Last thread was a disaster. Guess you guys don't fancy 'Jaks huh? Let's try again!

All things you'd consider strategy! Both real time and turn-based, console and home computer, eastern and western, with and without rpg mechanics etc. etc. etc.

I've been wanting to get into Waterloo and the other Peter Turcan games, but the way you type commands feels a bit daunting. I like the concept though with only being able to see what the commander could see and orders and reports being delivered by messengers.

>Go to visit my cousins when I was young, they were all playing Command and Conquer on their PCs at the time
>Family can't afford a PC, but a few years later I get a Playstation and rent C&C for the PSX
>Absolutely hooked on it, love the idea of commanding an army instead of just playing one guy or a very small group
>You can build a base, so naturally I spend hours making cool looking designs while leaving one enemy alive
>Get Red Alert for Christmas, it even has a skirmish mode where you can use the full arsenal against an AI

>Play the games at my cousins' house on PC, realize these have tons more features mine doesn't
>Finally get a PC in 2002, buy the C&C collection only to find out it won't play on a Windows 2000 computer
>Extremely disappointed, go to the Westwood website to try and find a solution, see nothing
>But find the demo to Tiberian Sun, which is even more mindblowing than C&C
>Play the two missions over and over in it because I can't afford to buy the game yet
>Dig around in the files, find out all the mission data is just included in text (ini) files, learn how to manipulate things
>Find general.mix, which partially opens with a text editor, get the codes for all sorts of units
>Mod the tech level of the demo to unlock everything, start with cyborg commandos, have a blast before I even can afford the real game

Damn, anon that's a soulful memory. Yeah, commanding armies around is a hook for me in strategy games aswell. Since you mentioned you played it on ps1, it's a bit weird how noone really tried to make a rts game for console from the ground up, except maybe soemthing like pikmin

I think people did try later on, but by then RTS wasn't as popular anymore. Halo Wars comes to mind, as does Pikmin and things like Brutal Legend. Beyond that, there was the retooling of Wargames: Defcon One for the PSX which had you control a single tank and your allies follow you.

There's Herzog Zwei, but it's not like a typical post Dune II RTS, since you don't build the bases. Or if you go back in time even further there's Utopia for the Intellivision.
