Thoughts on the retro Call of Duty games?

HEY SARGE, YOU'RE PASSING ON THE RIGHT

Pavlov's House is my favorite mission in an FPS to this day. Defending the building from German soldiers while bombarded by Panzer tanks was very fun. The sheer amount of enemies, how they come from every direction, explore every floor, throw grenades through doorways, and kill most of your allies makes it quite difficult. The need to rush to anti-tank weapons in the open when Panzers arrive further adds to the challenge. Ran out of health kits midway, so for half the mission I healed off pick-ups from Germans' corpses. Very fun stuff.

Bomber mission from United Offensive is my least favorite one. The entirety of it takes place on a plane, and you have to shoot off enemy aircraft. Cool on paper, but hit detection literally doesn't work most of the time, which makes the experience nothing but insufferable. Bruteforced my way through it and was overjoyed when the torture session reached its end.

Enjoyed them back in the day, still enjoy them.
Though playing on Veteran is a gruelling experience, I'll admit I savescummed my way through Pavlov's house (retarded fuckass mission btw, shit comes flying from everywhere and you're dead out of nowhere) and now trying to claw my way through that factory.

Call of Duty 1 was pretty mindblowing at the time. Even though playing it now it's quite primitive, things like suppressing fire don't really make any difference to enemy AI, your squad mates don't do shit... Back then, it was the most immersive gaming experience I had had up to that point. Comparing it to contemporaries like Medal of Honour or RTCW, which were really just Doom/Half Life style boomer shoters with a WW2 skin, it felt like a much more realistic experience.

Call of Duty 2 was the best, I thought. More of the missions were about fighting skirmishes with a squad, and less of that lone hero Rambo stuff. I still enjoyed the series up until like, MW2 and Black Ops, but it was obviously losing its way by the time it became weird Tom Clancy Bourne Identity Hollywood shlock, and not the grounded, somewhat sombre portrayal of war in CoD 1 and 2.

Pavlov's house on Veteran made me feel like I was experiencing a real home invasion. The sounds of your allies and gunfire slowly waning as German boots get louder and louder made my stomach sink

Awesome

I loved the first 2 games but never tried the console spin offs and 3, were they any good?
>>
>>11981449
Pretty much my experience more or less. Getting COD1 and Band of brothers boxset on the same day was one kino summer afternoon for a young little shit me.

That being said, COD2 wasn't as good. It was better in terms of spectacle, sure, but the tempo was too high, grenade spam was annoying.

>>11981856
Unfortunately not. None of them. People who circlejerk them (they do exist) never played the PC ports and lack proper context to compare them.
They run like shit, bad framerate, horrible FOV, janky feeling all around.

CoD classic (CoD1 port on console) is my favorite CoD easily. It also plays much better with checkpoints rather than quick save bullshit (aka save states).

The variety of levels, huge variety of weapons you can hold at once, teammates who actually do shit, the peeking around cover, the brutally hard difficulty where you have to be very slow and tactical. It's a ton of fun on Veteran
>>
United Offensive is better than the main game
>>
I played A LOT of Call of Duty and UO multiplayer. So much so that I started a club for Call of Duty LAN games at my college at the time, I think we nearly reach full capacity one evening.

Never played any of them after Call of duty 2 and 4. I think the only thing that rivaled CoD for us as a wargame was Battlefield 1942 which I also played a bunch of.

Big Red One is great. It's got half the cast of Band of Brothers doing the voice acting in it. Obviously it's different from the PC games but for a console shooter it's pretty good.
>>
>>11981856
Worse than the first 2
>>
Would anyone be up for a round of United Offensive MP?
Pure vanilla, no mods, no anything.

My thoughts
I enjoyed CoD but I only ever bought 1 and the exp pack. In the end your squad is just for decoration so if you dont "shoot the hinges" the game wont progress at all.

I pirated 4 for the campaign only and it was worth the bandwidth at least. Tried replaying it a year or two ago and I just dropped it halfway through.

cod 1 holds up

being a kid and watching this made me wish I worked in an office and got to play videogame with my coworkers and now all I want is to burn the office down with all my coworkers in it
>>
COD 2 along with Half-Life 2 are the only games that blew my mind for how cinematic they were.
>>
Currently replaying UO after finishing base game this week.
I just passed the bridge behind Foy and destroyed the Tiger, which was an absolute bitch trying to get over that bridge.

And I was wondering:
Did UO start with endlessly spawning enemies until you pass a trigger? Especially playing them back to back, I was actually surprised to see that in the OG enemies simply stopped appearing at one point after I shot enough of them.

Here I kill an MG42 gunner just for the next dude to come out behind a shed and manning it. Then I shoot that one. Another appears, and so on, until the rifle was empty.

UO is infamous for artifically extending the campaign with seemingly endless waves
>>
>>11981449
True I was there
>>
>>11981449
it's the only CoD game where your teammates actually do shit. You can literally just lay down in a corner and your AI teammates will beat the mission for you, even on Veteran, it's actually pretty cool.

When I last time played first CoD and united offensive, fire selector and how useless automatic fire is was a surprise.
At the same time crouch and point firing semi automatic is overpowered.
I think Big Red One is best refined classic cod. It is easy but it has varied campaign and it is first one that actually tried a story. To my knowledge it is only one where you fight fascists.
>>
>>11984843
Well shit that explains a lot. Probably also why I never managed to beat the last (?) level with the russians at the train station, because I was getting slaughtered by endless waves of krauts. It's also the only level I can remember at all from UO, but then again the last time I played this was probably almost or already 20 years ago.

I bought CoD3 only for the cover.
>>
>>11985602
Well the other extreme is them being completely useless and dying immediately so in the end you're just one-man-armying anyway.

war is hell

I want a ww2 franchise where I can play as the actual good guys.
