than I liked, mainly that you can't set the follower and it has to be your leader.
>>59237784It's nice to have your guys out and watch them follow you.If I was a trainer in-universe, I would probably have all my 6 out most of the time like a personal entourage and only get them in their balls when there is little space for them like in a subway.I also liked the gen 6 and 7 petting features where you could carress their beautiful fur or clean them of dirt after fighting.
>>59237784That’s fine everything isn’t meant for everyone
>>59237784Because Pokémon’s gameplay so barebones and has evolved so little in 30 years that a sprite following the player and making a text bubble pop up is genuinely revolutionary. And of course game freak fucked up the feature in Swooshit, not only by completely fucking up the speed of most mons, not only by making it convoluted to even use when a simple on/off would have legit been enough, but Pokémon don’t even interact with the environment or give gifts.
>>59237784>aesthetically it's barely noticeablehow, it's a completely different sprite you have control over
>>59237784>and aesthetically it's barely noticeableA whole sprite or model always trailing behind you in the overworld isn't barely noticeable. Incorporating Pokemon into the overworld is really the crux of why the mechanic was so popular in HGSS, when you're usually only seeing them in battle or in a menu. Seeing Pokemon roaming about is a highlight of the Switch games imo
It's about on the same level as character customization. Which is to say that it really doesn't add much of anything but it's a decent optional inclusion. Like does having a blue shirt really matter over a red shirt? What annoyed me in HGSS was that you couldn't turn following Pokémon off. What if I wanted to play like the originals and throw the Poké Ball out instead of have a Pokémon slide in? Other than that, I was more impressed by the fact that they made overworld sprites left/right/up/down with two frames of animation, proper asymmetry, forms, and shininess all accounted for. The shiny leaf thing is also a fun little quest, though the flavor text for different Pokémon in specific areas is a lot more boring than I would have thought. At any rate, not including following Pokémon is at most a "Eh" to me, I don't care enough to complain and I think people who do have a fit about it are just really austistic about roleplaying as Ass Ketchup with their shouldermon. The shitty constant presence of friendly rivals is probably to make players feel like they have Brock and Misty too. Another big L for the franchise because of the anime.
>>59237784its bad in the 3d games because they dont stay behind your sprite and fall behind and teleport around everywhere and feel clunky nobody likes it in 3dgo back to 2d please
>>59237794Depends on the game; LGPE and I think BDSP do let you set a follower that's not first in your party. Ironic that it's those two games.
>>59237881>It's about on the same level as character customization. It really isn't.
>>59237902Neither really does anything other than being purely aesthetic fluff akin to flavor text. Magma Armor/Flame Body being able to hatch eggs in half the time is a much more significant gameplay inclusion that has real benefits.
>>59237894Oh yeah, I remember now. Bdsp had following pokemon too, and it looked like absolute shit kek. This fanbase is cattle.
>>59237784>I have autism and no soul
>>59237913cant wait for the platinum version they will release for switch 2 with the fold out screen accessory for 3ds/ds emulation this christmas
>>59237911Character customization actually makes your character look unique compared to others (or at least it should on paper). Following pokemon at best just serve as an extra accessory for your character customization, but they're definitely not on the same level.
>>59237956>a dozen clothing options>1000 pokemonThe pokemon are the more unique choice.
>>59237962You can't have all the 1000 pokemon in one game anymore kek
>>59237971holy esl
>>59237784it's cute
>>59237956>Makes your character look uniqueI promise you that there is not a single customized character in Pokémon that I remember or care about. I don't even use the option because it doesn't change anything and the official default designs are typically more memorable. Once again, it's the difference between wearing a red shirt and a blue shirt. It's aesthetic, it's like reading a Pokédex entry. It doesn't do anything or affect how you interact with the game, and it wasn't even in the games for the first 17.5 years of their existence. That's how irrelevant it is to the core Pokémon experience.
>>59237784This game is called pokemon, so naturally I want to interact with my pokemon outside the battle screen.
>>59237784>thing remade in 3d abomination games looks like shitMany such cases in Pokemon.
>>59237784These games are so ridiculously shallow, even at their best, that taking away anything that gave them a little charm grates harder than it would if the games were actually good.
>>59237802>If I was a trainer in-universe, I would probably have all my 6 out most of the time like a personal entourage and only get them in their balls when there is little space for them like in a subway.this is like taking six dogs for a walk without any leashes
>>59237902you're rightpokemon are way more important, impactful and emotionally investing than swapping some clothes
>>59237784I thought it was charming in HGSS because they had nice little sprites that fit the style but in most games I just turn it off. 3D is especially bad because you just yank a static model around on a fucking rope
>>59237980>>59238158Kek you're an autistic moronYou don't even know what esl means
>>59237784>soul>soul>3d but still soulfull>KILL IT WITH FIRE! WHAT THE FUCK WERE THEY THINKING
>>59237784>4channer unable to understand the concept of W H I M S YNothing new here
>>59238209>can't tell anons apartGuess you're an expert on autism.
>>59238242Nta but even I can tell you're samefagging
>>59237784It's just very neat
>>59237913>As you know pokemon have the miraculous power to shrink
>>59238270>I'm not him but I just happen to capitalize my acronyms the same waykek
>>59238270NTA but I'm the second reply and that was my first post ITTI don't care about the blank slate protagonist bro this is Pokemon not Trainermon, anything to do with Pokemon will always take importance over that of the human characters especially in regards to silly little visual frills
>>59238301Bro is this pokemon real
>>59238330Yes, you can get it in the safari zone by walking into one of the rocks 50 times (this represents bashing your head against it), turning around 3 times and stepping into the nearest tile of grass!
>>59238341Thats so dumb man i glad i never bought any after Diamond
>>59238354>he's still licking the honey trees for munchlaxoh no no no no
>>59238288Half of the people itt write like that you retard kek
>>59237784Yellow and LGPE did it the best.
>>59237784>It really doesn't affect the gameplayIt doesn't have to, it's a game for kids and they wanna see their favorites walk alongside them>and aesthetically it's barely noticeableIt was barely noticeable people wouldn't obsess over it
>>59238330>>59238341>>59238354>>59238361You're not funny.
>>59237784HGSS was the only game that did it right because it had bunch of small interactions sometimes exclusive for particular nature or type of Pokemon. Yeah, it'd mostly text bubble telling you how your Pokemon behave, but it worked well because entire game is sprite-based and naturally everything is experienced using imagination and abstraction.
>>59238093>the official default designs are typically more memorableThey aren't lolMaybe you lack creativity to properly customize your character but any decent change will look way better than the dogshit MC designs from last gens.
>>59239182Your OC Sonic Forces designs are not going to be remembered over the official ones.
>>59237784People like the immersion.
>>59237859It barely does anything for the aesthetic. It's just a sprite.
>>59238382You have brown skin
>>59238183HGSS is really the only game in which following pokemon looks good, unsurprisingly that’s usually the game people are talking about when they say how great the feature is
>>59239662common HuGeSucceSs win
>>59239353You’re going to be looking at the player character sprite for a good chunk of the game, more so than any overworld element solely there for aesthetics or atmosphere, like those flowers or windmills in OP’s gen 4 screenshots. If you consider following Pokemon an extension of the player character, I’d say it’s contributing a lot to the aesthetic of the game.
It worked in HGSS since the sprites fit the abstract chibi overworld and it was of the many features in those game that made it so special. When I see how its implemented in BDSP or Sw/Sh it looks fucking awful and janky
