I played BOF on the GBA a while back and was bored as all hell. Came back to it on the SNES a few years later and I'm loving it. I do admit, the only reason I came back to it was because I found you end up recruiting a cute fox tiger girl, which I admit is the only reason I'm playing it. But the game is fun.

I never said I hated it, just that I was bored of the combat. But I will play BOF 1 then 2 just for Katt. Yes, really now.

What's the problem?
Also Bleu best girl.

I remember finding brap of fire II on gba pretty creepy as a kid when the bishop turns into a massive corpse man or corpse dragon or whatever. The game had an overall occult feeling to me like I was participating in dark magics overall. But that's how a lot of JRPGs felt to me as a Christian kid, pretty interesting emotion I kinda miss it

go to /x/ for that emotion lol

That's because it IS occult. It has hidden meanings, occult literally means hidden. It's pretty great when you realize you're playing as Ryu which is
_______ individual
and the story of Breath of Fire is his entire lineage and ancestors. I'll let you dig for the answer, if you care to go down that rabbit hole ;)

The catgirl is only in BoF II. This series has it's fans but none of them stick with me. BoF I is a cakewalk once you get the dragon transformation. BoF II is really hard with some baffling design choices that I can only describe as deliberate anti-QoL features.

Alien Ressurection. I hated how the game looked and played on my first try 15 years ago, but I gave it another chance and I ended up loving it. It does get a bit of getting used to at the start.

Also Goldeneye. We put money in common with a friend in the early 00's to buy an N64 with the game because of how highly praised it was and we had such buyers remorse we couldn't stop laughing. Laughing at how shitty the enemy models and their "photo realistic" faces looked.
I also gave it another chance some 20+ years later and once you get past the awful graphics it's a fun game.

The Dragon transformations were pretty broken in the first one.
The 2nd one is good but i got filtered hard by the final dungeon

Inplayed a few hours of this game and the early game was retardedly easy. I didnt have to grind at all and I felt like I was just completing dungeons with no effort. Does it ever pick up? I’m not against trying it again.

I used to highly dislike Compile shooters, I still have some issues with them but after giving them more of a chance their style clicked with me a little better and I sort of got how to play them. Nobody can deny that Compile had amazing programmers who could do unnatural things on each console.

Discovered their game gear games from the Switch collection (which I emulated to try out the exclusive new gg aleste 3) and I have to say they're not my favorites but they're mad underrated.

It's particularly well made in this game because the church is initially shown as something safe and comforting, being associated with the hero's childhood and his father.
(i just made this AI sloppa for my post)

Breath of Fire 1 is sort of special to me because I regarded it as a lower quality RPG on release when I played it. I liked FFIV or FFVI more and just couldn't conceive of why someone would play BoF1 over the two (BoF2 was another story).

Ironically, years later, I really like BoF1 for just how basic and to the point it is. It's a bog standarded JRPG about a hero's journey, there's no real nonsense to the game so you pretty much just power through dungeons and bosses in a straight line. Exposition is kept to a minimum, as are sidequests and minigames. The game itself isn't super low budget like a lot of JRPGs were at the time. I consider it something worth replaying from time to time.

BoF2 actually lost points as I got older due to poor localization and an aggressive encounter rate dragging things down, along with a story that became somewhat stale due to later games in the genre reusing beats from it. The game isn't that fun to play since you never really feel super powerful like in BoF1 as you go on, nor are the mechanics enjoyable enough to play on its own.

I guess other games that grew on me were dungeon crawlers, I initially played the D&D games and didn't care for them and then tried Wizardry briefly, but after I got in my 20s I came back and found them pretty fun.

I think the dragon transformations work better in 1 than 2, you should feel powerful when you transform into one. 2's single use, drain all of your AP forms that aren't even that strong are hugely disappointing.

Sure, they make BoF1 far easier when you get them, but that's sort of the point. And ironically on a recent playthrough I started using Karn's transformations more, they actually way eclipsed most dragon forms until Agni/Rudra just because dragons dealt static damage while Karn's forms scaled with levels and weapons.

No wonder your franchise is dead.
