I want a Gary Oak anime; I want to see Kanto through his eyes. Yeah, he was arrogant, but he had skills. I really get the impression that he put in the work to catch and train his pokemon to greatness. Ash was much more immature by comparison.
You mean Shigeru. Also he was a shitter that jobbed in both leagues and gave up on being a trainer. Who the fuck is watching a show about that?
>>59274127I'd rather see a series about him as a researcher. Even though he was underused in JN he made the Project Mew stuff more enjoyable. But thank god they didn't force him into being Kanto champion just because his game counterpart was like they did with Iris.
>>59274387Yeah, and I don't want to be a sub elitist, but that's their most accurate character writing so...>Yeah, he was arrogantNot that much. 4kids changed his character to be more antagonistic to Ash. In the dub, he is more of a bully and openly views Ash as a loser, while in the original he's more of a frenemy who's just keeping Ash on his toes. And I can't confirm it since I don't know Japanese but apparently some of their dynamic was subtly implied to be gay, which is apparently more alluded to in some of the official manga, which doesn't directly confirm that dynamic for the anime, but it goes to show how significant AshxGary shipping was in Japan until Gary's retirement.I don't think Gary's dub personality/dynamic change was bad and even made him more memorable than his original personality, but it obviously wasn't the intended characterization the writers had in mind.
>>59274697You're really downplaying how antagonistic Gary is in the Japanese version during Kanto.
>>59274742Yeah you're right. I'm just saying the dub went further ahead with it. There's probably a lot of subtle social cues that would be interpreted as rude that I likely missed out on as a non-japanese. It could be as antagonistic as the dubbed version for all I know.
