Don't know if you care but the Shenmue 1 & 2 pc port is down 80% on steam.
Most bugs seem to be taken care of despite it being terrible at launch.

Literally nobody wants to play as a whale.
>>
>>11995382
I replayed 1 to completion and a good chunk of 2 by these means, didn't have any problem with them. 1's still great.
>>
>>11995415
So far it didn't crash on me or had any serious bug.
Some shadows look weird in some objects but I think there's mods to restore the Dreamcast version's true look.
>>
>>11995382
Any word on the Xbox versions?
>>
>>11995435
Regional prices are a mess for XBOX, you'll have better luck checking yourself on the Microsoft's website

cool, let us know when all 3 make it to the Switch.
>>
>>11995463
Would the switch be able to handle Dreamcast graphics?

That's not a whale like Shamu. That's a fish like Andre. Also, that's Deb from Napoleon Dynamite.
>>
Shenmue 1 has so much atmosphere it's insane. I know 2 is technically the better game but 1 is the game I got back to over and over
>>
Any advantage to PC versions in terms of content? Don't tell me about some upscaling and fps bullcaca.
>>
>>11995390
Psst, Anon, the Orcinus orca are not really whales, except in size; they actually belong to the dolphin family.
>>
>>11995784
FPS couldn't be touched because it messes with physics and timing calculations.
The rest is largely the same game, no retexturing except for some UI elements.
Basically they made it available to be able to launch Shenmue 3.
It has Steam achievements and that's it.

Thanks.

I just bought it on Steam right now. Thank you for bringing this to my attention.

Got to finish that movie

Oh no, what I meant was how is the game, as in is it a fine version or is there anything funky w the Xbox versions? They go on sale all the time for pretty cheap may just snag it next time.
>>
>>11995828
All dolphins are (toothed) whales
>>

Wouldn't know. I only checked for the PC version. I think it's XBOX One only though. No X/S.
>>
>>11995986
Hmm I googled and it should work on X/S through retro compatibility apparently...

Finished the first one. story is okay. Gameplay is bad, the actions are too slow, it take ages to do anything. Some camera moves and zooms during the cutscenes are ridiculous, dude thought he was Hitchcock or something. The streets of Tokyo are cold and lifeless, everything look like third world. Tomb raider on PlayStation had better graphics. They should have waited one more generation before making this game. i am not sure i will begin the second one.

It's one of the first games with this kind of ambition though
>The streets of Tokyo are cold and lifeless, everything look like third world. Tomb raider on PlayStation had better graphics.
Misremembering is a hell of a drug, the graphics are astonishing for 1999
>They should have waited one more generation before making this game.
This game was originally planed for Saturn, kek
>i am not sure i will begin the second one.
Fair decision if you really didn't like the gameplay
>>
>>11995382
And it's still a bad deal because the game remains $0 elsewhere.
>>
>>11997768
Not my problem.
I just saw a game I didn't really play comfortably a few years ago at it's lowest price and wanted to share.

that shit looks exactly the same as the first. is it really a new game? or some kind of an addon/extension?
>>
>>11997827
I think they were basically developed after an initial 2 part plan. That would explian the autistic savestate features among the two games.
>>
>>11997753

all a remaster ever has to be for a game
>>
>>11997827
it was one or two generations ahead of consoles when it came out
>>
>>11995382
Didn't even know these remasters had bugs. Is it even worth getting a Playstation port?
>>
>>11995382
Remasters? Ports? No thanks. We play games the way they were meant to be played. Dreamcast or bust. No hardware? Then you’re not a retro gamer.

I bought both these games off psn for $5 because I figured what the hell, that's less than a mocha. But then III came out and everyone fucking hated and instead of ending the story like people thought it might it just teased another sequel we will clearly never get. So now I'm kind of wondering if it's even worth bothering because if I end up liking the games it's still just going to go nowhere in the end. Are they worth playing despite the story being unresolved?
>>
>>11998184
>not playing in 4k the way God intended
>>
>>11998184
>Remasters? Ports? No thanks. We play games the way they were meant to be played. Dreamcast or bust. No hardware? Then you’re not a retro gamer.
I'm pretty sure the Dreamcast wasn't meant to be a failure but it was.
The way things were meant to be doesn't seem to apply for reality.
I'm happy SEGA was able to port it anywhere else considering how messy they are with preserving source code for their old intellectual properties.
The hardware becomes scarce and gatekeeping the first entries for an unfinished saga is retarded.
If a final Shenmue chapter is to be released any exposure should be welcome.
As for being a "real retro gamer" you can shove your certified forklift operator tier badge up your 40 or 50something years old ass.
>>
>>11995382
Have they been censored or edited in any way or are they pure ports of the Dreamcast games?
>>
>>11998357
The Shenmue autists meet at "Shenmue Dojo" and they seem to be ok with this port.

It took me nearly 25 years to finish the first Shenmue. I got it back in the mists of time when it came out on deamcast. I finished the first one on PC this year. Good port.
The issue is it’s not really a game, it’s more of a VN style experience with walking and some action sequences. Some people love it but it’s incredibly boring. So boring I would turn it off for years at a time.
I don’t expect to ever finish the sequel. It’s just a horrendous time sink.
It’s an interesting historical piece but I agree with >>11997753 overall.
>>
I am on Beverly Hills Warf of Shenmue 2 fame, going to confront Ren of Heavens, and eating spicy ramen. It's still a good game, if not a little archaic. If anyone is second guessing trying them, I can vouch for it, give it a go.
>>
>>11995382

i know not retro but why would i play this over ryu ga gotoku
>>
>>11998357
I believe the only censorship was removing a Union Jack flag from a building in Hong Kong.

>>11998491
The games aren't very similar, that's like asking 'why would you play Mario Kart over Gran Turismo?'
>>
>>11998491
>why would i play this over ryu ga gotoku
Yakuza fixed everything that makes Shenmue a chore simulator but Shenmue has a certain charm as arguably the first game of it's class.
I only played Yakuza 1 and 2 on PS2 though. Maybe later installments have nothing similar to Shenmue.
>>
Cannot stand shenmue 2. Absolute downgrade and clear as day rushed out shit to meet a deadline.

Shenmue 1 - walk into a store and can pick up and examine every object.
Shenmue 2 - cant do this at all.

Shenmue 1 - Days actually mean something. You can have meetings or phone calls that only happen once through play through. Certain events only happen near christmas and you can easily miss them.
Shenmue 2 - none of this happens.

Half of shenmue 2 was supposed to be in shenmue 1 as well. The entire boat section is just gone completely and Ryu just magically knows Chinese once he steps off it.
Lots of stuff was cut because of time deadlines but for some odd reason we still have the entire of disk 3 walking around a shitty forest doing retarded quick time event after quick time event doing the most boring shit imaginable.

Then we have shenmue 3.........

I'd argue even 1 and 2 are worlds apart from Shenmue. What do you think is similar about the games apart from the overworld?

>>11998605
I like them both for different reasons. I don't think Shenmue 2 was rushed so much as it tried to do something different. Shenmue 1 was all about focusing on a smaller more detailed world, Shenmue was more about exploring and opening up the world to be a bit larger but at the trade-off of detail.
Even in Shenmue 2 there are some nice touches like visiting the electronics stores and talking to vendors there. There's really no story quest that brings you to this area but its fully realised and detailed and a great way to make the world feel real.
It is quite different to having every NPC being unique, lots of interactive items etc, so I definitely get why people have a strong favourite of either 1 or 2.

>>11998462
I think the problems of the game were always problems rather than being archaic. It just tries (and succeeds) in being quite different to what most would expect from a game like this.
I definitely tell people to give it a shot, I think it's unique even 25 years later. It's not for everyone, but it's definitely worth trying to see for yourself.
>>
>>11998491
Two gaems in one can't be the answer?
>>
>>11999770
I mean one issue is introduced in the remaster I think, being able to save anywhere? that gives you the tools to save scum the gambling mini games, which removes the need to make money, which is probably the only way to reasonably pass time in the game. Certain events are time gated. I put the controller down the other day and left it running while I played a different game..
>>
>>11999807
Am I retarded or it isn't really easy to load as it is to save in the port?
I have been working on the harbour and avoiding the warehouse 17 mad angels encounter and spending time on the cafeteria buying capsules... I also collected all the forklifts you can win on the races (You got to finish once on each position to get them all)
>>
>>11999823
There's zero load time in the remaster, so I quit to the menu and load back in within 3 seconds. What forklift thing are you taling about?
>>
>>12000212
>What forklift thing are you taling about?
There's 5 different forklift toys you can get after finishing a forklift race, if you finish 1st you win forklift #1, 2nd you get #2 and so on...
>>
>>12000212
>I quit to the menu and load back in within 3 seconds.
I'll try it, I thought it forced you to skip some logo screens...
>>
>>11999807
Ahh yeah, from memory you had to save and quit or save in the bedroom in the original Shenmue (and maybe Shenmue II as well)
I can see that throwing the flow of the game out for sure.
