why is capcom the best to ever do old school RPG kino?
>>
segachads win again
>>
>>11997625
this acade slop is not RPG, it's just an action game
>>
I'm interested in playing this but no nothing about Mystara as a setting. Should I read the novels and old modules beforehand, or does Capcom largely ignore the actual setting?
>>
>>11998902
You absolutely need to own the boxed set and read every novelization to get even a fraction of the copious references that the fine gents of Capcom put into this arcade game. It's the most faithful and accurate homage to a TSR setting ever developed by mortal hands. Like, you won't even know why the Thief is dressed that way or how it relates to her tragic backstory and the memento her Grandmother left her.
>>
>>11997716
What does it have over the arcade version?
>>
>>11998923
>boxed set
>every novelization
any links for that, champ?
>>
>>11999225
Not having to go to the arcade and deal with the older teens hogging the cabinets or selling drugs.

Not really. It's been a long time since I played DND or read any of the novels myself but there's not really anything in the books ore modules you need to know. A lot of the shit is pretty self explanatory.
>>
>>11999230
That would be illegal and unethical, I suggest you hunt them down in used book stores or use ebay. Otherwise you are a criminal and shouldn't be allowed to enjoy the game and its rich backstory.
>>
>>11999371
When did I ask for download links? I was expecting online stores links so I could buy the novels brand new. I don't want used shit. They don't even sell digital versions of them?
>>
>>11999398
Well, go to the Wikipedia page for the Mystara setting and start tracking down what products are available for it. Buy them all, read them, and report back.

I should read the book SoM's thief is based on at some point
>>
>>12001124
Just don't read the one the Magic User is based off of.

>mfw I received the same advice from this same anon back in 2005 and I've been reading and consuming media for the last 20 years
400 novels and 60,000 magazine, internet, and news articles later and I still haven't even begun to scratch the surface of this game's rich backstory. I'm going to come back and haunt this website if I don't get to play SoM even once before I die.

The poster for SoM always baffled me. The first game's "cover" has the four heroes from the game fighting off various enemies that you encounter in the game. Mystara's poster, on the other hand, is just two generic fantasy guys taking on a dragon. Why??? I'd almost guess that TSR insisted on using their own supplied art, but it's a real shame considering Capcom had such artistic talent to draw from.

At least Nishimura, the artist for SoM, went and made a new piece for the collection
>>
>>12001209
why? which one is that?
>>
>>11999237
Was never an issue.
CPS2 emulation has been cracked for decades.
>>
>>11997625
Capcom never made a D&D RPG, to the best of my knowledge. They made a couple really fun hack and slashers though.

I didn't know he had one. Do the other characters follow? Elf is pretty obviously a Deedlit knock off.

Because they ripped off Record of Lodoss War.
Aesthetics is everything in a game, not boring books.

It was influential. Ass always it's the singer not the song. Even Tolkien would be happy to show you were he got his ideas.

A lot of older D&D material is available as POD on drivethrurpg (I use it to collect older Basic D&D modules, or Ravenloft, Dark Sun, Planescspe and Al Quadim books).
>>
>>11997716
Tower of doom port is meh, doesn't utilize the 4m cart because it's an old port they never released. Mystara is ok but loads are awful and gameplay is still not 100% accurate.

Starting from 0:15 and onward, I can count the frames on two hands.

To this day... That Dragon's Dogma is very old-school while also being forward-thinking
>>
>>12005305
it's almost as if there's not a lot of movement in that scene.

It's almost as if good animation is dependent on things moving.
