What good /vr/ nonlinear platformers that aren't Castlevania or Metroid exist? I'm trying to beat Blaster Master right now. Rygar was fun but very short. Would Pitfall count?
>>
Wonder Boy III. Apparently the Megadrive version is the best.

Check out Sonic the Hedgehog.

Konami Wai Wai World.

Is a crocodile a platform? No, they are obviously crocodiles. Pitfall is an early example of a hop 'n drop. Where you hop, then you drop, then you hop again.

Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, obviously. You also got impossible mission, below the root, maybe give mountain king on the 5200 a play.

Obviously not a platformer

It is a platformer, though. Retard

>Faxanadu is a spin-off or side-story of Xanadu, which is the second installment of Falcom's long-running RPG series, Dragon Slayer. The title Faxanadu is a portmanteau formed from the names Famicom and Xanadu.

>The game uses side-scrolling and platforming gameplay, while employing role-playing elements with an expansive story and medieval setting.
>>
>>11996996
Faxanadu is a great game but it's fairly linear
>>
>>11996839
Ain't that a shooter?
>>

The whole series is a mess. You're talking about Wonder Boy 3 Monster Lair, a platformer + shmup for the arcades. Other anon is talking about the different game Wonder Boy 3 Dragon's Trap, which is a metroidvania on the Master System and a sequel to Wonder Boy in Monster Land. It was followed by Monster World, and then the 6th game in the series, Monster World 4. Adventure Island is somehow related, alongside Monica's Gang.

I don't even think Blaster Master is really non-linear, is it? You have to do the levels in a certain order and any deviation from that order is just a waste of time. Right? I might be misremembering though.

Most worlds in Blaster Master can be explored however you want with branching paths and have dungeons you can do in any order or even not at all. Fanaxadu doesn't have any of that.
>>
>>11996839
wonderboy 3 is sms only
>>
>>11996834
Zelda 2 counts
>>
Maze of Galious has a similar level of nonlinearity in that you have to do each level in order, but they're scattered around a huge overworld which can be explored in full immediately.
>>
>>11996834
It took me 3 years to beat Blaster Master on original nes console.
>>
>>11998476
nah it's pretty linear
>>
>>11998358
It's the same thing in Faxanadu you mongaloid, there are different paths you can go but you quickly get locked out because you're missing something.

Same shit as Blaster Master where you need an upgrade or you get locked out of an area.

Both allow you to backtrack and go to different areas at once but eventually there is only one path to take because you need an item to progress.
>>
>>11996834
Ghosts N Goblins Arcade or SNES if you want an easier entry.
>>
>>11999762
Fuck wrong thread
>>
>>11997418
It's a bit nonlinear. You get choices here and there about which branch to explore, there are unlockable paths and backtracking, and there are dead ends. More than enough to fit the term I think. You may not get to rearrange your MAJOR quests yeah, but you can rearrange lots of smaller details in the layout of your path.
>>
>>11999202
It's good enough for the thread.
>>
>>11996834
I will continue promoting Ghoul School. Try it with a generous spirit and a tolerance for awkward American developers' failure to polish their work, and you will find it to be good
>>
I guess Mega Man games count, but maybe nonlinearity in the form of stage selection menus isn't in the spirit of what OP wanted.
>>
>>11999902

OP asked for good games though... the goodness of that one will vary wildly according to the tastes and tolerances of the player. Well, it's weird enough to be worth trying if nothing else
