I played sa2 multiple times, and Pyramid Cave does give me that little anxiety feeling when I stop to watch the background. turns out that vs mode level resembles my nightmare

I was 7 when Mario 64 came out. I could play a lot of the levels no sweat but I avoided the hallway that leads to the inner courtyard whenever the boo starts appearing in it. Nowadays I think its a silly cartoon ghost, but as a kid everything is extra scary and it affects you way stronger than at any other point in life.

I'm not a zoomer, but there are some mysterious, haunting, and ethereal areas in SM64. Granted, when you're actually playing the game, with every area filled with cartoony enemies and Mario YAHOO-ing around, it isn't scary, but I do see where they're coming from.
That secret star outside Jolly Roger Bay, where you're swimming around inside of a cube with windows which look out into the sky, is indeed pretty haunting.
