How did it feel to play Far Cry when it came out? Did its gameplay and graphics feel groundbreaking, like a glimpse of the future, making you excited for what the gaming industry had in store next?

I was blown away, even if my PC was only capable of 10 FPS but I didnt care. a dream come true
>>
It was mindblowing. A true next-gen experience (at the time). It easily mogged both HL2 and Doom 3.

>It easily mogged both HL2 and Doom 3.
You're the first person I've seen think this way. What's your reasoning? Graphics alone or gameplay?
>>
Farcry is about when the current mofern era of gaming began, where a game from 2004 and a game from 2024 were at this point indistinguishable aside from scaling up to 4k with otherwise similar visuals and gameplay. You just slap "HD remake" label on it and sell it on ps4.
>>
>>11987889
Both. Of course the graphics were amazing, especially considering the scale of the maps but even the interior levels were spectacular and no worse looking than Doom 3 except the caves maybe. The high tech labs in particular look spectacular. HL2 was like half a generation behind in comparison. Then in terms of gameplay you have these big sandbox-like levels that let you go wild with how to accomplish objectives which HL2 or Doom 3 just didn't do. They just had tiny corridor levels with no freedom.

not him but i felt excited by it even when i played it years after playing hl2, because in far cry, coming up on a camp of enemies and ambushing them actually felt like, i dunno like you had to approach it the way you would do that in real life, you really needed a plan, to set yourself up, to keep track of all them when they split up, to try to stay hidden etc. They felt like capable humans that were just as deadly as you. Whereas you'll recall that hl2 encounters were the kind of boring repetition of holding down the trigger while the dodo-like penguin-men run into your fire and topple. In that way far cry felt like a simulation, like combat training for real life, vs the very gamey contrivance of hl2

btw it must be mentioned in any far cry thread that you're not going to get that experience if you try to play it now unless you uninstall a broken patch which comes with it that accidentally gives the enemy xray vision
>>
>>11987718
Who gave that yellow monster a gun?!
>>
>>11987920
>gives the enemy xray vision
Damn no wonder if was crazy hard when I played it a few years ago.
>>
I never felt that the gameplay was particularly thrilling. If you compare it to Thief or Deus Ex it's barely anything.

>actually play as a sniper and take out your targets without being noticed
the game was great, hated what they did to the console ports

This, ignore zoomer threads

fucking kek

looked good but game was boring, had more fun with quake, half life, hitman and max payne

Idk if it was 1 or 2 but I spent more time creating multiplayer maps and messing with the level creator in general than playing the actual game.
>>
>>11987894
My thoughts exactly. While I have no problem considering consoles up to and including GC and Xbox as "retro", I draw the line at 2003 for PCs. Far Cry and Half-Life 2 are anything but retro.

Fockin wild, m8

My graphic card was way too old!
>>
>>11989827
Same. The visuals and especially the physics were mind-blowing, but we had more fun with multiplayer Quake 3 or Counter Strike 1.5. At least these ran fine on everyone's PC.
>>
Not a retro game

can you prove it?

My answer is always "You had to be there" if I reply at all

It came out in 2004.
>B-But you can't run it on a PC from 2001!
Windows XP came out in 2001. Far Cry runs on Windows XP. Windows XP counts as a retro platform for titles released prior to December 2007. Plus, I wouldn't be surprised if you *could* run Far Cry on strictly 2001-era parts with high enough specs.
>>
>>11990284
If I remember correctly Far Cry supported shader model 1.1 which means it could technically run on a Geforce 3.

I guess the thrill comes from coming across a vast array of enemy encampments and checkpoints on an island that’s quite large (like an island that’s 3 minutes away to swim to yup you can go there) where you have total freedom. Basically, it allows you to tackle a number of situations in any number of ways. Long distance, run and gun (not recommended but definitely doable), identifying targets and surprising them from where YOU feel they are most vulnerable.

Side note>>11987920
i I feel like this is why I quit my last play through. I’ll have to make sure in future playthroughs I get the right version because yeah, it did seem like I had a lot more trouble ambushing them this time around and their ai just seemed generally broken in other ways like NOT seeing me while standing in a bush right in front of them. On release I don’t remember these issues. Kind of hilarious back then sometimes patches or updates actually broke a game that was working perfectly fine but now we get AAA games that are broken and finished content day one locked behind a paywall and the game generally is bug ridden and needs months of patches to be even playable.
>>
>>11990324
That's basically what I was thinking. High end 2001 hardware.

Its been like this since at least 2011.
Shogun 2

Broken at launch but I still finished it cuz hype and Shogun 1 was cool
Forget about it because its glossy but lame
Fire it up again several months later
The game now has actual game mechanics

2011

I mean, it obviously is. I felt I was pointedly 'going retro' when I picked it up in 2009 for a few bucks from the old games shop
>>
Anyone else think Instincts was a way better game?
>>
>>11987712
Far Cry was my fave of 2004, and I wasn't even really aware of it until the demo came out, it was all Half Life 2 vs Doom 3 in the media hype. It didn't look or run great on my 9200 Pro but still better than most anything else I could run. The level design and ambush action were the biggest appeals, starting on boats finding the ideal starting spot to kill enemies one by one, the M16 can carry you through most of the game. Anyone that complains about broken/cheating AI is a newfag playing with a patch that broke the game, iirc 1.2 or so is the last non-broken version, basically don't play the version with save states, go auto-save only.

I fucking hated that final level tho, took me so many tries to beat the endless stream of rocket muties with limited ammo

btw picrel was my submission to Gamespy's annual Gamers' Choice nomination, was so proud of that and being able to represent the true GOA2004

That same vote now would be totally different I feel like. HL2 has lost a lot of shine and battlefront being so low is either a product of its time or someone cheated that voting system. Also see battlefield Vietnam threads about as often as dedicated half-life 2 threads so again, be interesting to see that same vote today. Also far cry would be much higher rated.
>>11991785
I’ve heard some people on the board say this but I just really doubt it as much as I love my og xbox this thing was a pc juggernaut in terms of graphics. I remember being lucky enough for our family to need an upgrade pc right around the release of far cry (or I had my buddy Chris build me one I can’t remember, fuck my memory) and to this day I just don’t see how the Xbox could do it better. However instincts is cheap so based off so many recommends here I’m going to have to try it.
