>Do you think a PMD game should start you with a party of three instead of a party of two, or is the duo dynamic too ingrained into the series?
An interesting idea, and something that GTI and Super have played with, using story recruits and story dungeon guests. The main issue would come to making characters that can be picked from the same starter pool distinguisable. In any PMD you can tell the hero appart for being the one that's controled and doesn't talk in cutscenes, and the partner as the one not in control who does the talking. This second factor would apply to a 3rd party member, so even if you give them diferent personalities, you'd have to pay attention to the dialogue once it comes up to tell the 2nd parter appart from the 3rd partner.
It could be that your 1st partner picks fromt the same player pool, and any other parter there after appears later in the game and uses a diferent species pool (be it you choose it from a menu, or there's a small cast of characters and you get to add one). The former would cause people to whine "why can't my hero be eevee if xhe is in the 2nd partner pool", the latter option would make integrating them into the story hard if the characters have different personalities from each other, make selecting one bland if their personalities are overall the same, and it feels similar to what Gates was going for.

>What dungeon theme is your favorite in any of the PMD games?
Infinite Dungeon 2 from Gates, kick ass remix of the magnagate theme. Really cool that it only plays ocasionaly in Path Of No Return (Gates' lv 1 reset dungeon). Also enjoy it in Heart Lake in Super, makes me not be upset about it being a long dungeon cos I get to hear it.

>What was your favorite or least favorite part of PSMD?
For as much shit that Super gets in here, there are plenty of things I like about it, be it defining the Pokémon world trough the world map, having missions tied to specific pokémon, and said missions being the way you can obtain all gen VI mons. But I'll say emeras as the best form of passive effects in the series, they manages to both make you strong, but they don't end up trivializing the remaining of the game due to loosing them at the end of each dungeon (as opposed to say, getting map surveior + stair sensor in EoS). As much as getting every pokémon is good, too bad you can't fucking use them, thanks to the days off shit. It has the opposit effect in that instead of using a varied team each day, you resort to hero + partner + some 3rd wheel cos those 2 are the only ones you always have access to, who are mostly just fire/water/grass starters with little diferentiation withing each type. Something that's less discussed is that how often a pokémon takes days off seems to be tied to how big's the level diference between the hero and that pokémon, and since most hero options are starters (medium-slow exp), many pokémon will inevitably end up gaining more levels than your hero due to the universal exp share. This is only if they started at or bellow your level. If you recruited a pokémon when they already had a level lead on you, they might aswell be a fucking criptid.

>What's the dungeon you've gone into most in the series? Did you do it for grinding, items, recruits?
Either one of Sky Tower or Stormy Sea in DX. Basicaly just to grind online friend rescues, not only cos some of them give high amounst of stat and move boosters (so grinding), but also cos it's fun to help people out. Those two in particular often have a couple of teams at the last floor awaiting rescue due to having whiped to Rayquaza/Kyogre.

On my somewhat recent run of rescue team it was probably Uproar forest, since my retarded ass peeled the chestnut the first time around, and later on I grinded it for gummis to gummimax a Heracross.

As kid with explorers I would just pick random easy missions even after beating the game, so probably Beach Cave or Amp Plains.

How would dynamax work in PMD? I could imagine it being a temporary powerup requiring an item, like megas in Super, and you'd probably be able to smash walls so you can make shortcuts and don't get stuck in corridors.
On that topic, if they make a new PMD, do you think they'll try including all the new gimmicks that came after megas, or just ignore them?
>>
>>59465964
>>Do you think a PMD game should start you with a party of three instead of a party of two, or is the duo dynamic too ingrained into the series?
i'd personally like to see a trio but i see why they stick so strongly to the duo formula. it's simple and it works.
>>What was your favorite or least favorite part of PSMD?
i like the addition of the world map and the other continents. there should've been more settlements
>>What dungeon theme is your favorite in any of the PMD games?
forest of shadows bar none
>>What's the dungeon you've gone into most in the series? Did you do it for grinding, items, recruits?
that would probably be foggy forest because i like the recruits in there and i get a weird familiar vibe to it

>>59467620
yeah i'd imagine that you could probably just repurpose a galar particle into some sort of item that dynamaxes you in the dungeons.
as for if they use all the gimmicks? tera feels pretty ripe to be chosen for anything, but i'm not too sure about the other ones personally
>>
>>59465964
>2026
>still no PMD game where your partner turns out to be the bad guy
>>
>>59467620
>Dynamax
Aside from buffed HP and buffed Max Moves (I imagine they'd keep the move level of the base move) and what the other annon mentioned of breaking walls. Regular size mons would jump to 3x3 tiles (and 3x3 tile mons would maybe jump to 5x5?). Sadly they'd bne a bit anoying to play with, and I don't see enemies spawning with dynamax

>Z moves
Pretty irelevant by now, and a once per floor or stretch of floors nuke isn't that impresive when you have dozens of wands to neutralize any problematic enemy.

>Tera: Would worrk the simpels, just gain the tera type and a boost to moves of that type. Not that interesting to use, but perhaps strong foes could spawn with a set tera type, that'd be interesting enemy desing. If they also have terastal type, I imagine it'd be one boost per type per floor (ass cheeks, like in mainline)

>Megas Again
Probably the winner, they received the spotligh recently, and there's a bunch of new megas they can add. I don't see a new game featuring all mons, so I guess mons with mega evo would get a free pass, be it for better or for worse. Also a safe bet since all other gimmicks will only grow more and more irelevant as time goes on, and there's no telling if any future gimmick will play well with PMDs mechanics.

is there anything like renegade platinum for explorers of sky? new pokemon and minor difficulty increase
>>

I highly recommend Explorers of Alpha for the increased Difficulty and QoL features.

If you want a lot of new pokemon they have Explorers of Fortune, but it's made by some retarded tranny.

There is also Project Orion made by an anon on this board but that is mainly a QoL hack.

If you just want custom starters, it's easy enough to just import your own via Skytemple, but they'll have missing animations unless someone has made custom animations for them.

Honestly with how much PMD always tries to have emotional moments towards the end I wouldn't be surprised if a future game pulls a moment where you have to fight your partner.

I love Rescue Team and Explorers for how much broken and janky shit are in them, feels like they were barely play-tested. Explorers has items where moves of a type your Pokemon is weak to will instead HEAL you for as many HP as you would’ve taken damage. It’s fucking ridiculous and I love it
>>
>>59471165
I really like the exclusive items in explorers, but jesus christ is there a power gap between them
>+10 max hp
>turns [super effective] type damage into healing
>permanent light screen or reflect
>eating an apple heals 25 hp
>increased speed in [weather], including clear/no weather
All of these are tier 3 items effects, and some of them are so fucking insane then you have lol 10 max health
>>
>>59471244
At the very least every pokemon that's not a single stage mon gets the super efective damage from one type becomes healing effect.

Rare instance of equality in exclusive items.

Ledyba's line gets to benefit from its swap item boosting speed in Clear weather, and the Sky Gem boosting speed in Clear weather for Flying types. These stack, so you can have a Ledyba at triple speed permanently.

i would never want a pmd story where your partner turns out to be evil, but if there's a point in the story where he logically has qualms about going deeper into an important story dungeon or something but (you) know it's what you have to do, then he tries to fight you and cries when he hits you or something. that could be good.

What do I have to tweak so that the AI uses moves like Powder Snow or Blizzard without needing to be next to a Pokemon? This also applies to the enemies, because a bit more challenge won't hurt.
>>
>>59472685
In the move you want, go to Range. There, edit the edit the range value for the AI to Room.
Not that AI reffers to both ally AI and enemy AI. Also note that thiss isn't the actual range of the attack, if you set it to Room for ember, the ai will merely use it whenever a target is in the same room as them, but it will only go as far as one tile in front of them and miss.

You don't need to touch anything for the leader to use Powder Snow without an enemy in front. The player controled leader can be made to use any move whenever, regardless of if it'll fail or not.
>>
Are there any good pmd webcomics that get updated still or have they all fallen to the wayside....
>>
>>59472691
Oh is that whatit does? Weird, I thought it had to be the same thing as the above part regardless.

So what does the AI weight thing even do?
>>
>>59472791
Not the anon but I'm 99% sure that's referring to the weight system that determines the likelihood of a move being selected. Every move in the game that is used by AI is chosen at random, but it's not an even split between every move. So if you don't want the AI to spam one specific move, lower its weight.

Some of this is explained in more detail in these videos dissecting the series' AI. Might be useful for a hack dev, but also just an interesting watch.

The inevitable Explorers of Sky remake will surpass the original with all the new QoL improvements
>>
>>59472878
The inevitable Explorers of Sky remake will have ugly 3D models, force you to use moves in every fights by getting rid of the default attack (this buffs room clearing moves and water types since lots of them can learn blizzard), and the QoL it gives will be insignificantly small
Not like any of this matters because the next remake will be in a decade and we still won't get any new PMD games
>>
>>59472878
Almost every change DX made from the originals was a downgrade or cut content so I doubt this
>>

I had an idea for a Romhack that merges some concepts from Pokemon Conquest (warring states, expanding land...), EoS and GtI. It’s better not to recruit Jirachi and just use the wishes for free recruits right?
>>
>>59473374
That's of course if you're doing a recruit'em all, and only really worth it on the mons that are cock and ball torture (Chansey/ Keck...). Not to mention you have to fill up the friend areas such that your target is the only thing you can possibly obtain.

Do also note that Jirachi is the only legendary you can dismiss if you recruited them, and he'll go back to wish cave where you can make wishes again.

Newfag here. Is Pokemon Super Mystery Dungeon any good? I played that back when I was a wee worm and I can't remember if it was or not. I think I got to the postgame and went no further after that. Would it be worth going back to it for a new playthrough?

Also, is there any fanfics/writings that you would recommend?
>>
>>59473652
If you haven't played Explorers of Sky yet I suggest playing that before thinking about replaying Super. Same goes for Red/Blue rescue team and Gates, in that order. Super is a fine game but I think it's a lot easier to have fun with it as a kid than it is to play through it as an adult, though that opinion varies quite a bit in this thread so.
>>
>>59473659
Yeah I've played Sky and Red Rescue. I replayed Sky maybe 2 or 3 years ago? Had this funny ass moment where I mixed garbage into a sundae at Spinda's shop, and the drink was so incredible that some fuckass Smeargle walked up to me and was like "I can tell you're a real connoisseur" and wanted to join my squad. Great game.

If you replay SMD I highly recommend a Chespin lead. Personal bias aside, it feels like it's the only protag the devs tested the game with since he's so much better equipped to handle the HP walls that make up the entire game. Otherwise, you're going to be using Petrify Wands a whole lot.

Series veteran here. Started Rescue Team DX and I'm a bit disappointed. The amount of info I am presented with at the beginning is too much. Tutorials everywhere. Unnecessary glossary. Crap ton of controls to remember. After clearing two dungeons, I went to Pelipper post office and was greeted with a huge list of rescue requests including postgame dungeons. It completely ruins the immersion, I feel like I'm reading a guide with a wiki on a side, not playing a game.

And I got multiple stat boosting items (Zinc, DX gummis and the like) just from trying out features, not necessarily grinding. Also, I'm at level 14 with several ranged attacks before going to Mt. Steel. No idea how the game will balance this.

>>59465964
>Do you think a PMD game should start you with a party of three instead of a party of two, or is the duo dynamic too ingrained into the series?
I see no problems with starting with a bigger party. But I want a game to really START with 3. Not begin with 2 and add one important character later. I didn't feel motivated to bring Absol with me in Rescue Team for example.

>What was your favorite or least favorite part of PSMD?
I remember really liking side characters for having interesting dialogue (mixing jokes, references and just realistic behaviour).
Heavily disliked how little experience I gained for how tough opponents were. I felt railroaded while being constantly in danger. Not a good feeling.

>What dungeon theme is your favorite in any of the PMD games?
Great Canyon from Rescue Team. I'm interested in listening to the remix in DX.

>What's the dungeon you've gone into most in the series? Did you do it for grinding, items, recruits?
Probably Western Cave for stat boosting items. Explored Joyous Tower quite a lot for recruits as well.

If you've ever played Shiren the Wanderer, I imagine it works like behemoths for enemy mons. They're gigantic versions of regular monsters.

>rooms can spawn in with dynamax energy (big swirling clouds) that make enemies grow huge

They're immune to damage from front and sides, massive stats but incredibly slow.
If you run away they will eventually shrink back down.

>bring back the old IQ system instead of the cringe rare quality shit
>not a word-for-word remake of the original story, the Darkrai arc should be incorporated better instead of being tacked on at the end
>more legendary-specific quests instead of the mystery part/secret slab

Want to test a few new TMs and other Items I added. Any way to out them in the inventory on the debugger?
>>
>>59476023
Simplest way would be to add them as the sole items in the item pool of the first floor in something like Beach Cave, then increase the number of items the floor spawns by a lot.

A more elegant solution would be, in any script, adding the following lines inside of def 0{}:
item_Set(0, ITEM_ID, 0);
switch ( message_Menu(MENU_GIVE_ITEM) ) {}
then running the script. You can use something like the singpost script in crossroads or Treasure Town so that by just reading the sign yopu get the items.

If you want multiple of the same item you can place as many switch () whatever as items you want, no need to repeat the first line.
>>
>>59476038
The first one works for the TMs. Not so much with the Exclusive items, that SHOULD be in chests(...hopefully).
>>
>>59476054
Yeah, dungeons don't let you spawn items past a certain ID, including Exclusive items. I'd use the 2nd method for that.

Though if you can't figure it out, you could maybe abuse the fact that the swap shop only picks items from the pokemon you've attack in dungeon just like with mision clients (an I think also your starters?)
So you could load the 1st floor of a dungeon with the mons you want to test the exclusive item, up the rate at which they drop boxes with exclusive items for convenience and swap them the next day. Making sure you only attack those specific mons (If you select All complete from the debuger, there won't be any mons registered as having been attacked).

May need to spawn a few escape orbs.
>>
I'll see if I can use the second method. If I apply the changes on the debugger, the main script won't be affected, right?
>>
>>59476070
The debuger is not a diferent instance of the rom or its scripts. Any change you a scene you make in the debuger will also be there if you play the rom in aany other emulator.

Annoying beginning aside, I'm liking the remake. You would think that 20 years later the plot wouldn't affect me much but man... fugitive arc always gets me.

Completing this game should be a piece of cake compared to the original titles. I was so surprised when I recruited Breloom. You definitely couldn't get fully evolved mons in Red/Blue. And DX has really convenient menus to tell you everything you got... a little too many menus to be frank. Change from Friend Areas to Camps is horrible and I feel like being able to take care of storage while choosing a dungeon takes away some soul out of the game.

Little to say about remade OST. Two of the tracks felt worse, the rest is what you would expect. I swear a theme or two were added. Art style is fantastic when it comes to interface, item icons and backgrounds. It's adorable and so detailed.

>No idea how the game will balance this.
Turns out it doesn't. Got Steamroll and XP Boost rare qualities and I'm breezing through the game. Used like 2-3 tiny revive seeds on freshly recruited mons but that's about it. I've even decided to forgo using Makuhita Dojo or Wonder Mail stuff (except for Flamethrower TM).

Going to use the dummy slots to implement a couple of new and more challenging postgame dungeons. To you guys, what makes a dungeon challenging? Typically the level reset ones would come to mind, but beyond those, what else?

Ultimately, I could just up the enemy spawn rate.
>>
>>59480844
A pretty big factor is how much range the enemies have. Water dungeons are anoying cos of enemies like octilery bulling you with range. World Abyss is a bitch cos of Nidoqueen with Earth Power.

Maybe add some mons with range move instead of room wide moves. The line between dificult and cancerous is pretty thin when it comes to room wide moves.
>>
>>59480993
I was actually thinking about that as well. That's why I tweaked some moves to have longer range compared to what they used to have.

I think the somewhat annoying part there is needing to adjust the level up movepool for them to have the appropriate moves. So another layer of planning ahead.

Nigga, you’re playing a video game, you are literally already wasting time, might as well have it be immersive and fun instead of lame and shitty
>>
>>59480844
Give every enemy agility and earth power and make every floor the crossroads design.

But seriously, enemy design and their movesets are the biggest thing when it comes to making PMD dungeons. You'll want a mix of weaker enemies and stronger ones that make the player go OH FUCK when they see them, you don't want every enemy to a challenge the player will have to waste valuable resources on to survive, you'll want them to have to weigh up when they should use their resources.

Upping the enemy spawn rate makes stuff harder, but personally I prefer when dungeons have fewer but more intimidating enemies.

I've still been updating the new clover lore page, but there's still a bunch of stuff I need to add (Like rifts, how game lore is referenced in stories, etc)

https://rentry.org/cloverlorenew

I added some info about how the other continents have been mentioned in other stories but I'm unsure what extra details about them would be good to add. I was also planning on adding a list of reoccurring characters/groups in stories (Like the ariados tailor, or the blaziken tribe) If you guys have any other suggestions for stuff I should add here or if I've made any mistakes let me know.

How do you handle characters with timelines? I know there is no overall consensus, but some stories are written over the course of days, weeks, or months. If two stories cross over and they have timelines, how is this handled?
>>
>>59486071
You can just say fuck it. Of course triying to keep a semblence of continuity and cronology is nice, but don't be detered to write in a charater interaction just because it won't exactly line up if you cross reference it with that character's stories.

Most stories don't really develop the guess characters, aside from their relation with the protags improving or worsening. They're in a sort of limbo.

And we don't know if future plans for the story will end up contradicting stuff.
Growlithe's stories only spand a few months, and it's curtently up to the Summer Festival. For all we know Bill and Gill could find a way out of the Pokémon world a few months after that, and any apperience they've had in more than a year class with their cointinuity.
>>
>>59485652
On the reviver seeds section, there is Vaporeanon's story that tried to set the lore so that reviver seeds don't work in certain dungeons anymore.

Crunch anon wrote about a dungeon that makes pokémon act feral, too. Though he never continued this story, it might still be cool to pick up for another writer.

A section on the water continent might be good. I don't see one here. I know KFC touched on it a little bit

Nta but why do you think it's bad? I always thought it was pretty good
>>
>>59488358
Not him but I'm in the same boat.
Most enemies are way too strong for where you're at in tbr story. Only like, four of the twenty starters are actually equipped to handle combat.

At the same time, wands are OP. Stayaway and petrify wands end every encounter instantly and they're not rare. They're seeds that can stack, which also makes ordinary seeds useless.

The break system makes team building hell. You're very limited in creativity because only the starter and partner escape its clutches, meaning they're the only reliable pokémon you have in your arsenal.

There's only one recruit per species because of the wonder orb. As a result, evolution is made pointless. Smeargle suffers a heavy nerf because you can't train multiple smeargles for different play styles. You have one smeargle and you have to change every move again if you want a different loadout instead of just recruiting a new one.

So the gameplay is a mess. Only beaten out by Gates for worst in the series and even that is debatable. Story deserves another post, maybe two to really get into but it's also bad.

>Stayaway and petrify wands end every encounter instantly and they're not rare.
They’re still rare enough that you can’t use them all the time, so it ended up feeling balanced to me. And you can just limit your use of them if they feel too strong.
>The break system makes team building hell. You're very limited in creativity
I was also annoyed by the breaks, but I’d say they encourage creativity by stopping out from reusing the same Pokemon and pushing you to try ones you never would’ve chosen before. I remember using a wider variety of Pokemon in Super than the other games, and it was fun to use a bunch of different Pokemon.
>Smeargle suffers a heavy nerf
Swapping your moveset is pretty quick to do. I don’t think it’s a huge problem. How often do people need to change movesets on Smeargle anyway?
>>
Just got Blue Rescue Team, Explorers of Sky, Gates to Infinity, and Super Mystery Dungeon for $15 a pop at a yard sale. I'm not gonna sell them because I was missing them from my physical collection, but in what order should I play them? I should note I have no attention span, and the first and last time I tried to play Shiren the Wanderer I gave up after an hour or two because I hated the gameplay.
>>
>>59488706
Also, if I play these, how long will it take for me to become a furry? Is there a genuine risk it is it all memes?
>>
>>59488706
Blue Rescue Team -> Explorers of Sky -> Gates to Infinity -> Super Mystery Dungeon, but if you hated the gameplay then I've got some bad news for you

>>59488711
You have to have played them when you were 7-13 years old and it's additive with other influences, though posting on /vp/ at all is a bad sign
>>
>>59488550
The thing is that none of these are an issue in older games.

And it really doesn't matter if the break system personally forced you to change pokémon. There are other ways to encourage variety. There's a lot to consider with types, abilities, move pools, and IQ groups, as well as availability and size. The pokémon I never would have chosen before, I wouldn't have chosen for a reason.

>Smeargle
He's really popular for 99F dungeons because of his versatility. I have three in Rescue Team.

I'm glad these didn't bother you. Enjoy the game. It's worse than the rest of the series though
>>
>>59488719
>I've got some bad news
Damn, the gameplay is exactly the same, isn't it?
>You have to have played them when you were 7-13 years old
So I'm safe then, great. 11 is around the time I first played Shiren the Wanderer. I recall Explorers of T/D/S being a thing around that time too, but I was more into the mainline games.
>though posting on /vp/ at all is a bad sign
I'll take that as fairly safe then, I hear lots of good things about the stories in these games, but I don't think they'll make me want to start identifying as a Pokemon. I'll give Blue Rescue Team a shot.
>>
>>59488747
Warning you ahead of time. Story is highly overrated. It is only good in comparison to mainline Pokemon. By all other accounts, it is a short children's game with pretty basic characters and predictable twists
>>
>>59488550
>I was also annoyed by the breaks, but I’d say they encourage creativity by stopping out from reusing the same Pokemon and pushing you to try ones you never would’ve chosen before
I don't know about you, but "only the protag/partner can be readily used at any time" is the polar opposite of that, because it encourages buffing the only two pokemon that are reliable. Why use anything else when they can just decide to go AWOL for an untold amount of days? I can't even imagine what they were thinking.
Besides, if I want to use the same pokemon all the time, that's my choice.
>>
>>59488761
Not to immediately sound like a huge fag, but might it be worth it to instead watch a playthrough of the game on YouTube for some of them, and then play the good ones? My time isn't super limited, but it isn't as free as it used to be.

I was about to start Blue, but from the little bit of stuff I've looked at, it seems like all of the NPC names are just regular Pokemon names. What am I supposed to name myself? My partner? I don't feel comfortable using my human name, and I don't know what kind of names to give.
>>
>>59492497
Obviously you use a human name for the protag. If you woke up in his situation you wouldn't go "oh yeah i remember, my name is Mudkip."
>>
>>59492501
>"oh yeah i remember, my name is Mudkip."
I do that because I don't like seeing everyone calling themselves their species name and then you have the mc/partner going by the name John and Dave. It just looks silly
>>
>>59492501
>>59492504
>If you woke up in his situation you wouldn't go "oh yeah i remember, my name is Mudkip."
Respectfully, if I woke up in a strange area, found myself to be a Pokemon no bigger than 1ft tall, and, for arguments sake, woke up to a Charmander speaking "English" to me, and introducing himself as "Charmander", I would not tell him my name is "Anon". But I don't know what I would tell him. I don't know if it would feel right to name myself "Squirtle" if I found myself to be one.
>>
>>59492579
the only reason the NPCs name themselves by species is due to the pokemon prioritizing the pokemon characters first as their trademarks for sake of the branding. the implication is that they're all supposed to have names, but it's pokemon, so those names get shorthanded to their species for sale of easy remembering. it's why the pokemon say their names too in the anime and such, it's not intended as a hard and fast intrinsic lore decision

>>59493635
He made it up. Pretty sure the games suggest the exact opposite, with that one Teddiursa who's friends with an Ursaring, and after he evolves, they're worried because they're both named Ursaring now and people will get them mixed up.
>>
>>59493635
if they didn't and it was a 'lore' thing, they wouldn't let (You) name them anything. You'd just be the pokemon of whatever it is you turn into and you wouldn't get the option. Nobody throws shade at you for having a name, even in gates where everyone hates each other for breathing, the topic of you having a name or not is never brought up (since it can be either or). that they don't isn't brought up either because it's not an observation a kid's expected to make.

it's pokemon, they never have to be concerned about framing duplicates of a species in such a manner that it can't be handwaved away with minimal fuss. you chase one krookodile in super and the game never concerns itself with which one because only one ever matters for sake of the game's framing. they usually make each character a distinct species anyway, so they never have to have a name, because for what the game's concerned, those are the only ones the player interacts with. but you can't seriously be trying to imply the entire pokemon world wouldn't have a system of distinguishing one member of the same species from another without it having to be some esoteric contrived nonsense that's never brought up.
>>59493706
that's a joke, anon, because originally the teddiursa that evolves is a girl and their only difference is gender besides. team tasty-tier meat question bs if you try to take that literally as to mean they have no other way of distinguishing each other. especially when you factor in the externals
>>
>>59493720
another thing is that you're asked for your name in each of the openings of the games. In some of the cases, the partner (an implied native) is the one to tell you your species, so it's not that they don't know what you are. you can explain it away as a formality that they ask, but they also casually introduce themselves with their names (gates is the only one where they initially just start with their species, but it's one dungeon where they keep it if you choose to name them anything) beforehand if they have one, so it's never a matter of them not having one. many of the other characters are introduced indirectly, and therefore their species is the only thing that matters since it's a game about pokemon and the characters are pokemon first.

nobody brings up any 'rules' about it because the rules don't exist, they're an external factor in this game being branded with the major franchise's characters to begin with.
>>
>>59492501
Yes you would, especially in the other games where you know you’re being hunted or you’re completely amnesiac.
Accepting a species name makes perfect sense as it helps you lay low until you remember things or figure out wtf is happening.
>>
>>59493527

the logistics of making it long enough are the limiting factor
>>
>>59496560
things would get too complicated if people learned you became a real pokemon. you’d have to completely change your life and stay hidden from everyone. you’d have to quit your job if you work in a public place, you couldn’t go shopping, you couldn’t socialize with anyone. you’d need to rely on your family to support you or possibly some very trustworthy friends. and it may end up like kafka where your caretakers get sick of it and start hating you.

Mine is, doesn't make it any less annoying knowing I have to waste space on my sd card because nintendo couldn't make game carts properly.
Also, isn't starter swapping way more cumbersome for SMD? Something about editing ram values or some shit. I dunno, the last time i played i just took a save someone made for me in this thread to play customs, but that was like 10 years ago.
>>
>>59500948
Starter swapping is more cumbersome, because no one has invented an editor for it. It's apparently possible though, I think?
>>
>>59500948
There is an editor for it (https://projectpokemon.org/home/tutorials/rom/editing-roms-with-sky-editor/3ds-mystery-dungeon-mods/starter-mod-r48/)

I remember it being quite cumbersome to use (I remember not bein able to change the proyect changes), but that could just be me being dumb.

Instead of editing ram, it creates a new .cia file from the one you insert.
Also makes some changes, like defaulting to the idle animation instead of the attack animation when the game calls a starter only one.
