I'm having such a great time going through the Saturn's library. What have you guys been playing? Checked out any of the recent translations that have been dropping like leaves in autumn lately?
>>
Been 'plating firing up the Saturn and checking out some JP-only kino, but I am probably going to play PDS again sometime soon. What are the best party games for Saturn?

Actually playing legend of oasis

It's my emulator or the sound in this game have issue?
>>
I feel like I've never spent a lot of time on any one Saturn game (aside from Sonic Jam, I guess, but that's obviously not down to its value as something specific to the Saturn). The system just doesn't seem to have any games in genres I enjoy that also lend themselves to being tentpoles I can put days of my life into. Street Fighter Collection, I suppose, but that's just a fighting game. The ceiling of what there is to discover is hit pretty fast and any time you spend playing after that point is just to see how well you can do.

Are you using RA? disable runahead, it tends to cause issues with Saturn emulation if you don't have a beefy computer

Didn't want to make a new thread for this question, picking up a Saturn with a 3d controller tomorrow for $140. All the games the guy is giving me with it are junk and I'm just gonna flip them back on eBay for whatever I can get but I want to pirate games. Is burning them my only option?
>>
Which Saturn model has the most sovl? I like the JP Grey and Victor V ones and put my vote toward those.
>>
>>11989643
Legend of Oasis uses a lot of FM sound effects that sound like something out of a broken Genesis emulator. It also has very subtle eerie music that almost never plays.

See the problem isn't that Saturn emulation is junk, it's that most Saturn games are junk and people have a hard time believing the games were this bad.

I've started playing Grandia and I'm loving it. The world is beautiful and full of soul and I never get tired of talking to every NPC to see what they got to say even though I usually do in most RPGs. The combat is very dynamic too and the game system allows to customize (though so far I've been going with doing a bit of everything but I feel like I should start to specialize at a single weapon per character soon), combat isn't hard but I've reached a point where you can get your shit pushed in if you don't play well and are not careful, I tried grinding against some self replicating red slimes and I ended up getting Feena killed.

I've been playing the English translation of the first Sakura Taisen. It's very well done and the game itself has been a lot of fun. I just got a physical copy of the special edition so I can play with a mouse and use the mousepad it comes with (fwi I'm pursuing Sakura, which is basically taste but she's cute so idgaf).

Considering this is the first strategy RPG I've ever played, they're alright. I'm at Chapter 7 of 10, and it's never taken me more than 2 tries to get past a battle. As long as you put even some level of thought into which mech you want where and don't just throw everyone into the fray at once, they won't cause you much trouble. Keeping your team rizzed up also helps because it buffs your stats. Admittedly though, battles can take a long ass time since you move on a grid, and you have to watch every move you and the enemy make in real time. You can hold the action button (or press the middle button on the mouse) to make them move faster, but it still means that if you do have to redo a fight, it can take a while.

>And what's your favorite RPG on the Saturn

I haven't played many but I don't think anything can surpass Shining the Holy Ark for me. It's basically Dragon Quest gameplay but in a first person dungeon crawler (with an automap), the combat is engaging and can be challenging (for a 5th gen JRPG), great art and music, some fun puzzles to solve in the dungeons, and a story which has a second level of reading I wasn't expecting

3D controllers are expensive, so that's not a bad deal if everything still works. You can play burnt CD-Rs with a "4-in-1 Cart" or Action Replay flashed with Pseudo Saturn Kai. Or you can use some kind of ODE to skip the drive and load games from MicroSD.

Saroo is a cart based ODE that goes in the top slot ala a flash cart. Running games this way is somewhat difficult, so compatibility without the firmware patching your games is virtually non-existant. With the built-in patching system, compatibility is about 80% of the Saturn library.

Fenrir Duo/Fenrir Lite are more traditional ODEs that completely replace the disk drive. While this sounds difficult, it really isn't, as the Sega Saturn disk drive is not screwed down but instead pressure mounted on 4 posts. There used to be multiple models for different Saturns, but the current model supports both pin layouts. Pretty much the easiest hardware mod you'll ever install. Used to be expensive, is currently cheap due to being cloned. Supposedly a new version will make it obsolete soon.
Some guys on AliExpress sell Fenrir Duo clones that work as long as you don't try to update them. They also sell something called a Fenrir Pro that gives you a physical switch on the CD Drive bypass instead of removing it entirely. It looks pretty cool, but I don't know if anyone from here has actually tried it, and the install can be complicated on some Saturn models.

Fenrir and all its clones have 100% compatibility minus a few niche software programs that require hotswapping disks, all the multidisk GAMES work fine. There are a few other ODEs and Pseudo Saturn carts, like Satiator, Phoebe, Rhea, and MODE, but they're all either too expensive or never on sale for people to recommend them most of the time.

based, but I recommend a turbo controller for this game
>>
My top 5 Saturn games, in order:
1. Taromaru
2. Magical Knight Rayearth
3. Panzer Dragoon Saga
4. Elevator Action Returns
5. Willy Wombat
Honorable mentions:
DragonForce (but the flee mechanic is gay)
Shinobi Legions (actually pretty fun but movement can be a bit stiff and some sections of the game are a bit bullshit... Fuck that Minecraft level)

I'm wondering where Legend of Oasis, Dynamite Cop 2 and Die Hard Arcade fit into the above list. I haven't played them yet.

Describe how to play this. I dont know it plays awful.
>>
>>11994403
You charge your attack by holding a button, or you rapid fire to fire off shots. A reticle homes in on an enemy close to you (can be a bit temperamental) and you can change enemies selected by pressing L or R. Once locked on to an enemy, it won't change unless you move out of its range or it moves out of your range. You can move around the screen while attacking and charging attacks. Charged attacks chain from one enemy to the next and they do more damage.

It's very fun. Extremely soulful.
>>
>>11993986
I thought DragonForce was severely overrated. The game's so simple and slow once you learn how to play (which takes a few minutes because there's no tutorial. Maybe the manual explains it?)

I haven't played Guardian Heroes, but I'm looking forward to it. Same with Saturn Bomberman, but I've played Bomberman before and they're probably mostly the same.

Nights is pretty good. I get why people enjoy it, but it's not my cuppa. I definitely rank it below the other 5. And actually, I put Deep Fear as my #5, I forgot about that
>>
>>11994458
Yeah I have two big problems with it:
1. The gameplay is very slow
2. The final part of the game requires you to have all heroes at a strong level, and if you haven't been levelling all of them, because who gives a shit? Then you're fucked and have to grind levels for a while. V annoying.
>>
>>11994475
I'd rather play Mr. Bones or bug too! than nights. Where's Wiley wombat or whatever it's called? Isn't that supposed to be some "hidden gem" or someshit.
>>

The single player is pretty fun. I had to restart twice because of getting a game over later on in the game at which point continuing without upgrades felt hopeless, but once I got the hang of it I easily beat the game after that. The final boss is pretty simple once you realize you should stay behind his back at the top of the screen
>>
>>11994753
Mr Bones and Bug! Too look like absolute shit. This seems like a tryhard hot take, but I can't judge too hard since I haven't actually played them
