King's Field, and pre-Miyazaki Fromsoft more boradly, was at the very least moderately successful in Japan.

Why did FromSoftware start making "RPGs" anyway, they don't seem to have any background in them or like them very much? Is it just the whole Japanese thing of liking Western labels?
