A thread for the creation and discussion of fan fiction and other fanworks - anything that involves a story and/or reading. What've you been reading? What've you been writing? What would you like to see more of?

Team Yell or Star because they are literal fucking whos that can't implicate or ruin their life or are actually evil. Although a woman in her mid twenties joining either group would be strange enough.
Otherwise Team Rocket, because Giovanni doesn't want to overtly destroy the world or commit genocide, and also isn't sitting in a cave like Bin Laden for fun

Finally started reading BoC, just finished Chapter 9. I would say it seems pretty standard from what I've read before but BoC has set that standard so that's that.
I don't really like SI ot SI tropes like meta knowledge but it's been an enjoyable read so far and the extension of pokemon abilities and moves isn't something I've thought too much of before.
As a aside note, I purused the archive and it seems like BoC was talked about a lot more here a year-to-three ago back when it updated more regularly. Just interesting, oh yeah and I'm not really used to third person present prose but the prose aren't bad.
I've enjoyed it decently so far.
>>
>>59566616
BoC came out at a time where fics weren't as popular and it was a solid, well written, and most importantly quickly updated story with long chapters. There was also a hint of chud so you knew you weren't reading 'tranny delusion politics #5432'.

Then he started a patreon, slowed his pace, and spun the wheels at the 4th gym for like 20 chapters which were released at a snails pace.

As far as 'talk about it'. There's nothing to talk about. The story releases 1 chapter maybe every two months and it goes no where and they aren't interesting.
The guy started a patreon and milked 4k a month for years for doing basically nothing while he writes his feral sex fic or whatever he's working on.
>>
>>59566623
You forgot that he ends each chapter on a clifffhanger halfway through a battle/action sequence with regularity now.
>>
>>59566623
Oh yeah, I've heard that before, my reading is kind of tainted by other people's hindsight comments. Like Brendan being an idiot who joins Team Magma, or Lee and Ninetails getting too strong too quickly, and as you've said, chapters were nothing happens.
I was recommended to drop it at lavaridge, chapter 45, but I'm tempted to but I wanna try reading the first two acts completly.
Really this read through is a long time coming, although I'm glad I didn't read it before I started writing Mahogany. That way I'm more original, even if by circumstance.
>>
>>59566616
>>59566623
Here's a pic comparing chapter releases.
2 years worth of releases (7/4/2024->7/31/2026) vs 1 year worth of releases (10/22/2020->10/28/2021).
Also, earlier chapters progressed the story more, later chapters stopped progressing the story, it was clear it was being loaded with filler right when patreon started.

Thinking of writing a chapter about a Pokémon that was abandoned in the sewers for years like in that anime episode. But instead of a Bulbasaur it would be a Totodile that was flushed down the toilet as an egg (yes, really) and grew up to become an man-eating Feraligatr
>>
>>59566714
So that's what happened to the Totodile from Spice and Fox. More seriously it sounds interesting, although a bit generic, the anime did the trope a bunch from what I remember and it's something fics do a lot too.

Feraligator is too cool of a pokemon for Andy or Drew from SELLOUTS. Is this a new Unova fic you're talking about, assuming your the guy who posted the totodile pic.
>>
>>59566428
Well they only lay fertilized eggs because egg making is extremely fast (hours) and thus very taxing on the body (makes the mon need to go to sleep shortly after sex) so if the egg cell stays unfertilized for a bit it gets reabsorbed before the process can start. This way it's the closest to the games.
Btw i'm considering just starting quality control on the two chapters i already have and keeping the sexy one for the next upload together with the aftermath one which btw half explains the above spoiler to Leo's confusion

I have a another question, does Ash show up again in Boc. Already with what little screen time he's had, he seems kind of extraneous I don't know why he's there.
>>
>>59567028
He gets mentioned and interacts later on. He's there because omg ash is real.
>>
>>59567038
Weird choice by the author then, even the other weird choices have sort of made sense to me. Even if things like Lee being the first to talk to pokemon like their animals and the first to have Vulpix use it's pyromacy is silly it's SI-genre silly. Well I'm only ten chapters in so I'll chalk up some of it to Lee being a psychic, at least Birch seems to think there's something else wrong about him. Actual superpowers are more palatable to me than SI knowledge, lol.
And I haven't even gotten to the nutrition part yet!
>>
>>59567028
From what I remember Ash shows up in alternate pov chapters. Mostly to show that his team and journey are going a little differently. It looked like it was leading up to something where Ash puts on the big boy pants to face off against gym leader personal teams instead of just going through the motions, but then the Patreon Nation attacked and now that plot thread is years off from mattering if it ever does.

>CCbro’s epic crashout about Ian revealing blessed Sawsbuck to Neroli
>Asking for a clifffhanger disclaimer before certain chapters
>Absolutely roasting the fuck out of me because the characters are retards for only using one Pokemon at a time in a battle they’re outnumbered
>Calling the endgame twist villain within 15 minutes of posting their henchmen’s first debut chapter
>Calling a future MC team addition possibly 100 chapters before it happens
>Claims a patreon is no longer a want, but a need
>Claims the fic is one of the greatest works of serialized fiction they’ve ever experienced not even my narcissistic ass believes that but glazing a random fanfic that way is wild
>One commenter compares the fic to two others in how it treats the characters, and is responded to with a 12 paragraph comparative analysis of what the first commenter talked about across the three fics
>>
>>59568233
nta, it might be, but more of the repressed homosexual type rather than the "I want to be a lesbian type". I say that because the author said the now-female MC would probably be straight, i.e be interested in men a thread-or-three ago.
Which is pretty gay from a meta perspective.
>>
>>59568233
I think it would be more entertaining if MC didn't try at all to act different, so people would be horrified seeing Erika turn into a butch
>>
>>59568233
No matter how I wrote it, it was going to end up sounding like that. Which I don't want it to.
>>59568475
>I say that because the author said the now-female MC would probably be straight, i.e be interested in men a thread-or-three ago.
I'm not even sure at this stage if romance belongs in this fic. Earlier on I had a sort of plan for it. I know at one point I will run out of things to say with the Gym Leader setting and try to kick the ball down to somewhere else which is where I could do it. But even from the outset I decided that if there was going to be any there wouldn't be any lesbian stuff.
>>59568479
The attitude of the MC is just making the best of a bad situation and that changing too much would doom them.
>>
>>59567865
I hope you check out Spice and Fox soon, the author went on a hiatus once the third arc started so there's plenty of time to catch up.
>>
I miss the view graphs on FFNet. It was basically the thing fueling me to write shit
>>
Reading BoC's 11th chapter, the one with Lee fighting Roxanne's personal team. I din't find it unrealistic they beat her or anything, the fic starts off with the knowledge Lee already beat Roxanne in game. I just find the:
>*Hah, so you beat x pokemon, that means I need to use my real team*
Trope kind of weird, ignoring the argument on whether gym leaders should have personal teams or not, isn't the point of beating a gym earning the badge? Then having that badge is a way of gauging your strength as a trainer, but if gym leaders can pull out their personal team against anyone they want it kind of ruins that metric. While I imagine the Leagues would want a degree of standardization.

Although it does do a good enough job of making your MC seem cool I guess, especially since Roxanne's true team wasn't too strong so it still seems realistic for Lee to beat.

Not Pokefic but a long, LONG time ago when I was writing DCfics somebody gushing over a flirty, streetwise waiter that got involved in a plot threw a full court shot accusing him of being the Martian Manhunter despite this being a Batman fic that had never so much as hinted other DC properties were involved. And she was correct.
>>
>>59568830
>isn't the point of beating a gym earning the badge? Then having that badge is a way of gauging your strength as a trainer
They presumably have to test a lot of things, such as signs of growth. It's probably not okay to borrow your parents' overleveled starter to sweep every gym and they have to have an answer to that. They probably adapt to the opponent somewhat. Everyone dunks on the goofy cartoon for the pity badges but they clearly wanted to drive home that the letter of the rule isn't what counts.

If personalization didn't matter and all they wanted is standardization, they wouldn't have eccentric professionals do gym battles. They'd have some pencil pusher dump a box of occupied Pokeballs with the right type and level into a pitching machine and mark each KO off a checklist
>>
>>59568950
True enough, but I imagine pokemon aren't blindly loyal and someone taking their parents pokemon out for a joyride, assuming their parents were professional trainers, sounds like an easy way to get caught.

I guess more on the subject of BoC, it's battle against Roxanne shares a lot of vague points with the Roxanne battle in Hyphen, but I liked Hyphen's battle better. People weren't jerking Astra off as already being a veteran trainer and in there Roxanne got to pull off some of the same customizing move stuff that Astra and Lee get up too without having to be a pokemon, psychic, or an Isekaijin, just due to virtue of having time and money to train.
>>
>>59568955
I don't generally defend BoC, I just think a Gym Leader arbitrarily escalating to see what a challenger is made of isn't an abuse of power so much as their whole job description.

Even in the games Clair can arbitrarily withhold her badge as an autistic way of inviting you to her magical dragon cave and nobody blinks. Her gym, her rules. If the Gym Leader thinks the best test of your mettle is digging through a condemned mansion for the key to the Gym, that's where you're going, bucko

Can the gym leader decide the uniform of their gym trainers?
>>
Gym pokemon facing multiple challenges a day, day in, day out.
- How long do they take on teams looking for their 1st badge before they become too strong for that level ? A season ? Multiple seasons ?
- Will they grow to the strength of an 8-badger just by being a gym pokemon or is there some other ceiling ?
- Does the gym eventually end up with an army of pokemon ?
>>
>>59569020
Considering Erika and Whitney employ only lesbians I don't see why not.
>>
>>59569036
There's no reason to assume a pokemon and the gym leader won't try sandbagging since badges are a test. That isn't to say that Blaine's Conference Arcanine is going to be used for a seven badge fight but maybe a four badge Magmar can be used for a two or three badge fight when ordered to dodge less hits and use ember instead of fire blast.
There's also no infinite growth so eventually every pokemon will plateau at some point and then they'll just stick at whatever level they are at. It's not a guarantee that every pokemon can reach eight badge level just through training and battling.
Gym leaders might just sell or trade off any of their pokemon that might be deemed unsuitable for battle to different industries where battling strength isn't necessary.
Example: maybe Roark and Brock send their old pokemon to the nearby mining industry to live out the rest of their days.
>>
>>59568985
I don't think it's an abuse of power, as you say, most anything goes. It just seems sort of weird, like I imagine most would say something like:
>Well, you're pretty strong. I guess you earned this badge.
especially since both times I saw the trope it was broken out for Roxanne, the first gym leader who's the least impresive.
>>
>>59569084
There's no reason to assume a gym leader isn't a bum who's just have that job for the money

I guess I didn't think about that, admittedly the whole gym thing is kind of a second thought to me. Reading BoC, THE jounrey fic itself has given me some ideas for Mahogany.
I still don't care for the SI stuff like "I STOLE Treeko," that type of angst just pisses me off. Especially when everyone else is noting how suspiciously strong Lee is. So I think it says something that I did like when Lee freaked out about earth getting destroyed and Treeko snapped him out of his funk.
Really I think getting in so late has, to a degree, soured the experience for me, especially since I've seen some people say it's the best thing since tummy rubs. While others have spoiled me on stuff like the Ash plot never going anywhere, so his inclusion just seems bizarre to me. Zinnia is a more understandable choice, even if she only serves as a fake-out love interest for Ninetails.
Seeing Takoyaki in BoC has made me want to include Octilalry takoyaki.

Also, Chapter 13:
>Begon THOT
Dated humor like this always makes me cringe.

Also I started to realize how I'm writting Clair in Mahogany and Zinnia in BoC are coincidentally similar in some aspects. never played ORAS so I don't know much about Zinnia other than she's a feral person. I guess that's my chapter 11-to-15 reading for today.
>>
>>59569408

>>
>>59569418
>I don't know much about Zinnia
Very similar to Clair actually. Heir to a Dragon Tamer clan with a big ego. She's a lot more wild and youthful than Clair who comes across as older and bitchy in the games.

iirc her motivation is to stop the meteor with Primal Rayquaza instead of dumping it on another universe to deal with like Devon wants to do. She was pretty much vindicated as correct except the part where she was not the one worthy of Rayquaza.
>>
>>59569408
It would be interesting to see a fic where devolution was introduced as a 'new invention'. Haxorus would benefit from being able to revert to an axew since they can get sharper fangs.
also, sorta what >>59569416 joked about. If there was a little league, cheating using devolved pokemon would be a hilarious concept. A trans analogy where the trainer sucks at the elite circuit, so they devolve their pokemon to dominate the little league

>Very similar to Clair actually. Heir to a Dragon Tamer clan with a big ego. She's a lot more wild and youthful than Clair who comes across as older and bitchy in the games.
I guess that's how me writing a younger Clair ended up similar to Zinnia coincidentally. Well I'll try to differentiate them more.
So far aside from the main duo and their pokemon there hasn't much been seen of other characters, I'll rectify that in arc 2. Gives Clair a chance to be more bitchy and cocksure.
Either way reading and writing is always a learning experience.

Currently writing stuff happening in the Unown dimension as part of the final planned arc of this fic.

I've settled on a concept where petrified Unown can be strung together into math formulas to simulate physics in a given space.
String enough of them together and you get a landmass, sort of like a coral reef. Someone wrapped the strings into shapes to make structures.

That's where the final hurdle will be.

I didn't get as much writing done this weekend as I would've liked since I'm sick.
Next weekend I should reorganize my notes so my story beats are in the correct order to make this easier.

Borne of Caution 16-to-20
You know, it's a bit of a shame that Zinnia isn't the main love interest, she's cute and pretty forward. I imagine Clair more bashful and tsundere in comparison. Also, I've actually been witnessing that type of relationship before, a guy obsessed with his hobby so much he won't even look at the girl who's trying to get into his pants. Usually the girl loses interest since the guy in question is just immature, not dedicated. That said some of their banter is weak, feeling a bit generic.
I don't care much for the Log Chapters, aside from recapping the story they seem to just be a really intelligent way of delivering exposition as we see Bitch react to Lee. I do like how they put more focus on Lee and Vulpix being supernatural, uniquely psychically skilled rather than just Isekaijin knowledge. Slightly bittered by the fact I've been spoiled on where it'll end up. I.e:
>Gestaling is dangerous
>But oh don't worry since Lee and Vulpix have the same soul and Vulpix is Giratina!Borne the risks don't actually exist for them.

*eye roll*I actually had a kind-of-similar idea for my fic: Mahogany, but well there the idea was partly inspired by the Metamorphosis-like SELLOUTS TF thingy so it's a bad thing. At the very least I feel vindicated
Reading the stuff about custom moves had helped me with some of my own ideas regarding the next arc since Giovanni will show up there.
I was also a bit surprised that Lee, even jokingly initiated romantic contact with Vulpix by suggesting to her that she'd be jealous of Zinnia. Wouldn't a zoo keeper be more aware of the vulpix actually falling for him, especially since she's a pokemon, which the fic notes as being smarter and more aware than animals. I guess I would be more forgiving if it happened like in the Treeko scene where he leans on her in a moment of emotional weakness.
>>
>>59571595
Also him putting down Braxien and not Delphox is lol. There's some other funny stuff like Zinnia going:
>We should go easy on these girls
And Lee pulls out Vulpix, who the announcer compares to a Charizard, while she uses her useless Goomy. As if he has any right to complain about Brawly giving away his identity when he did the equivalent of barring out the brass knuckle boxing gloves against some highschoolers.I think that's another spot where Zinnia and Clair diverge, Clair's a bad sport in general when she's offended. And that includes when she wins too easily and when others surrender.

Oh yeah and I finally, after a little hinting earlier in the fic, got to the Nutrition part. I don't mind the concept but the Isekai twist on it still ignores me, same thing about the metaknowledge. Still the fic as a whole, despite not really being my taste, is above average, writing wise. At least mechanically.
Oh yeah I like Andre as well, he's a bitch but I admire his dedication to fighting an uphill battle. Especially since he, Lee, and Zinnia are essentially just bullying weaker trainers here for cash. Having him be more noble or be even scummier might've been a bit much. Even if he could go about it smarter. I have a feeling he'll end up as the other 'rival' ash, being left in the dust as the story starts to meander when it gets to Lavaridge town. Just my instinct.
I think I want to write an Andre-type character into my story now...

Was it ever elaborated in XY and ZA how Infinity-Energy-induced immortality / longevity works?
>>
>>59574321
Infinity Energy is life energy.
Do the math my dude.
>>
>>59574343
Yeah. But there a so many questions unanswered.

To give some impulses:
>Is it by definition immortality or longevity? Az dies in ZA, so it's perhaps the latter, yet Eternal Floette is still alive, so maybe not?
>Can the effects be quantified? E.g. each sacrificed life grants you the same amount of additional lifetime, or the equivalent of X Infinity Energy translates to Y amount of lifetime? Or is there a point where it doesn't matter, meaning you've reached true immortality? Is there a limit (Az set the record of ~ 3000 years)?
>Are humans and pokemon differently affected?
>How does this affect the biology of those affected? Do they gain superpowers or enhanced regeneration? >Do those affected mutate (Az is described to have grown taller, yet this cannot be observed in Lysandre or Eternal Floette. Lysandre however has this weird mark in one of his eyes, which Az on the other hand doesn have)? Are those mutations rather beneficial or harmful?
>Do the effects become weaker over time? Do those affected accumulate similar ailments an ordinary old human will have, meaning their regenerative / immortal powers eventually cannot outheal the harmful effects?
>Does the aging stop at the age the affected was in when being granted longevity / immortality?
>Does the hair of the affected bleach out (Az had black, Lysandre orange hair; after becoming immortal, their hair became white / gray)?
>Can they be killed or does immortality equates to invincibility? Is their immunity system stronger and more resilient to pathogens and ailments than that of someone / something unaffected? Do injuries like broken bones heal naturally and completely without treatment?
>Is there a limit on how much damage their bodies can sustain until these become fatal? Are the souls of the affected "locked" to their bodies, meaning they are still alive even though their bodies are "dead", until their bodies regenerate?
>>
>Do those effects only manifest when being exposed to the Ultimate Weapon, or does anything related to Infinity Energy cause these effects (e.g. Devon products)?
>>
>>59574321

Borne of Caution (BoC) 21-to-25
Battles are still nice, but I don't really buy Zinnia's speech about Lee being too cowardly in battlessince every battle highlights how brutal they are. Pokemon can really dish it out, but they can't really take it. That said, I did like Lee talking about his PTSD. The scene of Lee getting Shinx is also really nice.
I kind of like the battling style thing, especially since I've only had 1 battle in my fic, everything else has been a fight. Although it's not as detailed as it could have been and it mostly seems like another vector for characterization, which isn't a bad thing.
Although Lee can be a bit annoyingly self-pitying at times, I know it's intentional but I don't like it. It's a gutless flaw, I can't respect it. Especially since the first time it comes up it's in a no stakes scenario and it didn't hold him back in his past fights, just stopped him from winning more or made fights fair instead of stomps.
Zinnia is still really nice, it's a shame Ninetails becomes the main love interest.

Although reading Borne of Caution has made me think about moves being invented more. And that is, while Borne of Caution has new moves being invented by this rare thing, I think just from the games it could be assumed new moves are being invented all the time. Aside from them discovering new Types, every generation includes new moves, gen 1 even notes Giovanni invented Earthquake.
For instance, Throat Chop was introduced in Gen 7 and could reasonably have been assumed to be invented then. I guess the question is how do wild pokemon know it, and in SI, OC, Isekaijin stories custom moves are used to make the Isekaijin's other world knowledge be special so it's not something the natives do much, but I do really think it's neat.
>>
>>59575253
In contrast, I really liked it in Hyphen when Astra did the Bullet See Snipe thing. All in all, I guess what I have to say is that, I don't like this trope of natives not only not knowing something, but having some sort of mental barrier around that subject. Like what SELLOUTS and BoC does. There was another section where Lee refuses to look at the adult video section of a store, I wonder if SELLOUTS was referencing than when Andy looked at pokeporn vids.
So custom moves, having non-custom moves being invented during the story, or having a pokemon learn an HM or TM they normally couldn't learn seems cool. And honestly as is some TM choices can be weird anyway.

Although I have no idea where this trope came from.

>>59572523
Right, I was confusing the fact that Vulpix is (probably) the reincarnation of the Lioness from the beginning with something else. I don't think that is confirmed but it really does make sense in retrospect.
Although it's a bit sad Zinnia won't win and Lee will (not) fuck the phox, instead reamning in a limbo because of Fuggman.
>>

it's definitely passing the time so far. I just beat hilbert to have him let me use his pokemon I have only ever beat Pokemon ruby when I was younger, I found out about it on /vg/ /vn/ and while I can go back there, its not like I frequent it enough.
so far it's a handful, but I appreciate the straightforwardness and especially the varying battle perspectives; definitely seems like a high school story rather than a pokemon game
>>
>>59575253
>but I don't really buy Zinnia's speech about Lee being too cowardly in battlessince every battle highlights how brutal they are
Yeah. This is what I think is sort of a “nothing criticism of the MC” that highlights how morally good/superior they are. Also it goes in a reasonable grey area that you can at least slightly understand the mentor’s argument. I’m sure there’s a proper literary term for this. It’s a way to flaw your MC wiithout making them a braindead idiot at the start. I did variations of this with Plumeria lecturing Ian plenty so I’m not hating, it’s a useful tool to have.
>Zinnia won’t get the nutrition maximalist
Yeah, it’s unfortunate as they have good chemistry together and Zinnia definitely is a great counterpoint to Lee’s super knowledge but naivety/world experience.

I hate Brendaan being 10 and being allowed to go out into such a dangeroud world (that is simultaneously thought out). I suppose it’s to excuse his dumbass moments. He shoulld’ve at least been a teenager. Although I hate 10 year old protags in general as they’re rarely written as a straight up 10 year old

I only really noticed it in Lee's case because he's so strong already, like both him and Ian from PoPT are largely on upward tracks but Ian is significantly less overpowered in comparison to the people around him. Like the flaws aren't the most meaningful, but Lee is also really fucking strong, ironically I find PoPT just going out and having Tapu Bulu bless Deeling more acceptable. Especially because that happens as a direct result of Ian's character and not mechanical means.

>I hate Brendaan being 10 and being allowed to go out into such a dangeroud world
> "What? I didn't become a trainer at twelve because I wanted to wait, dad held me back two years to tutor me. Geography and politics were included!"
He's actually. Still it's a bit weird that twelve year olds are trusted to become trainers since, again, every battle highlights how brutal pokemon are. This is despite the fact Lee first meeting with pokemon is them helping him out of the goodness of their furry little hearts. Funnily enough the whole "Jenny and Joy" thing that Hyphen also has bothers me a little but more than this, but that's just my strong personal bias.

>>59575662
I liked the moments with Treecko, Shinx, and Corviknight. The pace slows down a nice but and Lee allows himself to be open, besides Shinx is cute and it ties the trauma of his past life and nuking into the story in way that isn't more:
>BURNING
>OLD PEOPLE BURNING
>EVERYONE PUT YOUR HANDS UP
I have the vague notion that it'll become annoying but it, alongside nutrition, haven't actually played THAT big of a role yet despite Lee's pokemon being so strong they bridge the gap between a 'bad' trainer like him, and good trainers like Zinnia, Andre, Brendan...etc

Borne of Caution (BoC) 26-to-30
I got kind of sad for Zinnia's sake when I read chapter 26. Not only does Lee and Vulpiz not think of her as a close friend, but they think her track record is abysmal when all she's done is help them successfully. He's only traveling with her because she's useful to him, textually.
I was surprised really, I guess it's because Lee is so meek, he acts nice to her, and doesn't actively think about her that much that I missed it until now. She poured her heart out to him already, told him her whole deal and about Aster, and Lee is still keeping secrets and she has so little reason to put faith in anything but his knowledge of pokemon. She's always trying to help him, even her not thinking of Lee and Brendon as friends is more her being afraid of closeness and guilt. And of course Lee knows so much about her already due to his meta knowledge, at least he tells her some about his past in 27.
Especially since the other love interest, the eventual main one Vulpix, has sort of just been a pokemon.
Even the narration translating what she's been saying 1:1, which happened very early on, was dropped for the patchy psychic speak that Lee can't fully make out, so she's sort of de-emphasized.

28 was I think the first log chapter I really liked, I might end up writing a log or journal chapter myself in the near future as an in-between-arca thing like IMO-anon did.

I'm not exactly a fan of Lee having to go to therapy, mainly because despite his lapses he's handling the situation well all things considered. Therapy isn't a fix-all solution and I think just being more open with Zinnia and getting more of a life outside of 24/7 devotion is his Pokemon is more of an answer. Despite myself I did kind of like the moment with Vulpix in 29
I didn't care much about the pokemon PoV in 30 but that's due to my biases.

> How long do they take on teams looking for their 1st badge before they become too strong for that level ? A season ? Multiple seasons ?
If they are consistently fighting everyday it might take a few weeks or a month.
> Will they grow to the strength of an 8-badger just by being a gym pokemon or is there some other ceiling ?
For most Pokemon, no. Eventually they will plateau at a 3-5th badge level if they aren’t training and some Pokemon just don’t grow that strong without intense effort, Butterfree isn’t ever going to be an eight badge Pokemon, a Dragonite would get there without much training other than doing the equivalent of going on a daily walk. Higher badge Pokemon used at a gym are chosen for being stronger Pokemon and that’s on top of any training or experience they have, but by the time they reach the 6-8 badge level, becoming better is a lot more effort and by just fighting every now and then they likely won’t reach a higher level.
>Does the gym eventually end up with an army of pokemon ?
The league manages most of them as loans to the Gym but the Gym can do it themselves but usually choose not to since it costs a lot.

It's a high-end Aura contract, which is why nearly every pokemon can learn it. You sacrifice all offense for a nigh-impenetrable defense for that specific moment, or so goes the official narrative.
The REAL truth is that Protect is a Prayer directly to Arceus, who grants divine near-perfect Protection to anyone who invokes him, but also added the condition that repeated invocations have a higher chance of failing because he's an asshole like that. It explains why even level 1 shitters are capable of executing it flawlessly and to its full power. It's a shortened version of an ancient prayer predating all civilization, condensed into a single word, a plea, a truth: Protect. Also why it's Normal type.

Checking the RR comments for BoC chapter 21 was sort of odd to me, why do people care so much about the nickname Dolittle? Even Lee just shrugs it off because he assume the movie exists in the pokemon universe, is it actually important?

Borne of Caution (BoC) 31-to-35

You know Andre's description of the Dark-type as being the type of true emotions and type of violence itself, is funny. Both because of how edgy it is, the fact I feel like every type can be described like that, and because of how wrong the first part sounds to me. All Dark-type moves have secondary effects, they're underhanded and don't play fair, but seem close in essence to Normal-types, and a lot of its moves are psychological tricks with a theme of obscuring reason or martial arts moves.

I actually feel bad for him, he was using setup moves, evasion, swords dance, dominating the fight, but Ash just nuked Absol with a Thunderbolt. It's hard not to pity the guy even if he's an asshole, just because of how overpowered everyone else is where he has to spend years to get to their level and even then can't compare.

Also, funnily enough, despite the fic's occasional mention of NUTRITION, it's only become a real explicit focus at chapter 32. Honestly I can believe Ash, Andre, Misty, May, really a lot of the kid characters not being in the know about Nutrition, but really I expected professional battlers, or at least Brock, to know about Nutrition as well. But I guess that's standard Iskeaijin fare.
Chapter 33 is also when the therapy starts, reading out made me wonder why Lee had to be saying these things to a therapist and not Zinnia. Like really, she already decided to not do her stupid plan, so it only really exists for mellow drama, and I'd rather Lee talk to someone important about what happened. Besides I still don't really buy it, Lee is remarkably functional, I don't think the story needed this and it doesn't really benefit from it's inclusion.
Also every time I see the pokemon Maractus I get SELLOUTS flashbanged.
>>
>>59581457 (me)
I like Corvisquire running away and Fuggman using that to give Lee a real reason for disliking Zinnia due to what she says, but with the previous chapter and my knowledge of future ones, chapter 34 feels like the start of the slow down. Honestly I'm a bit surprised Lee went to battle Watson anyways and didn't go looking for Corvisquire instead, it feels like a sort of selfish, out-of-character action from him.
Also I thought people were over-exaggerating when they said Lee was cheating with Vulpix, but using a pokemon outside of a battle to help win is just cheating. I guess I only take issue with it because it's an official league match, it just feels like cheating and Lee doesn't even consider it might be wrong. So it's not like he's being malicious, just empty-headed, I dunno feels weird for him to not even consider it since he does care about the league.
Then again he and Vulpix seem determined to go against Zinnia's good advice about maintaining a distance.

Even with Vulpix, I'm surprised he won the match against Watson. Losing a pokemon right before a match just feels like the sort of mental debuff that would cause a trainer even on their A-game to lose. But no, Vulpix is just that strong. And honestly I think Lee being so passive here kind of lowered my opinion of him.

I liked the stuff on move patenting, very scummy, I'm gonna steal it. Although I didn't find the whole sequence that interesting, patenting moves just to get money kinda feels unimportant, plot wise. And the ERROR! Too much damage stuff.
Still didn't care for the pokemon PoV again, at least Swablu knows Corviquire is fine.

Also -2 for having a in-universe thread appear in a fic, only S&F can get away with it.
>>
>>59578427
Drew please...
>>
>>59581571
Glad to have another SELLOUT, in the thread.
>>
Which thread MCs do you think your MC could take in a Pokemon battle? What about a no holds barred street fight?
>>
>>59581691
I'm assuming in the latter scenario the characters are bloodlusted.
Rhys could take Andy or Drew in a pokemon battle, probably? At least Maractus and Cheri hasn't shown herself to be impressive. Andrews special ability of not existing within fate doesn't do much because Rhys doesn't come from a deterministic universe. A street fight is more even but I think Andy or Drew are more likely to kill Rhys than not.
Oh yeah he could beat John CSP is a pokemon battle as well but he losses even harder, just gets bodied in a fight, dead within seconds.
Ian PoPTand WoL are too strong for him, in both categories. He loses to Kuzey in a pokemon battle but probably beats him 9 times out of 10 in a street fight to the death.
Will Spice and Fox is probably even in both categories.
>>
>>59581457
I like Ash wank when he's considered the side character.
>>
>>59581717
Honestly, I'm very neutral on Ash, I just don't think about him. I think I get what Fuggman was going for, Ash mentions he started doing better battle-prepping and training which was his weakpoint. so he beats the brick-head-against-wall strategy man, showing him he needs better battle prep or he's just going to get stat checked.
But Ash and Andre also don't show up much after this, they aren't very important and it doesn't feel like they can measure up to Lee despite the lip service paid to Lee's weaknesses. Part of that is my view of the story being tainted from meta info, but I would have preferred Ash have been clever, rather then him just, literally, glass Absol and all of it's Double Team clones.
That and, to a lesser degree, I'm not fond of stat checks. I would rather have Ash be clever, especially because Ash already sort of feels like a stat-check-guy, so him learning to stat check better doesn't feel like that much of an improvement.
>>
People who Ashwank prior to gen 4 didn't watch the anime. Pikachu wasn't a powerhouse outside of plot moments until then and Ash himself was still fumbling blindly until Paul kicked his ass in gear.

Borne of Caution (BoC) 36-to-40
Starting to near the end (45~) now, either way, Chapter 36 has what I consider Vulpix's first real romance flag, as well as the whole 'Ninetails' live for a thousand years, thingy. Well I don't care much for it, I don't think I've tried to hide the fact I prefer Zinnia over Vulpix/Ninetails, and besides that I don't like pokepihilia with non-anthromons.
There's also the 'why am I thing' and I don't like it, mainly because I know the ending is that she's Giratina bore. Yeah I kind of get the point, she's different from other pokemon, ignoring the fact other pokemon don't seem to sense this and treat her differently for it. Corvisquire just thinks she's crazy. So it doesn't really affect her character much. I more or less understand her angst about it either way but her being that way in the first place just feels like another blessing Ian already has in his favor, when he's already so strong. (Although I will admit I myself have been to harsh on things like Seed Sniper when it isn't as important as coveragance, it's just a useful comparison point with Hyphen)

Also it's really funny when Lee thinks of his career as being a 'low-level trainer' when he's hot shit. He's even rated as part of the top 10 up-and-coming trainers expected to appear in the league. Aarons from Silph Co calls him an excerpt.

Team Rocket showed up again, and honestly I think their inclusion is kind of a waste. Meowth can speak english and Team Rocket is rather fun, why not give him at least one moment to talk with Vulpix before she evolves?

Oh yeah and Courtney (Groomer Prime) shows up. Lee's an idiot for allowing her on the team, seriously? He can manage venomous hatred for Team Rocket but can't get Brendan to give Courtney the boot. Just call his dad and explain the FULL situation since Birch is in on the Isekaijin secret. She's even wearing her red hoodie, she practically screams Team Magma.
>>
>>59583369
Come on she's a red-and-pink chick with a Camerupt and a Mightyena! I don't care if he never played ORAS or read the manga, he's played Emerald tons of time and the most obvious Team Magma Gruny/Admin walks in front of him and he losses his braincells. And Zinnia is stupid, she's dumb, her plan is bad, why is he going along with it? They don't even tell Brendan, even Brendan's pokemon know about Courtney.
I think the Courtney stuff is the first thing in the story I actively dislike. Seriously, Zinnia lets herself get rage baited by Brendan, a 12 year old, while she and Lee are letting him be groomed by Courtney.

What I mean to say is that this feels forced.

It's interesting that Type Energy is something pokemon generate, I ended up doing something different where it exists in nature with different environments having different concentrations of each element, sometimes to dangerous extents. That type energy in the environment is then effectively, inhaled and exhaled by pokemon, used to generate moves and power their bodily functions.

Also I think pokemon being able to learn any move of any type and use it at max effectiveness, like Lee teaching his Grovyle Feint Attack, is bullshit. I do think it's a good example of Isekaijin knowledge as the explanation makes sense for why natives wouldn't figure it out. But it is bullshit.

Oh yeah Chapter 38 is also the act 1 finale... honestly it doesn't feel like a finale, there's still a lot of loose threads and the wind down after the climax is a bit long. I do like ending it on Cournety though, it's a pretty good signpost for her.

Devon trying to make artificial evo stones is interesting enough to hold it's own story, very fun idea, I'll be surprised if something like that doesn't show up in IMO.

Corvisquire is one pokemon PoV I like, he's such a dick, and fun as well.

As another side note, it's weird that Nobel/Totem/Alpha pokemon are called Giant Gene pokemon in BoC.
>>
>>59583372
If you were getting groomed by a hot chick would you want your idiot furry babysitter to step in?
Alternatively, Lee's natural perversion made him forget that Brendan is a pokemon game protagonist and not an h-game protagonist and that he can't show Courtney his 8 badges and super rod to fix her right then and there
>>
>>59583428
Nah I don't blame Brendan. Zinnia and Lee on the other hand are dumb, they're Emma level dumb. Seriously, they can already tell Brendan is salivating over her and that she's a Magama Admin.
It's so dumb, and Zinnia lowers herself to Brendan's 12 year old level after he over-reacts to her asking Courtney about Devon.
Seriously everyone knows but him, it's so dumb. They responsible for him, Birch trusted Lee with his son's lively hood and safety and Lee pulls this shit?
Wtf
>>
I fuck with all good-faith criticism but if any of it actually stings it's definitely my Emma becoming shorthand for "dumbass" lmao
>>
>>59583540
I mean, the homeless don't get much education
>>
>>59583540
I was thinking more of Emma:
>Man Corbeau, aka Lysandre and Giovanni's love child, would be such a great mayor.
Although Emma!IMO, Lee, and Zinnia!BoC do endanger a child. Although I don't which is worse: Kuzey actually getting molested and almost killed or Zinnia and Lee knowingly keeping Brendan in the dark.
But Lee is probably the worse person given he was personally entrusted by Birch and chose to put Brendan in danger. I don't care if the original idea was Zinnia's.
>>
>>59583540
Someone has to be the fall guy/gal for stupid moments that help setup or exasperate conflict. The key is to not make it the same person each time. I realized this about 3.5 arcs too late with Selene in PoPT
>>
>>59583372
>I ended up doing something different where it exists in nature with different environments having different concentrations of each element, sometimes to dangerous extents
Kinda like mtg color mana. It's a neat take and does a lot to explain regional form type differences.
>>
>>59583496
I don't blame him either, I'm saying that Lee was being courteous (and retarded)

Actually... wait shit that's probably where the inspiration came from I've been an MtG fan since elementary school. I didn't even realize that, although aside from subconscious inspirations I was thinking of the Neathbow from Sunless Sea. An illegal spectrum of light that warps reality.
>>
>>59583680
I probably wouldn't be so angry at it if Lee didn't take every chance he had to condemn Team Rocket. Like if he didn't take them seriously his reaction to Courtney would make more sense, but this is just so hard to square, how can he be this much of a doormat? Not to mention Zinnia, hot headed Zinnia. Although unlike Lee she has a history of bad idiot plans.

HEy guys, I;m going to write some Isekaijin where the main character is a guy who is reborn as a hot chick, taking special knowledge about the games with them to the Poekmon world. They only fuck other girls (ostensibly bisexual, really just straight in a girl's body, trans-gay) and are instantly liked by everyone and get really strong right away bcause of their unique knowledge on nutrition and custom battle moves. ALso they discover the Fairy type soon after arrival, because the in-universe professors hadn't gotten around to it They have zero survival expertise and have never touched a chicken or goat or horse before, or even owned a dog, but that doesn't matter as this is POKEMON and IRL animal handling has no basis on it. Apparently that is the popular reader formula.
