The real issue which has nothing to do with what you posted; Gen I backsprites that don't look anything like the Pokemon don't look any more like their Green sprites than their Blue or Yellow sprites.
The issue is that for some inexplicable reason they drew them and then zoomed in on them by a fuck load, which is why they appear so pixelated. It was done to provide "perspective" in the battle scene but I don't know why nobody stepped in and told Tajiri that it looked like absolute shit.

originally the front facing sprites were also blown up like the back sprites, but they did some kind of optimization to allow themselves to have more detailed sprites, they just never got around to doing it for the back sprites.

The back sprites gave you the comfy illusion of fighting from your party's perspective.
It was nice when they eventually added the animation of Pokemon looking back at you.
