Is this game underrated?

It was a great game with a dark and gritty atmosphere and clever puzzles. Also quite violent.
>>
I think that's for the best. Great game for those who know.
>>
it's not very fun to play

>get this game as kid
>playing it a few days later
>friend comes over
>he has a can of fart spray
>starts spraying all over the room until I hit him and kick him out
>now every time I see this game I remember the smell

>Is this game underrated?
Definitely, easily a top 5 game for the PSX. It's like MM:Legends or Tomba! where it's super highly regarded in certain circles, but otherwise wasn't thought of as an all time classic on release.

I love it and it's sequel, and I wish they'd make a third one in the same vein.
>>
>>11986427
The fuck are you talking about? It got really high scores on release.
>>
>>11986349
Yes it is, it's insanely fun, tight and precise
>>
>>11986439
It was quite well regarded by certain people, but it certainly didn't get the kind of universal praise that FFVII got at the time despite deserving it more. It was frequently regarded as an 8/10 game, something quite good but not really highly remarkable.
>>
Oddworld has always been considered one of the best PS1 game don't know what your talking about op

It was even in the PlayStation classic and was planned in PlayStation all star
>>
>>11986020
Generally considered a bona fide classic
>Is this game underrated?
Amazingly yes, as it should be widely understood by all to be one of the finest video games ever created
>>
>underrated
It sold 3.5 million (a fucking lot for 1997) and is the 23rd best selling PS1 game of all time, beating out Tony Hawk 2, RE3, Twisted Metal 2, every Ridge Racer, Driver and many others that would surprise you. It was such a hit that Lorne Lanning was able to create an disastrously mediocre franchise off the back of it, surviving only on the good will of the first two games and the occasional decent entry like Stranger's Wrath.

Is it underrated? No, not with the demographic you'd find on this site anyway. Problem is that zoomers are positively allergic to any and all cinematic platformers because they find them "clunky" and can't wrap their head around the slower and more methodical mindset needed to get through a title like Oddysee or Exoddus. Oddworld definitely isn't coming back but its hard to care when it peaked at the second entry in 1998. Lorne's plans for an Oddworld cinematic universe and media franchise were always retarded wishful thinking.

>underrated
In the sense that it was a massive critical and commercial hit when it came out and both the game and its direct sequel were very well regarded for years until the wobbly direction the series took in the following generations made the brand fizz out little by little: no it's not "underrated".

In the sense that it's an old game of niche genre and it's not trending on social media literally right now: yes it's absolutely and criminally underrated and it's quite the hidden gem imo
>>
>>11986503
How the fuck is it "hidden".

>Is this game underrated?
No, it received massive acclaim back in the day and sold a shitton of copies. If anything it's kinda forgotten today because everything that isn't the same 5 IPs recycled to this day over and over gets forgotten.

it's my favorite game, so to me it's definitely not
I feel like it's been somewhat forgotten in recent years, even on places like here; I'll see PS1 threads pop up and after ~150 or more posts I won't even see it mentioned
to me it shows that 2D was still the way to go, even when 3D was the new hotness, though I respect the devs that had to lay the groundwork. those pre-rendered backgrounds just refuse to age
I have a lot to say about Oddworld but it'd mostly just be me sucking its dick and lamenting the loss of highly creative worldbuilding and quality games in general so fuck it
>>
Their website ran for years (and still does, I assume) taking fan mail and posting art of the series.
You can totally go through it or the internet archive for a lot of really cool stuff going from the late 90's to probably now.

Same. I still think it's amazing it was made in the first place.
It's a shame there's so little contemporary Oddworld content to enjoy online.

In what way? JarJar is a Jamaican, Abe is Filipino, hence the indentured servitude.
>>
>>11986020
it was really popular at its time of release, that and its sequel. I remember all my friends had Oddysee and Exoddus but would never play them which pissed me off. Too hard and only one player. I ended up playing the first on PC when I stayed with some family friends for a week, fucking incredible game.
>>
>>11988553
They're a complete product of their time, all later efforts on more advanced consoles seemed to fall short. It would have been nice if we got some type of esoteric point and click in the same world back then.
>>
>>11988470
Did farting even do anything? The mechanic where you could possess your own farts was only added in the second game wasnt it?
>>
>>11990563
>Did farting even do anything?
In Oddysee, the fart was used to signal the end of the repeat-after-me whistle puzzles.
In Exoddus, you could also use them to make mudokons take a single step away from your arse
