I love regional variants. It makes each Pokémon species actually feel like its own family.
>>59275131Same, Regional Variants are fun and interesting idea. I like all of the ones shown in your image, I'd like having them in the games if they were official.
>>59275131It took me a while to understand why a Slugma regional was still Fire type
I feel like the fandom is done with new actual Pokémon and just wants new forms
>>59275287Because depending on the from the Pokemon can catch up to the ever growing powercreep. Stats and ability changes don't seem to be a thing at all anymore.Look at the difference in usage between stuff like H Samurott, A Ninetales and their original form.
>>59275335I never understood this argument. Pokemon get their abilities changed more than ever now. Some even get their stats changed and move pools get updated every game.A regional variant doesnt feel like an update to an old Pokémon. It just feels like a new one that borrows the design of an existing one.The reason regional forms are popular is because its a different version of something you are already familiar with or like. Thats it. It isnt deeper than that.
If they’re going to keep doing regional forms, they should make some type of item that can alter a Pokémon’s dna or something into another region’s form.It sucks having Muk or something as your bro that you’ve brought through all the games, just for it to get a better Alolan form that you can never have access to.There’s no reason such an item couldn’t exist in Pokemon with Bill and everything.
>>59275345incorrect take
>>59275335H-Samurott and A-Ninetales don’t do anything regarding the originals, which are still just as bad as ever. They’re a halfway non-commitment between either making a new mon or buffing an old one, since they now actively fight with the originals for a party slot in the comp scene and you can’t “turn” the originals into them. It’s not like Pelipper who actually got an ability that let it keep up with the powercreep, or Mandibuzz who benefitted heavily just from two move buffs.
>>59275287Because nobody likes the direction nu designs went in and would rather use a recolored Kantomon.
>>59275385G-Zapdos was not even remotely as substantial a “buff” to the mon as just the base form getting static was.
>>59275131I want entire new region being a collection of regional forms
>>59275345>I never understood this argument. Pokemon get their abilities changed more than ever now. Some even get their stats changedNo, actually. It rarely happens now. It was only significant during gens 6 and 7. I assume you meant that abilities get some small updates from time to time. For the movepools, true. But it most cases the addition aren't enough to bring relevancy.
>>59275398He didn't say all regional forms were buffs.
>>59275417Them cutting back on buffing stats and changing abilities does line up with the first introduction of regional variants in gen 7. They may as well be considered "buffs", I guess.
>>59275131I love that muk and grimer. Though the mini-volcano on the muk's body would be cooler if it was shifted down to it's forehead so it could easily launch lava at targets.
Misdreavous and Misstress
>>59275366
>>59275269that ""walrein"" is the worst thing I have ever seen
>>59275131On one hand, it seems lazy or conservative, simply reusing a design and giving it a fresh coat of paint. This is from the perspective of Pokémon as an artistic creation, not a biological entity. But on the other hand, it awakens my nostalgia for old RPGs where, due to memory limitations, you only had to change the sprite's color palette and a few stats to create a new creature. For example:A brown horse with a flowing mane is your base monster or even a mount for an NPC.Change the color to shades of green, now it's a Kelpie.Change the color to black with a fiery blue mane, now it's a Nightmare.Change to cream and golden fire mane, now it's a Russian Fire Horse (I don't remember the name).Change to blue with a white mane, now it's a Hippocampus.Change the color of the mane in certain areas to simulate little wings, now it's a Pegasus. Change to pure white with a golden tuft of hair resembling a horn; now it's a Unicorn.Change to a mix of white, black, and gold; now it's a Kirin. Change to shades of gray where the details are lost, leaving only the silhouette; now it's a Specter.Changes from a normal horse to a talking NPC; now it's a Houyhnhnm.
>>59275269In this case, I prefer a convergent Spheal to revive a betamon
>>59275554A bonus if the final form ends up being a smilodon.
>>59275502
>>59275428> They may as well be considered "buffs", I guessThey are quite literally the opposite of buffs. All it does is create a stronger version of a Pokémon and replace it. Especially because they take up the species slot. In a competent company, this wouldn’t be an issue since the original would be buffed and regional forms would be more like sidegrade, but game freak is either stupid, lazy, or malicious so have run getting replaced instead of buffed
>>59275524I think its an alternate evo and not Walrein, based on Selkie, a mermaid like creature that wears the skin of a seal like a costume to transform into one while outside its just a normal girl, if you steal her "skin" she has to obey you.
>>59275287I dont like most new mons designs so i would make part of that group that yeah, if its between 100 new mons or 100 new regionals i would take the latter.
>>59275131Honestly why aren't the convergent species pokemon like Wigglets and Wugtrios regional variants? Or at least like alternate forms? It feels lazy to call it a new pokemon like how it is currently especially when they seem like they would fit well as an alternate variant.
>>59275670Since they are not part of the same family, it's not true regional. The case of Diglett and Wigglet is more a case of mimicry, where one species emulates the appearance of another. In this case, a monster eel mimics the appearance of a monster mole.A better example of convergence within Pokémon would be Rhyhorn and Lairon. Both Pokémon have similar anatomy and occupy a similar biological niche as large herbivores, but one is a mammal and the other a reptile, similar to real life where the triceratops, the rhinoceros, and the rhinoceros beetle arrived at a similar anatomical design thanks to convergent evolution.Cases like Bouffalant and Tauros represent parallel evolution, where species with a common ancestor develop similarly when affected by similar conditions, even if they are geographically separated.Meanwhile, regional forms represent divergent evolution, where species with a common ancestor develop differently when exposed to different environmental pressures.
>>59275269I like the mermaid design here, very reminiscent of the selkie, but instead of an alternative spheal-line evolution or counterpart to walrein it should be its own thing, maybe something like a natural predator like what mareanie is to corsola.
>>59275879By the way, ignore the picture I posted. I hadn't noticed it, but those examples are terrible. The wolf and the fox don't both descend from the wolf. All three species share a common ancestor from millions of years ago, but the wolf and the dog share a more recent common ancestor, while the fox diverged thousands of years ago.The examples of convergence are examples of homologous or comparative anatomy, not convergence. A better example of convergence is the wing of a bird, the wing of a bat, the wing of an insect, and the wing of a flying fish. The example of the elephant and the mammoth is a good illustration of parallel evolution, with some divergence. One adapted to thermoregulation in a desert climate and lost almost all its fur, while the other, in a cold climate, increased the density of its fur and reduced the areas exposed to the cold. However, both maintained a similar niche as large herbivores that use their trunks to feed on native flora. For coevolution, I would have chosen a cheetah and a gazelle, as it's easier to understand.I've included another diagram that I think explains the concepts more simply.
I hope we get more convergent Pokemon in WaWiI'd really like Cacnea like Snowman line, or a Horsea like Seaweed line
>>59275269I thought it was Seacows that got mistaken for mermaids, but I guess this isn't that far away from that concept.
>>59275879>>59275914Thanks for the explanation, to make sure I understand, the reason they are so similar is for the aspect of mimicry? Like Wiglett mimicking Diglett's appearence for getting prey and Tentacool mimicking Todescool?
I hate these things. They're regional varients given actual numbers just to pad out the dex. I hope covergent evolutions don't become a thing
>>59275287>I feel like the fandom is done with PokémonWe are. Let the series continue to cannibalize itself.
>>59275554please, GF
Water/Electric Frillish Regional FormA group of Frillish lived near an amusement park that was situated right on the coast line. It was easy access to food.Tourists would throw food towards the Frillish that managed to glow at night encouraging this adaptation.
>>59275535Underrated post. I don't have anything to add except "I agree".
>>59275519these are really ugly and annoying
>>59275511I mean, it's a cute idea, if not a little stolen from Mimickyu. But really what point would this have at all? Ditto's point is to get him out vs a pokemon he can outspeed and OHKO with Imposter. Transform is useless, which is why they presumably cancelled Animon (Presumably a failed effort to make a more defensive Ditto pre-imposter) and if you just give the thing Pikachu's stats and moves + Transform then none of that will be useful as Pikachu's stats without Light ball are shit and all you will want to do is transform it anyway. It probably wouldn't have imposter either because they'll try to lean more to Pikachu gimmick ones.
>>59275879that image is fucking annoying with how many errors it has. Figures a jeet made it.
>>59277127If you're creative it could give it its own competitive spin.Lets say it has Pikachu's stats (Would make sense), that would make it significantly faster than Ditto which makes transform a bit less painful. You'd have to be a bit strategic to transform it into something where it could tank turn 2 damage, but again, abilities could make that a decent tradeoff.Ability 1 could be auto-paralyze the opponent upon transformation, which gives a chance they won't be able to attack you at all on turn 2, and nerfs them pretty badly. Works with the design.Ability 2, maybe something that heals him a bit in certain conditions for the double battles.Hidden ability could be that paralyze one as that would actually be very good for him, or fuck it just give him imposter again if you really want to so it's an option. As for the Pikachu side, who's to say Light Ball can't work with him? Do that and you have a transforming Light ball Pikachu with his own quirks for transformation, which could be pretty damn good.
>>59275131They should make more regional variants of NFEs that evolve into unique pokemon. The ideas are endless
>>59275381the amount of people bringing the same pokemon through multiple games is exceedingly minimal, and thus you will not be pandered to
>>59275386Ninetales is still a very strong pokemon. It has drought
>>59277358Ninetales is outclassed by Torkoal as it can only use Sun for itself, not for team support.
>>59275131>what if an existing mon was uhh purple and had a cowlickThey’re creatively bankrupt, and another symptom of Gamefreak running out of ideas and passion for this franchise.
>>59277877nah, running out of ideas and passion for your franchise is when you put three genies that are literal palette swaps of each other in your dex
>>59275366>Legends elemageThe video series on that was kino.
>>59275224Is the Ampharos supposed to be part Water type or something else?
>>59279042My assumption would be Ice (it has the thick wool because it lives in cold places). Water doesn’t really makes sense from the design aside from just thinking blue things have to be water types
>>59275927We have a seaweed Horsea, its name is Skrelp
>>59275287fakemon have been made since the franchise began 3 decades ago. Alt forms not for Rotom were fringe (read: cringe) until gen 6 and 7.Also there's that one interview where they basically said "we looked at all the fake Mega Flygons and yeah we would only disappoint you " that lives on in infamy

I liked pokemon Fools Gold for some of their remixing of types, but Electric/Dragon kingdra in particular. A rain team with Swift Swim kingdra blasting off hydropumps and a kingdra firing off perfectly accurate Thunders with electric terrain would be dope as hell
>>59275131regional variants are one of the worst inclusionsyou cant have a "Alolan vulpix" show up in the wild anywhere other than Alola or "Paldean wooper" which would also lock out clodsire from appearing anywhere elseand some of the choices to make them "migratory" are also dumb as shitwhat happens when they inevitably want to make a Scandinavian region and want to include perrserker and runerigus due to their obvious Viking insperation but cant add them cause of the regional variants having "Galarian" attached to them?hope wind and waves doesnt have any dying coral reefs or palm trees, cause there are a pair of regional variants that could have gone really well in there but cant cause they have another region literally branded onto themthis is why convergent mon' are better despite non of them actually looking as cool as any regional variants - at least wugtrio can appear in another game without a retarded explanation as to why you catch "Paldean dugtrio" anywhere other than Paldea
>>59279811Uh sure you can dipshitYou just pick one or the otherYou know Canada Geese live in the US too right? It doesn’t make them American GeeseYou’re actually a fucking idiot complaining about a problem that doesn’t exist

>>59279811yeah the convergent mons are just what regional variants should have been in the first place. having their own names and numbers is way better than sandshrew with no sand
>>59279811they could just add them and not explain it. An Alolan Vulpix could be in a scandi region perfectly fine - "This regional form of Vulpix is also found here in the Ylili region.
