Great looking assets, best of the 2D games, wasted on this turd. Would've worked in a mainline Genesis Sonic too as only character sprites used the 32X

I wouldn't have minded if they kept Knuckles & Co as the main characters and the theme park setting, it was the awful experimental gameplay that killed it. The tether meant level design had to be simple, bland and devoid of enemies, since what zone you played is random they could not properly scale difficulty from easy to hard and they even added characters designed to sabotage you to the randomized partner select... with further begs the question, why randomize your partner in the first place. Their attempts to innovate this game can be summed up with this image.
>Genesis
In Spring 95, honestly spruce it up a bit and release it on the Saturn, it would need a Sonic(Knuckles) game far more than the Genesis at that point. Probably would have sold a million more Saturn's as an early pack in if the gameplay lived up to 3&K.

Knuckles' Chaotix is fine.. In my experience of emulating it decades later and never having to actually sink money into it. Which I'm totally fine with. Is it fun to mindlessly bounce around in for one afternoon? Yes. Is it worth $200? No. Is it Sonic 4? No.
>>

Why do the Chaotix stages look higher res than the other Sonic games
>>
>>11988508

No idea. They don't look that way to me. To me they look higher color depth. I always assumed the expanded color palette of the 32X was being used. But no, upon investigation it's used only for character sprites (so they can scale) and for the bonus stages/bosses.
>>
it's so clunky, bros

why didn't they just make a real sonic game

this is why the 32x failed
>>
>>11988508
Your eyes are probably being tricked by the baked-in depth of field blur effect on the backgrounds, which makes the rest of the graphics look sharper in comparison
>>
>>11988649
it could have saved the saturn... not like this segasisas...
>>
>>11988363
No, it would not work on the genesis. The sprites compete for palette entries. Putting the sprites on the 32x leaves all 4 palettes for backgrounds.

You know what is a real shame, the genesis only having 4 palettes, doubling that would not have taken much additional die space. If the annotated die shots are correct, then the CRAM takes up less then 2% of the die.

>a bunch of characters I don't know or care about
>a gimmick that feels like you're just fucking glitching through terrain half the time
WHAT WERE THEY THINKING
>>
>>11988726

That was sacrificed so colors needed for Master System backwards compatibility could be blocked off for it, not kidding

separate tile memory and palettes between the Genesis and the 32X means more assets total + more colors total

unless you mean resolution, then no it's the same

I will never understand why no-one come out thinking of a re-conception of this title, using the soundtrack, but removing all the lame mechanics.

Like Sonic Triple Trouble 16-bit, for example.
>>
>>11988363
This title give an assist on creating a Sonic title similar to the Game Boy Mario and the Six Gold coins. Originally in the prototypes there was some kind of a map of the island.
>>
i heard playing this with another person makes it more fun
>>
>>11991960
that's true for most games.

Amazing not a single Sonic fan game autist hasn't done anything to salvage the game, from mechanics to level design.
>>
>>11990473
It's a total disgrace to the 'hog community, sadly.
>>
>>11990473
Imagine if someone did a overhaul hack where the Combi Ring gimmick is replaced with Sonic Advance 3's Tag Action.
Would the game be a little bit more justified?
>>
>>11992483
they have. 32x hacks are too pointless tho for anyone to overhaul this mess like 3D Blast directors cut
>>
>>11992660
Funny that the Doom autists fixed their shitty 32X game before the Sonic autists did.

That's 95% of Sonic games
>>
>>11993172
How do you "fix" Chaotix?

That Sonic mod doesn't even entirely work. If you select Sonic through the combicatcher the game crashes.
>>
>>11993461
The answer is "fix the level design", but you can only do that by making the level design the same as your usual Sonic game, which makes the bungiecord deal completely arbitrary and makes them game more generic.
>>
>>11993461
chaotix's problem isnt that it "doesnt have sonic"
>>11993481
you could keep the vertically-oriented level design but get rid of the pants on head retarded level selector gimmick and have proper difficulty scaling. when i actually sat down and beat the whole think a couple years ago there was surprisingly a lot of cool stuff in there.
