Only similarity between Irida and Serena I could find is the shorter hair style and color, but it's still worth mentioning.

Something also interesting to point out is that both May's and Irida's names in Japanese share the letter カ.

Like how Dawn's Japanese name Hikari and Akari (in English) sound strikingly similar. But then again it really a stretch and I might be comparing apples to oranges, as the Dawn / Akari example doesn't apply to Lucas and Rei, and it could be also just a fancy coincidence due to the English translation. And in the case of May and Irida, it's basically pointing out that two names share the same two letters in the same order, which is a weak connection.
