In my sonic 3 on hydrocity first room there is a count down from 5 and then i die instantly. What am i supposed to do

Pause the game. This will stop the countdown.
You're supposed to alternate up and down presses on the D-pad. The game signals it to the player by having the bubbles float up and having Sonic sink down to hell when he dies.
