Final Fantasy is all about the spectacle and is more style over substance. With this in mind, for my money they always put the most effort into the first game of each console generation and those are the games that end up being the best.
1, 4, 7, and 10 are the GOATs.

The ones you happen to like. Every one of them is rich with beauty and value, and every one of them is inherently crippled by its membership in what might be the most deeply, severely flawed of all popular video game genres. So there is much to love and much to hate. Every mainline game in the series is different enough from the others to stand on its own, so you can't easily judge one of them by how much you liked another. Just treat them as completely unrelated JRPGs and judge them case by case. Nobody ever agrees on how this series' games should be ranked.

I think 5 is better because I like the cast more and the story is fun. Though for all the hype and jacking off it gets, I think the cross classing in 5 is extremely limited and overhyped.

Never understood this. 5 was the first game with a death that actually felt meaningful + impactful plus it was really nice to see how the main cast ended up bonding with each other. The characters actually have character (even if the girls get side lined a fair bit in the middle of the story)
