I think it can’t be overstated how disappointing the games were as someone who saw the game develop from gen 1 to gen 2. All the new features added in that short timespan really let my imagination run wild for what the next gen could do on a new handheld. And then it regressed. It pretty much killed all hope I had for the series. It was still going to be Pokemon and so I’d still enjoy it, but I could stop imagining the series taking great leaps forward.

I was there. Marill would probably be the poster child for "cuteification," but people were counting down the days until they could catch "Pikablu."Johto's dex itself wasn't the problem, it's that actually finding a Johto Pokemon in Johto was like finding a needle in a haystack. TPC and GF basically swept anything new under the rug to keep shilling the old shit and it made the franchise look like it was out of ideas when it wasn't. It's why gen 3 was designed to be more of a clean break.
