Fucking beat this game thanks to your tips, guys, I'm that anon who got filter'd by the ice cave. The final dungeon was a literal nightmare and way worse than anything from the first game but I think one of my stats allowed me to run away from 95% of random encounters there, otherwise it feels fucking impossible. I've heard most people say that this game is supposed to be easier than the first one but holy shit I disagree, those dungeons and also the enemies during the last 1/3 of the game who can wipe out your party easily if you are unlucky make it way, WAY harder than the first one. Chaos Shrine is a fucking joke compared to like half of the dungeons in 2. This shit is the reason I can't put it above FF1 but everything else about it from its story to unique mechanics is better in my opinion. Also I think I killed the final boss in 3 or 4 turns, Berserk + Blood Sword owns
>a pack of 5-8 enemies with each being able to inflict shit like confuse, paralyze, stone, etc>cast Berserk on your fighter, then he gets afflicted by confuse and starts wiping out your entire party>get turned to stone because even if you have a fucking ribbon some enemies can do this with physical attacks which ribbon doesn't help against>5 floors into the dungeon with random encounters every couple steps and something like that happens? Well that's too bad, time to reset bro, and you know you can always grind that Heal/Esuna spell for hours so that you don't have to worry if you run out of needles and other items! And you WILL run out because 2/3 of your inventory are key items that you don't need but can't get rid of because fuck youThat slow 'animation' when each of the 5+ enemies casts an AOE spell and you just helplessly watch your party getting raped, they did this on purpose. I don't know how people play the original version without maps because it's practically unbeatable without them unless you want to spend hours making your own map for a single dungeon, warping out every time you are low on MP and items. And with this game's encounter rates I just can't imagine doing this, let alone thinking it's fun. I've also seen people claim that it's easier and less grindy than 1 but I don't know what they're smoking, FF2 is balls to the wall hard, at least the Famicom version. It's harder and way longer than DQ2 and PS2 definitely, even if you use maps for every dungeon
>>11993252>I don't know how people play the original version without maps because it's practically unbeatable without themyou shoudnt need a map for this game its all fairly linear
>>11992798If you leveled shields you won't be hit by anything and the final dungeon AND boss are mostly a joke. You just gotta roll the dice and hope you don't get ambushed + instadeathed.
>>11993295>You just gotta roll the dice and hope you don't get ambushed + instadeathed. From what I understand evasion is so overpowered in this game that if you have high agility and evasion% it's pretty much guaranteed you'll never get ambushed and can run away from every battle except some encounters in Pandemonium, I've never managed to get away from Lamias and obviously Dragons, probably because the game treats them as bosses even though they are normal encounters during the endgame. But I also realised that my characters with 99% evasion still got hit for some reason
>>11992798The good news is that every FF game after it is much better
What's the consensus on this game?
>>11994750Well most people think the ideas are cool but the execution is bad so I guess this is the general consensus. The funniest thing about all this is that once you understand how the game works you can kinda have fun BUT then during the second half of the game you get hit with absolutely terrible dungeon layouts and straight up unfair enemy design, I guess this comes from tabletop RPGs but so much of this game just depends on luck. For example there is a desert near the colosseum, if you're unlucky you can encounter a pack of rays who can just stunlock your party. I'm not joking when I say this, like half of the encounters during the later dungeons can feel like fucking Warmech, especially if you didn't level up all the necessary spells. To make things worse they also gave virtually ALL of those enemies over 1k HP and for your reference the final boss has 10k. Like why? Why do this? Oh and also the vast majority of them towards the end are immune to your elemental spells that you've been leveling up to 7-8, how do you even kill those enemies if you haven't been leveling Berserk up? Fuck if I know
>>11992798I like the atmosphere so much, that I just play it with cheats.
>>11993336Evasion levels are important. If you have evasion 1-99% you are just going to avoid one "hit" of an attack. If you are able to level up evade to 10-99% you are going to avoid most attacks. Evade levels are randomly distributed by getting hit while you have a high agi stat iirc so it is not really something you can grind
