Still the best argument to date on videogames as an art form
>>11996849Uhh, no. Ffvi/vii better represent artistic endeavors in gaming. Crash is a gamey game, which is fine. It's also art, but not a great point for arguing that "videogames are art". That's two different conversations. Videogames are a product of artists working together with programmers, so by definition, they are art in the technical sense. Then there is the "are videogames art?" Question, which is actually "can videogames be considered high art?" And yes videogames can be considered high art. I would consider frontier elite 2 high art, in the sense that, it's written at a "black magic" level. It's unique and singular in it's approach to galaxy simulation, using a custom 3d bezier curve render. That's why it's so distinct and has its own essence and charm. It's not only high art by standards of programming such things, but the art that is created from the programming is simple, not quite perfect, but still portrays the scope and size in a believable manner. As for ffvii/ffvii, id say they teeter on high art. Where the music and backgrounds (especially in vii) give life to the world you're exploring, but the story isn't quite as much of a masterpiece as written stories can be. It's still a great story as far as RPGs go.
>>11996885So the gameplay part can never be art, according to you? Than at least bite the bullet, and say: "no, video GAMES can never be art, becaue games are not art, but the pieces thorugh which you interact with the game can be art. Thus chess is not art, but a chessboard can be." But I would disagree with such a statement: I haven't really fully formed my opinion on the topic yet, but I don't see how a game can't be art, if a piece of music can.
>>11996885Just be quiet and face the wall.
all games are art; there's no argument to be had, never was one
A bunch of hugolikes are art? ok
>>11996926I never said the gameplay can't be art. It's a synergy of "game" and "art" in that aspect. Gameplay is interesting as I can equate it to learning an instrument and how you suck at playing when you're starting out, just like videogames. A great example en masse would be when the dual analog control scheme first started to get used. Alien on PS1 got reviews of people not liking or not being used to the dual analog movement + camera control scheme. I remember first using it on PS3, I don't think I remember many PS2 games using it. I sucked at using dual analog, I was used to having the shoulder buttons control the camera like armored core games. Though, you get used to it and in a way mastering a control scheme in itself is an art form. It's actually crazy to breakdown. You're manipulating a piece of art that reacts to your manipulation. The orchestration involved in the pageantry you're participating in is complex but presented in a tangible form. Videogames are nearly every aspect of art, packed into a parcel. The quality of which is dependent on those who created it.
>>11996885Final Fantasy VII is such a fucking shitty story no one over the age of 13 could actually take it seriously.
>>11997093Who takes any jrpg studies seriously? Though, ffvii had a solid story, until it got fucked with. Just sticking to whats in game, the story is a fun sci Fi fantasy romp.

>>11996849no thanks to warped
>>11997047>t. sega fanatic
>>11997123millions take jrpg stories seriously. my favorite ones tend to be the ones with the most simple stories plots (like smt) so the shitty writers don't think they're actually telling some grand narrative here
