I think Pokémon games should have two rivals:
One rival who picks the starter weak to you and is super relaxed and actually fiendly like Hau.
And another Rival who picks the starter strong against you and is an edgelord and a massive asshole, like Gary but even much worse.

They almost did that with Sw/Sh but they wrote Bede out of the story halfway through so you just have Hautwo the rest of the game and also it's Sw/Sh.

I like how his upbeat personality isn't one-note, he's capable of delivering bantz to others when others shit on him. Liked him better than Hop and Nemona.

Whenever Hau isn't on screen, the player should be asking "How many malasadas has Hau eaten for breakfast today?"

this would fit the coming-of-age narrative of the older gens really well while introducing conflict that isn't ridiculous in scale or family drama
>you're a kid, you've got friends, as you grow up, some friends turn out to be assholes
now i don't think every game should follow this formula, otherwise it loses what made it good (see: team skull into team yell the next gen) but it still has potential
