I'm interested in playing this but no nothing about Mystara as a setting. Should I read the novels and old modules beforehand, or does Capcom largely ignore the actual setting?

It's the most faithful and accurate homage to a TSR setting ever developed by mortal hands. The poster for SoM always baffled me. The first game's "cover" has the four heroes from the game fighting off various enemies that you encounter in the game. Mystara's poster, on the other hand, is just two generic fantasy guys taking on a dragon. Why??? I'd almost guess that TSR insisted on using their own supplied art, but it's a real shame considering Capcom had such artistic talent to draw from.At least Nishimura, the artist for SoM, went and made a new piece for the collection
