I'm straight up using chatgpt codex to code my romhack. I did all the creative work myself, but hit a wall when it came to coding. Codex is doing it all. It's not free, I have to give it pretty detailed instructions on what I want, do a lot of playtesting to make sure nothing's broken, and occasionally go in to fix a line of code. But it's been very smooth for the most part.
I won't mention it when I eventually make my hack public because people will crucify you for using AI. I think there's some truth that using it in the creative process is kind of soulless, but for technical work it's a godsend for people who don't have a lot of coding skill. Most people don't see it with that kind of nuance though.

I think AI art is slop and the expansion of data centers should be heavily limited. But I'm also not going to discount AI's legitimate uses as a tool. I think essentials could work but keep in mind that individual event pages only support checking to see if 1 or 2 switches are on, and if a single variable is at or above a specified number
without setting up switch/variable checks in the event pages/using self switches for extra condition checking
so for more complex events in terms of switch/variable flags checked you'll have to get a little creative

I think any engine would be able to handle such a thing. Branching menu paths is extremely easy to do. But you'd probably need some kind of memory value to keep track of what option you chose, for each NPC that has branching dialogue.

Why not? Discord isn't just all kids, it really depends on the server. I'm in some gaming servers where the average age is probably like 35-40. I don't know the demographics of the romhack discords specifically, but I'm sure there are plenty of 30+ year olds. As another anon said, younger people might have more free time to work on romhacking, but there's a lot of older folk who have been at it for many years too. Plus it doesn't really matter, outside of dedicated social channels those servers are focused on technical discussion or sharing assets and stuff, age doesn't come up.

Which romhacking discords? Ones for the games themselves, or the ones focused on game development? Cause I feel like those are slightly different crowds. Idk, I'm in some of the dev discords and never had any issues as an older guy myself. I find it saps the joy out of the game because I arbitrarily decide when to stop using them (why not get to 100? when do I stop?), and can just create a brand new team that can win flawlessly at any time. I played the dicks out of it when it released, first a marathon to reach the credits, then sporadically picking it up to check out the postgame and hunt for hidden mons.
I think I did literally everything there is to do between main game, side content and postgame by the end of it, including completing the dex, getting all the secret mons and seeing a definitive end screen, overall it was a breddy gud time once I got used to the "almost all ghosts" gimmick that rendered Bug and Poison kind of worthless in most cases.
It's easy to look at this and call it Plaguemon's wannabe cousin thanks to the gen 1 aesthetic, but if you asked me I genuinely consider this a spiritual successor to Snakewood thanks to how absurd and eclectic the hack gets, just with substantially less incomprehensible in-joke retardation, and I mean that entirely as a compliment rather than a diss.
Somehow I never realized until postgame that one of the hidden key items, the Grey Soulstone, was actually just a reskinned Rainbow Pass, and that I could've had quite a number of bonus mons for my campaign + Hall of Fame team, so that might be worth keeping in mind if you happen upon the ways to get to the bonus areas.
Genuinely might find myself replaying this one in the future since the rough average of 150-152 fully evolved mons (plus whatever's viable with Eviolite) gives you a solid variety to work with, asinine as it sounds for the hack's premise.

What is a good babby's first hack? I tried Radical Red on easy but it's too difficult for me (I just learned what a sweeper is yesterday). The DexNav spoiled me, though. I don't care about capturing everything and filling the PokeDex, but filling out the DexNav was very cool (Elite Redux starts with it filled so there is no mystery)

I do want something more difficult than the base games. I was replaying FireRed but then got sleepy because I was breezing through it. I like how challenge hacks make the early game way more interesting, but I know I won't be able to finish them. I tried out Run and Bun out of curiosity and the early game is bad ass. One of the very first random trainers in the start has an owl that casts sand attack and confuses you so you can't hit shit while he kills you. I guess I will just keep trying stuff. Alright, the next Project Postgame update is going smoothly.

So far I've:
Expanded the encounter pool for the Battle Tower and Factory.
Redone the pokemon hall (again) to make it even easier to get your team battle ready.
Fixed some reported bugs.
Added in MOST of the ZA megas that have abilities (there are 2 left and it might have to code them myself)
Added even more trainers to the hotel (soon to be added to the PWT and Battle Tower)
Made all the pokemon that aren't fully evolved available.
Gave the Battle Factory arena a coat of paint (you have no idea how much hair I was pulling to get it running).

All that's left is adding more trainers that I've obtained sprites for, and adding the Evergreen fakemon (I'll be reaching out and finalizing that this weekend). I'm aiming for September 11th (total coincidence I just wanted a Friday), but if I can't get everything done by then, I'll just make sure the game is in a playable state. It's been too long since the last update and I've made some major improvements since the last build. Maybe in December I'll finally start to recruit people to help. I mostly need spriters, but there are some special things I want to do that I NEED a skilled coder to accomplish. If people make something for me, I'll encourage them to make it a public resource (pic related), but ultimately it will be up to them.

Its a good lesson on a lot of what not to have in a ROM hack while at the same time its a game that is so bad that its good.

It is an actual fun experience.

Worst dropped: Dark Rising. Dropped after 1st gym. Should have stopped in the cave where the encounter rate is so high that there's an encounter EVERY step. Hell, turning to face a different direction spawns a pokemon. I didn't know this was even possible.

Worst beaten: Girls Hunter. Ignoring the cringe of the porn, the gameplay is awful and trying to build a team is like pulling teeth.

Most unpleasant: Dream Stone. I hesitate to call it the worst since there are a lot of QoL changes, but at the end of the day, everything about playing it is just unpleasant. It's only there for youtubers and streamers to prove that they are "good at pokemon" or whatever. If you aren't filming yourself for clout, you better off as a human being by not playing it. I would honestly rather go back to Dark Rising.
