>>59269315Exactly, the problem isn't the team, but the writing. For example, Leon is portrayed as the final boss almost from the beginning, but it's never justified. He wins simply because the script dictates it. His battles don't feel like he's a great strategist. For instance, I remember a Yu-Gi-Oh! clone anime where the protagonist observes a match between the top players in his world, champion vs. challenger. Even though the main character wasn't actually battling, it was symbolic since the challenger used a deck similar to the main character's. But here, the champion demonstrates how he has a counter for every strategy and wins not with power, but with ingenuity. That's how you build a wall for a protagonist.There's an animated short (twilight wings, i believe) that, in just a few seconds, shows the level of the battles between the global top trainers, and even though each Pokémon is defeated in one or two moves, you can feel the pressure. In contrast, in the anime, everything feels staged like a wrestling match.

The entire series was perfectly set up to let Ash use all his old mons through the World Coronation. Having it being a more episodic series where Ash travels to different regions and fights trainers with no real connecting threads. Ash could have had a different team every episode with no need to explain it (which is exactly what they did in the epilogue episodes). But no, the culmination to Ash's 20 year journey had most of his old mons watching him win with his new mons on a tiny ass TV screen
