Don’t talk to him, asshole.

When I was in college I peeked over at my classmate's laptop screen and saw an icon for visuallboy advance. I asked about it and she said it was for playing Mother 3.
That was the only time I've ever heard anyone mention it irl.

She sounds based

Wasnt a she then.

Mother 3 was always hated. Nobody ever liked it! Fucking undertale clone
>>

The game looked lame to me so I didn't play it, but it seemed like something my mom would enjoy so I loaded it onto a flash cart and let her play it. She ended up really liking it and played to the end.

Your mom has better taste in video games than you do.

revolutionary, it was like playing a generic pixels indie slop about Le depression and capitalism but back before it became a trend during the 10's
>>
Strange, it was very different from the first two games but it retained the style of the franchise. I really liked it, nice graphics and excellent music, the castle episode is by far my favourite and I fapped really hard to the redhead tomboy back in the day.

Still, mother 3 doesn't use cheap tricks to manipulate your emotions and the critic of capitalism comes from a conservative point of view instead of a leftist point of view.

I dunno but playing it after finishing EB felt like shit until chapter 4
>>
>>11997289
I started playing it after reading the Kotaku article, I didn't like it enough at the time to keep going.
>>
>>11997289
Same as it is now I would think: If you like JRPGs then it's fun and good; if you dislike them or happen to be a hypersensitive contrarian then it's annoying and bad.
>>
It was hype as fuck. It was around the same time that smash brawl was doing all of those new character teasers and everyone was excited for the sequel to melee. Throughout development, the mother 3 translation drip fed all kinds of neat updates, and it was really exciting when it finally came out.

Do I need to remind you that Mother 3 was based on Agota Kristof's novel "The Notebook" about twin brothers Lucas and Claus surviving a communist occupation?
>>
>>11999897
Mother 3, Cave Story, and Brawl. 2008 /v/ was something else.
>>
>>12000252
Uh, no, the majority story is set in Hungary during WWII. I’m not trying to make political commentary, but that’s unambiguously not what the story is about.

If you've read the book(s), you know it's never explicitly specified where or when is the story happening, other than being very european, and meant to be contemporary to the author's youth, possibly.
If we can go by anything, Agota's own life story may indicate something
>At the age of 21 she had to leave her country when the Hungarian anti-communist revolution was suppressed by the Soviet military. She, her husband (who used to be her history teacher at school) and their 4-month-old daughter escaped to Neuchâtel in Switzerland.

The point is, Itoi said he was only influenced by the relationship between Claus and Lucas in the book and specifically cited the first novel, which doesn’t cover any of the post-war stuff.
>>
Ive never been more let down by a sequel in my life. everything thats great about earthbound is completely missing in mother 3. cool setting, unique music, great humor, trippy atmosphere, inspiring and non pretentious story, surreal set pieces. its all gone in favor of something I cant even describe without using the word reddit. either itoi wasnt the real brains behind EB or he became a washed, brainless boomer.

This so much
>>

Yeah, the war stuff and occupation part was on the first novel.
I get that the introduction of money on the game and the dystopian multicultural hellhole that's New Pork City can be seen as a jab at cpaitalism (and there's nothing wrong with that), but pigmask army and their big brother shit has some communism undertones as well.
At the end of the day, Itoi is Japanese and he doesn't process cultural war the same way we westerners do, but Mother 3 is a story of a trad cowboy family getting destroyed by a spoiled modern fat kid with time-traveling powers (this part influenced by the character Rumfoord from The Sirens of Titan, another influence on the Mother games)
