The Red there wasn't an edgy deviantart character and the era for that style was already at an end anyways. It was the first major depiction of Red in the west and he was basically a slightly more serious Ash. Red from Adventures was also just a friendly kid but back then few fans actually read the manga, most just got information about it from secondary or tertiary sources and thought manga Red was some edgy badass who mutilated Arboks.
