Playing through fire red has given me a newfound appreciation for basically every modern pokemon game (outside of graphics and performance)>like 40 pokemon that don't learn a stab move through level up>breeding locked till post game>most unique egg moves are locked to pokemon you can't get in either game anyway>mon distribution and balance is straight dogshit, 90% of the best pokemon are available before the 3rd gym while garbage like farfetchd is limited to one per game>exp share locked till 5th gym, so leveling anything but 1 pokemon is a chore (not that the games are hard enough to need more than 1-2 pokemon its mainly for dex)>no running shoes till after the first gym>limited tms>no real move tutors>dozens on dozens of trainers that have nothing but weedle caterpie ratatta zubat
It's amazing how half this shit isn't a problem in the original RGB, they were retroactively made into problems thanks to Masuda's game design
>>59261465everything except breeding is the same or worse in the originals and that's only because breeding didn't fucking exist
>>59261462>breeding locked till post game>most unique egg moves are locked to pokemon you can't get in either game anywayNon issue
>>59261462>>exp share locked till 5th gym, so leveling anything but 1 pokemon is a chore (not that the games are hard enough to need more than 1-2 pokemon its mainly for dex)Why are you tying to complete the dex before the 5th gym?Are you doing an Oak Challenge?
>>59261467The only mons that struggle with STAB in Gen I are Fire types and Pidgeot. The lack of Steel and Dark means you can get away with running Normal as coverage for 90% of mons since they haven't power crept Normal into being pointless yetDistribution in Gen I was unironically better, Masuda made it worse for some reason in FRLG. You could get Nidorans before Brock in Gen I while in FRLG they were moved to a route after Brock. Plus he neutered the Fossils for no reason when they were balanced around only needing 10 levels to evolve and you get them by the end of the gameEXP Share doesn't exist in Gen I and the game's pacing is genuinely really good so your team will be pretty consistent up until the Elite 4 when the levels spike. This is a problem with almost all Pokemon gamesThe map is smaller so running shoes isn't a necessity, it's REALLY easy to get places in Kanto compared to any of Masuda's regionsThe last point isn't even a real problem after Surge, must've gotten Johto confused with Kanto
>>59261475magikarp, abra, and a few others to lesser degrees are fucking worthless until you swap grind them to 20+>>59261473sure, but it being so limited makes the awful move distribution even more apparent>>59261482ekans doesnt get any poison move besides acid, at level THIRTY TWOsandslash doesnt get a ground move besides sand tomb at FIFTY TWOthere are only THREE rock moves
>>59261489Sounds like FRLG problems that weren't ever rectified. Lots of Poison types in Gen I don't really get good STAB to begin with, but Poison STAB before Fairy was introduced was very pointless to begin with (it's only good against Bug and Grass in Gen I). That's a problem that was almost never fixed. Try complaining about actual lack of STAB options like Scyther, Pinsir and Gengar, all of which still took 10 years to fixAs for Sandslash, there's a Dig TM that in Gen I was 100bp and you get for free. If you're running any Ground mons, and even if you aren't, there's literally zero reason not to use this TM if you desperately want STAB that badly. Otherwise run Dugtrio, it's actually in both games where as Sandslash is exclusive to not-Red. If finite TMs are a problem, MissingNo. is incredibly fucking easy to spawn so you can dupe TMs as much as you want>But muh glitchesIt's an option later games don't have and later games are MUCH stingier with TMs than Gen I is where you get Rock Slide for giving a 5 year old a coke
>>59261482> The map is smaller so running shoes isn't a necessity, it's REALLY easy to get places in Kanto compared to any of Masuda's regionsI feel like Kanto is the only region where it’s fine to completely skip fly. Every other region has at least one part, usually the evil team climax, where you have to do a lot of backtracking that’s a pain in the ass without fly.
>>59261489>magikarp, abra, and a few others to lesser degrees are fucking worthless until you swap grind them to 20+Isn't that literally the point, though?>sandslash doesnt get a ground move besides sand tomb at FIFTY TWOYou can buy Dig from Celadon. So just teach it the one you got from Cerulean.
>>59261500I did it when I was playing Gen I recently where Surge was like my 5th Gym after Koga and Blaine because it's just REALLY easy to trek from place-to-place in Kanto on foot and not feel like you're wasting time. Lots of routes are short and the only route close to a modern Pokemon route in terms of feeling like a gauntlet is Silent Bridge which I skipped in-case I needed to do grinding for other stuff later. Been doing a lot of silly bug manips to spawn in Pokemon with Trainer Fly glitch and evolving Pokemon without needing evolutionary stones. People overrate how bad the bugs in Gen I are, they make the game MORE fun. It's like those QOL hacks everyone adds to their games so they can enjoy Pokemon games again, except all in there in the original release
>>59261499>>59261508relying on dig for ground coverage feels about as shit as relying on fly for flying coverage, with the added benefit of still getting hit by earthquake. >scyther pinsir and gengar, all of which still took 10 years to fixat least scyther pinsir and gengar have decent stats for the time. and gengar has literally NEVER been bad regardless of stab. complaining about those 3 when shit like dewgong, victreebel, golduck, and rapidash exist is hilarious. stab aside, over half of the pokedex is just straight up outclassed by things you can catch before or shortly after celadon
>>59261515>EQ1. Earthquake doesn't hit Dig in Gen I, that was added in Gen II2. Dig had the EXACT same BP as Earthquake in Gen I (100) so its only "detriment" is being two-turns, which only matters during pvp to begin with since in-game trainers don't switch and the ones that do don't tend to have Flying types. Dig is banned in pvp settings anyway due to bugsDewgong, Victreebel, Golduck and Rapidash are actually good mons in the context of Gen I. They aren't Alakazam, Gengar, Tauros, Snorlax, Chansey God tier but it's also a game where you can take Raticate to the E4 and still win. If you're going to bitch about any Water types being bad, Kingler and Seaking are right there. And Rapidash has better utility than even Arcanine does in Gen I. It's the fastest Fire type and gets access to Stomp, Fire Spin and Agility while Arcanine gets... Take DownBesides a big problem with post-Gen I games is the lack of variety until mid-to-end game. You're stuck with useless shitmons nobody likes until Gym 4 while in Kanto you already have a plethora of interesting and unique mons to team build in. Since the game doesn't have real progression gates, the moment you hit Celadon you can really go anywhere you want without issue. It's something most Pokemon games wouldn't DARE to do because they have to tell a linear story where friendship beats evil for the 15th time (cause Kanto did it, but this time we have more words)
>>59261524we're talking about fire red and leaf green>but it's also a game where you can take Raticate to the E4 and still winyeah no fucking shit you can bring dogshit through any pokemon game and win, but that doesn't mean i want to wait until 63 to use anything but take down and bounce
>>59261530At least FRLG gives you the opportunity to get multiple Flamethrower, Ice Beam, Thunderbolt and Psychic TMs. Flamethrower didn't even have a TM in Gen I
>>59261500Johto is the same. The entire region pretty much opens when you reach Ecruteak. The only place that is kinda annoying to revisit is Azalea. It's either running around and getting through Union Cave or using Cut to get through that single tree in Illex Forest. And you will be revisiting Azalea daily if you plan to farm Apricorns. Besides that every important place can be easily reached from Goldenrod or Ecruteak.
>>59261462Before 3rd gym?NidokingAlakazamGyaradosThat's it isn't it? The rest suck.
>>59261570Johto almost gets it right but Masuda added this faggot to keep you out of Blackthorne until you do the gay story beats and he just magically disappears
>>59261575yes exactly. three of the best mons in the game + starter are available instantly, so getting to see shit like weezing and muk at the very end of the game when they're outclassed by route 2 nidoran evos feels awful
>90% of the best pokemon are available before the 3rd gym while garbage like farfetchd is limited to one per gamefuck you
>>59262241Actual Farfetch'd users report it's better than people think and would assume.
>>59261585Progression gates are ok.Issue is when that progression gate becomes permament obstacle keeping you from backtracking while at same time game makes effort to give you reason to constantly backtrack theough ir.That three in Illex Forest turns 10/10 region into 8/10. It's not ruining the game completely, but makes one of the side activities that is in the game so much more aggravating. Obviously it's not an issue if one is using Fly, but it's still pretty dumb.
>>59261462These games are kino filters, anyone that hates on them is confirmed braindead and shit tasteIf youre willing to take long ways and not fly/use flash you can explore almost the entire region after getting 2 badges
