fpbp. even back in the day, crash was a "hey neato, that was a fun game" but didnt blow your mind in any capacity. it felt like the same 16 bit platformers we already played to death already but with some gimmicky 3d taped onto it. mario 64/OOT were completely revolutionary shifts in game design that truly utilized the third dimension in ways basically no ps1 game actually does (well).

I barely played Crash at all growing up, I played it a couple times but never beat more than a few levels or had any strong attachment to it. I've beat both N.Sane Trilogy and the OG Trilogy in recent years and both are exceptional.

Each sonic game on gensis honestly is pretty different. For two, the mindset you need is: "How quickly can I beat this stage?", and remember that the upper paths are usually faster than the lower ones. In addition, you need to relise, that the game has what I like to call " passivity traps": when you get a section where you can just hold right without having "earned" it, it's most likely a trap, where if you're not careful, you'll run into a wall or something. The game's highly based on replayability, so don't feel discouraged if your inital runs will be a bit slow.

3D Sonic games had vastly more draw distance. For a game where you move fast you need to see more in front of you than the pitiful screen space you get with the 2D 16 bit gaming. This is why the genesis games aren't as fun until you mastered all the trial & error.

They're piss easy games to beat if you play slowly and carefully. You take damage, you grab a ring and you're safe again. The fun is in utilizing the physics and different routes to plan out how to go fast and beat your previous time.

Sonic 1 was pretty tough, definitely harder than games like Castlevania, Mega Man, Ninja Gaiden, Contra, etc, especially since it has such limited continues.

Never finished Sonic 2 and 3 because I hated them.

Nta but 2 seemed a little more refined than 1, which makes sense given that Naughty Dog had a little more experience by then. And with the inclusion of nitro crates, body slams, and slide mechanic, 2 expanded the depth of the core gameplay a little bit. But 1 had a greater challenge level and larger level theme diversity so there's that. Both 1 & 2 were better than 3 imo.

It's mainly just the return of Labyrinth Zone in the final Act that kicks my teeth in. The rest of Sonic 1 isn't too bad. Mega Man 1 was certainly tougher.
