What's the go-to way of emulating Win3.1 games? I have problems installing one that has 4 install discs I need to mount.

Could this BE any more of a Windows thread
>>
>>11997574
86box will be the most accurate method. I personally like to use Dosbox-Staging for the convenience. I can make shortcuts to a game that will boot straight into it and make Dosbox close itself when I exit the game, so it's very seamless. Here's how to install it:
https://github.com/dosbox-staging/dosbox-staging/wiki/Windows-3.1x
>>
>>11997851
Dosbox closing itself is one of the reasons I'm making this thread because I can't figure how to "insert"/mount disc 2 when running a setup
>>
>>11997902
And by this I mean I'm running window 3.1 and I have to install the game off a floppy disc but I can't since it requires 4 discs
>>
>>11997902
>>11997908
You can mount all four disks at once by listing them under the autoexec section of the dosbox conf file, and switch between them on the fly using Ctrl+F4, which will cycle through in order and loop back to the first
Not sure why Dosbox is closing itself unless you specifically configured it to do so
>>
>>11997851
tell me how so i can do this to shadow of the horned rat because screw GoG's release til they make the game run in high res

>What's the go-to way of emulating Win3.1 games?
Install WineVDM.
>>
>>11998014
Thanks I'll give it a shot
>Not sure why Dosbox is closing itself unless you specifically configured it to do so
I'm using the RPGcodex one
>>
>>11997574
Look and lurk on this board. There's an artist with a really good Windows 3.1 setup for 86Box.

Just use his image for starters.
>>
>>11998079
For some reason when loading dos games on 86box, DOS is slow as fuck.
>>
>>11998090
Change the cycle count using this as a rough guide for the type of CPU that the game would be played on around release:
https://dosbox-x.com/wiki/Guide%3ACPU-settings-in-DOSBox%E2%80%90X#_cycles
>>
>>11998090
>>11998093
Actually scratch that, I completely misread your post at a glance and thought you were the guy trying to get things working with dosbox. I'll leave it up in case someone else needs the info.
>>
>>11998074
Ah, if you can't get things working with the RPGCodex one, I would recommend just grabbing the latest Dosbox-staging version and using that guide posted earlier in the thread
>>
>>11998095
i am also asking >>11998039
i want to test it out loading dos games on 86box with windows installed(got a 98se with voodoo3 and awe32 working + SCVA) as future proof for some games like apache longbow and firestorm thunderhawk 2
>>
>>11998039
Tell you how to run the game in 86box, or with Dosbox-Staging?
>>
>>11998114
Staging because 86box vulkan shaders arent working yet and staging's CRT shader is just perfect, plus i already have a set up 3.1 install off the oldgames version https://www.oldgames.sk/en/game/windows-31/downloads/
>>
>>11998124
Unfortunately, that download no longer seems to work, so I couldn't tell you what their folder structure looks like. Can you post a screenshot? I'd be looking for a folder/directory where the system folders/files like WINDOWS, DRIVERS, SOFTWARE etc are

Use exowin.

Dosbox pure on Retroarch

>4 install discs
what game? that seems way too excessive for a win 3.1 game.
>>
>>11998932
probably floppy disks, zoomer
>>
>>11998940
Most of the games were on cd's you retarded zoomie.
>>
>>11998942
maybe by 1995, but not on Win 3.1
>>
>>11998947
Nope, win3.x had majority cd games. What do you think myst came on
Floppies?
Check out most game sizes, those ain't floppies.

Ffaggot.
>>
>>11999046
Holy retard. Dos and other platforms games had cd's you absolute retard. Try actually filtering it for platforms using your link:
cd:567
floppy:213
Just stop already zoomie and admit you were wrong. And don't even try to weasel out that " well it doesn't account for most of the games when filtered !!!!".
>>
What the hell
>>
Just get a 486 and install windows 3.1 on top of dos 6.22
>>
>>11999070
>What the hell

Running win 3.1 on my old trusty 386 was glorious. Of course it wasn't really fast and the painting program was the main event. I wish it had 256 colours.
>>
>>11998909
>exobloat
nah son.
>>
>>11999094
One of these days you are gonna learn to download individual files from torrents.
>>
>>11999065
I know there were CDs retard, but floppies were dominant at least until the Windows 95 era. Your filters are too convoluted, a sample of 500 games across five years is meaningless. If you just add DOS and Windows 16-bit to the platform filter to my original links you'll still get more Floppy games than CDROM games.
>>
>>11999110
>but floppies were dominant at least until the Windows 95 era
Not for win 3.x which was the entire point.
>Your filters are too convoluted, a sample of 500 games across five years is meaningless
What did i say?
"And don't even try to weasel out that " well it doesn't account for most of the games when filtered !!!!".
>if you just add DOS
Why would i add a different platform to the one we were arguing about?
Zoomie, this was not about dos, this was about specifically about win3.x
>>
>>11998932
multiple discs were actually a big selling point back then, which meant the game had a large amount of "content". this "game" was in 3 cds and notice how they advertise their game with huge numbers:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xaNCAUtwxKQ
also iirc phantasmagoria came with a whooping 7 (seven) cds.
>>
>>11997574
x86box is the only real answer
>>
>>11999148
86box stutters running dos games
>>
>>11999128
We're arguing about an era retard. Most CDROM games required Win 3.1x so of course if you filter by OS, you'll get a biased selection.
>>
>>11999179
>We're arguing about an era retard
You said this:
>maybe by 1995, but not on Win 3.1
and your original reply was for the win3.x post.
Era my ass.You are just weaseling out like the usual zoomie instead of admitting you were wrong.
>Most CDROM games required Win 3.1
So ripper, myst, wing commander and other cd based games could not be installed in dos?
In fact, most cd-rom based games were made for dos and not for win 3.x.
>>
>>11999151
99 % of dos games will stutter if you don't have a monitor that supports 70hz.
>>
>>11997574
Just use 32bit windows XP in any VM and set the resolution and color depth to 640x480 and 256 color.
All the benefits of a much more stable setup then any Win9x/Win3.x setup, with the benefits of it still running 99.9% of Win3.x era software without issue.
>>
>>11999148
I love 86box, but it kinda sucks at the same time due to it having really high input latency, especially for mouse inputs. Playing games in VMware Workstation feels better even.
>>
>>11999251
It used to, but not anymore on the latest version so long as you set it up right, though you probably need a VRR monitor to get the best out of it. On Windows 98, with the mouse polling set to 200 Hz through ps2rate and the refresh rate set to 120 Hz, it's VERY close to as responsive as my host. You need to use the GLCore backend, though, as Vulkan is still laggy.
>>
>>11999239
This
If you're serious about emulation these days you should have a variable high refresh rate monitor
>>
>>11999261
I've played on the newer versions. Its vastly improved, I will give it that, but its still bad. Its extremely noticeable if you've got real hardware to compare with, or playing a twitchy game like a FPS.
That said, a lot of the DOS games I enjoy are RPGs that don't really matter in this regard, I use 86box all the time for those.
>>
>>11999261
>ps2rate
For some reason ps2rate made my mouse go apeshit when I installed Voodoo 3 drivers, and another Anon reported the same exact problem
Another anon suggested Logitech MouseWare, which also lets you set your mouse report rate to 200 and it works perfectly
>>
>>11999264
Have you increased your mouse refresh rate? I think it defaults to 40hz which is why it feels laggy
>>
>>11999264
Is that with the CPU frame size set to smaller frames and VSync off?
>>
>>11999268
I'd use that, but unfortunately it only goes up to 120 Hz if you set it to use a wheel mouse for some reason. I'm guessing it's a driver thing? Perhaps it can be forced to 200Hz somehow.
>>
>>11999245
I wish I could but we're talking about obscure abandonware created by my father

I'll give the full instructions for setup, just follow these steps and it should work
>from that archive.org link, grab the S3_Trio64V+_Binary-775-785__Win_3.1_English_v._1.70.04_-_PROD.zip SB16W3X.ZIP and Windows 3.11.iso files
>Create a folder named Win311
>Inside of that folder, create three new folders- name them HDD, CD, and FLOPPY
>Inside of the HDD folder, create a folder named DRIVERS
>Inside of the DRIVERS folder, create a folder named S3 and place the driver files from S3_Trio64V+_Binary-775-785__Win_3.1_English_v._1.70.04_-_PROD.zip inside of there
>Also inside of the DRIVERS folder, create a folder named SB16 and place the files from SB16W3X.ZIP in there
>Take the Windows 3.11.iso and place it in that CD folder you created earlier
>Grab the latest release of Dosbox-Staging
>Extract it and rename the dosbox-staging-v0.82.2 folder to DOSBOX
>Move the DOSBOX folder into the Win311 folder
>Run Dosbox-Staging at least once to generate a .conf file
>Grab the dosbox-staging.conf file from your Appdata\Local directory (assuming you're on Windows)
>place it into the DOSBOX folder
>Open that .conf file in a text editor
>Scroll to the bottom and add the following lines under the [autoexec] section:
@echo off
mount C "..\HDD"
imgmount D "..\CD\Windows 3.11.iso" -t iso
c:
>Save the .conf file, run dosbox-staging and type the following:
D: (enter)
Setup.exe (enter)
>Run through the setup as normal, telling it that there's no printer attached and that you don't want to install network files
(cont...)
>>

>After everything is finished, restart dosbox-staging and type the following:
cd drivers (enter)
cd sb16 (enter)
install (enter)
>Proceed through the steps, choosing the full install
>When you see the page that looks like picrel, use the arrow keys to select Microsoft Windows 3.1 Path and set it to C:\WINDOWS
>Proceed with installation
>On the next screen, change the Interrupt setting to 7, then proceed again
>At some point you'll likely get a red popup message with a few options, choose backup
>At the end, press enter to exit to DOS
>Close out of Dosbox-staging
>Back in the .conf file, under autoexec, add the following lines to the bottom (under c:):
windows\win
exit
>Save the file, then re-run dosbox. It should now boot straight into Windows 3.11
>Close out of the audio folder that pops up and double-click Windows Setup in the Main folder
>Click Options, then Change System Settings
>Change the Display from VGA to Other display (Requires disk from OEM)...
>In the box asking for directory, type C:\DRIVERS\S3
>Set the resolution that you want, then proceed and it will want to restart Windows, do so
>Back in Windows, open the Control Panel and then Drivers
>Click Add and select [MCI] CD Audio, then let it install
At this point your Windows 3.11 is set up. If you want to use floppy disks, add them to your FLOPPY folder, then edit the .conf file under autoexec to add:
mount A "..\FLOPPY\<name of file>" -t floppy
You can add multiple floppies, for example:
mount A "..\FLOPPY\<floppya.img>" "..\FLOPPY\<floppyb.img>" "..\FLOPPY\<floppyc.img>" -t floppy
Pressing Crtl+F4 will cycle through them.
To add discs, you'd place them in the CD folder and type something like:
mount D "..\CD\<name of file>" -t iso
You can do the same thing with multiple discs and cycling through them. If you have disc images that are bin+cue files, just mount the .cue file.

There's more games on Win 3.x than just sharware/entertainment pack shit, anon
>>

I was talking about that period of time, when Win 3.1 was the current OS. I wasn't talking about the mere ~500 games out of 5000 that didn't support DOS.
