Massively underrated console. What are your favourite games and memories with it? Besides Halo I mean. Did you read Official Xbox Magazine?
>>
>>11998706
This console was just mostly

>60fps ver of a ps2 game
>Consolized version of a PC game

I wish it had more cool exclusives but most of them were awful like Dino Crisis 3. I really tried to like DC 3 and ignored all the stories about it, but much like dmc2, it's actually fucking shit.

It does have some neat exclusives but they're too few to even think about calling this console underrated.
>>
>>11998708
These days it’s better because the the ps2 version of a game will sell for 80$ and the xbox version will be like 20
>>
>>11998715
I had one and enjoyed it but there was nothing really special about it.
The coolest thing you could do was hack it and turn it into an emulation machine that could hook up to your tv without a tv card back then. It would still play regular xbox games too. Was probably the best thing about the console because it also had a built in LAN port to transfer games and roms.
>>
>>11998706
>Massively underrated console.
I agree. I was a teenager in Australia when the Xbox released in here in 2002 and I literally didn't even know it even existed. PC and PS2 simply dominated here at the time. I think the Xbox 360 was a lot more popular here. I actually found an old Xbox circa 2017 at a local e-waste facility, probably the first time I had ever seen one in-person, and after I figured out how to soft-mod it et cetera I was blown away by some of its exclusives and what it could do, etc. I have only played anf finished Halo: Combat Evolved and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic on it (from an upgraded IDE HDD) so far, but I am planning to play Genma Onimusha next.
>>
>>11998706
>>
>>11998706
My favorite games from that era are Dark Coud 2, MGS 3, Dragon Quest 8, Final Fantasy X, Final Fantasy XII, and Pirates: The Legend of Black Kat. XBox only managed to have one of those games.

>>11998719
I remember modders trying to work on an emu to make it run PS1 and PS2 games on it, and failing.

>I remember modders trying to work on an emu to make it run PS1 and PS2 games on it, and failing.
Pcsxbox worked fine. PS2 of course never happened
>>
Dead to right is awesome

Much better than the PS2/GameCube version
>>
>>11998706
Xbox is a PC. If I want a PC, I buy a PC an actual PC and not a PC locked for gaming only (this would be dumb), unless I want to save money and just play games, but that's what Sony, Nintendo, and Sega consoles are for. Microsoft = PC. I don't want a Microsoft console because it's just a PC. If I want a PC, I buy a PC. Therefore, I don't need an Xbox.

Nice! Onimusha is great. Haven’t played the Xbox version yet, I need to. I think it has a bunch of cut content or maybe different controls idk but the game is cool if you like a more action oriented RE style game.
>>
>>11998793
>Xbox is a PC.
You got it. It's "last year's PC hardware (in a 2001 sense) bought cheap on clearance from parts suppliers, and repackaged into a console." It even runs on the Windows PC kernel that's modified for "console" use so games run like console games instead of like PC games.

Amped 2, Black, Soul Calibur 2

Did you read Official Xbox Magazine?
The UK one
>>
>>11998793
>It's a PC because erm it has PC parts
It's a box that plays video games and has some secondary functions. I put a disc in it, it plays the game, I use a controller. It's a console. Are you gonna argue the Famicom is actually a PC because it has 'computer' in the name and has a keyboard/programming accessory? Fucking retard.
>>
I was thinking about buying an Xbox for the first time since I've never played one.
After reading so much embarrassment and insufferable entitled and cringe babbling in the official magazine (first issue) I simply gave up... what the fuck is this?
See for yourself.
>>
>>11998706
Halo 2, Ninja Gaiden Black, Burnout 3, JSRF, Simpsons Hit and Run.

It is a nice console especially if you like the multiplats of that era. I just wish its hardware wasn't so flakey and there were more exclusives.

I was a Xbox guy, I bought it like everyone in the world with the Halo 2 bundle. My to go game was Halo 2 I played so much of it that I even started speedrunning it before discovering speedrun and infact when I discovered the speedruns of Halo 2 I noticed that I used their tactics (not everything I didn't discovered the sword dash sniper).
Anyway I have so much memories with this console too many games but I think the one that I replayed so much and was my favorite is pic related.
Other games that I played a lot with friends and especially my brother were:
-Halo 2
-Star wars battlefront 2
-The Warriors

I just bought the Aladin Chip already flashed now me and my brother are gonna put it on our xbox 1.6 and then we're golden, we're gonna do a 2000 night with old friends and playing those games we never tried or bought.
I wanna do a honorable mention of my games that I played a lot on Xbox and one of the few original games I still Own.
FABLE(OG edition no expansions or stuff)

GTA3
>>
Why does nobody ever mention Blue Dragon? Japanese exclusives are a big part of the appeal to people who never owned an Xbox back in the day. Some great games people haven't played.
>>
>>11999018
They do all the time. It just wasn't very good. Also you're dealing with nu-4chan, it's full of underages who weren't around for these eras so all they can do is "hear about it" or speculate
>>
>>11999032
>t. underage
>>
>>11999029
Okay, I fucked up. SMT 9 etc.
>>
>>11998838
I am actually surprised that they managed to have an XBOX magazine for so long in japan.
I am however not surprised that about half of those covers have DoA girls on them. Probably THE system seller over there. Also lmao on the japanized Sudeki artwork.

Xbox library suffers from not having many exclusives. Multi platforms were usually the best on it which is something, but why should I play Halo CE or Riddick on the Xbox, when I can do that on PC too - nowadays with good frame-rate and resolution? Some games had really bad ports, but you'd have to look that up before you play.
Started to play Scarface on it, cool game that is able to run at 720p widescreen. However, this will absolutely tank the framerate, so it's better to play in 480p. Even then 16:9 is obviously more demanding than 4:3. Still cool that we had the option in fucking 2006.
Apart from playing Halo 2 with my brother in coop, I guess Ninja Gaiden was definitly the best game I had for it back then. I also have fond memories of Crimson Skyes and DoA2:U.
>>
>>11998706
>capacitors that leak all over the board
>shit disc drives
>if the 20+yo hdd fails the console won't start and you need to raspberry pi the motherboards EEPROM to replace the hdd
>the psu prongs for the plug crack from people simply taking the plug out the system

Microsoft has always built their hardware like shit, the 360 is even worse the disc trays are locked behind keys so you can't even replace them and they still used the shit tray design over the disc eating design.
>>
>>11999051
SNES consoles also had this issue retard, minus the HDD and capacitors although I've had 2 SNES's I repaired that had bad caps
>>
>>11998706
I love the Xbox, tons of great games. Riddick is incredible, Amped 2, Bloodwake, Crimson Skies, Mech Assault are all time greats. Crimson Skies especially has incredible online. Been playing online every week these past few months, Rainbow Six 3 and Cod 2 and 3 have been highlights. I got to play so much I haven't experienced in decades like Counter-Strike on Xbox, first time experiences like Conker Live & Reloaded, Urban Chaos and Outrun 2006 online.
>>
>>11999051
You are not wrong and the "key" bullshit is bullshit alright. However I know not one person that still owns his original PS2. I know several people that had at least two - Sony was hardly any better in quality control. People tend to forgive them because PS2 were cheap enough to get new ones and the fats could be HDD modded easily, so the fucked DVD drives didn't matter that much back then.

Not retro: Same shit with 360 and PS3.
>>
>>11999054
Snes consoles had disc drives?
>>11999063
Yeah modding an Xbox is gonna be more expensive and time consuming than a ps2 if you wanna swap the hdd
>>
>>11999083
>Snes consoles had disc drives?
>ACHTUALLY
Just stfu retard. All consoles had some sort of build quality issue that didnt' stand the test of 10 years.

NES "teeth" would wear out. SNES AC ports would break, fuses would bust. Turbo Duos/PCE's has large runs of leaky caps on the entire fucking motherboard.

Stop being a fucking faggot (impossible)

>>11999063
Gamecubes are also all shitting the bed. Turns out 20+ year old electronics need some maintenance.

Some more than others retard. The xbox 360 was having RROD within a couple years of the consoles lifetimes. The OG xboxs power cables had to be recalled because the PSU was such a fire hazard. Microsoft has always built them like shit. Electrolytic caps are bound to go bad on things 20+ years old but the caps on the xbox were faulty in the consoles lifetime because some of the batches they got were so shit.

Stop being a console war faggot 20 years after its over challenge (impossible)
>>
>>11999101
Yes and most gamers don't wanna learn electronic repair. That's why this faggot can thrive.
>>

>>
>>11999113
No, it goes in the order of dolphin -> Gamecube -> Wii -> other stuff (wii u, etc)
>>
>>11999101
The only hardware issue the Gamecube has is the disc drive, like every console with a disc drive. Replace it with an ODE.
>>
>>11998706
I actually just tried installing xemu the other day and Im SHOOK how well it runs. I have a bit of a potato laptop but its perfectly playable.
>>
>>11999336
Most disc drives are fine, recap your hardware.
>>
>>11998735
PS2 and PS3 processors were weird and ahea of their time.
Kind of hard to replicate something that somehow manages to be much more efficient on multitasking despite the seemingly lower power.
>>
Otogi: Myth of Demons
To this day, I consider it a work of art and so much fun to immerse in.

Kotor I and II
While flawed, great stories. Kreia's dialogue is gold.
>>
>>11999051
none of this shit affected the console when it was relevant besides the disc drive thing.
>>
>>11999498

Good enough for a round of Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball at least.

Question: In what picture mode do you play xbox games? Most offer widescreen, but often it's the same resolution as 4:3, so the image just looks worse. Some games actually increase the resolution. I just use 4:3 mode as few households really had a widescreen TV in that generation
>>
>>11998706
it had some 720p games quite impressive for the time

They hated him because he spoke the truth. He didn't say a damn thing about the games library or anything else, just that the hardware is shit in terms of reliability, which is 100% true.

Regardless of anything else, this level of quality is unacceptable and any "b-but what about xyz" is just a cope.
>>
For me it's Breakdown
>>
>>11998875
I played this recently with the uncensored patch, it was great
>>
>>11999704
I do 4:3 480p for all games, was playing Armed and Dangerous yesterday and it's letter boxed. Some subtitles appear in the letterboxing too. Weird.
>>
>>11998719
I was mad fuckin jealous of a friend with a modded system who could rent an Xbox game and rip it to his hard drive. Emulation wasn’t that impressive to me because the Duke sucks for snes games but damn, getting your hands on KOTOR permanently for $3 was amazing as a kid too young to have a job
>>
>>11999923
Yea you never really know what widescreen entails on the console. M$ had the right idea with putting all settings into the system menu, but every game has a different idea of what "widescreen" is. Kind of like HDR today - good tech, but bad implementation.
That reminds me: NTSC-Xbox allowed you to choose between 480i, 480p, and 720p resolutions. (Soul Calibur II is great in 720p) cool stuff. PAL-Xbox didn't have the progressive scan options sadly, but it had a system wide PAL-60 mode, so we didn't have to deal with 50Hz games anymore. In theory at least...as random games (like fucking Halo!) had problems with it, but you could never know this unless you tried. Turning a great feature into guess-work sometimes. I imagine some games made use of the higher 576i resolution, but who knows.
>>
Ive been enjoying Rallisport Challenge 2 recently and have been meaning to play Scarface too.
>>
I liked fight night. It was actually what got me into boxing, come to think of it.
>>
God tier multiplat machine and vibes that microsoft will NEVER have again.
I've had at least 4 different consoles.
Hardware reliability sucks now with disc drives and hdd, psu, leaky corrosive capacitors
I wish the emulation was as good as dolphin
>>
>>11998793
I will say that certain consoles have a lot of soul due to their specific architecture. In the end however, does it matter if the Xbox was basically a PC?

I think that Nintendo and Sega have a high amount of soul to them. Their platforms feels so authentic. Like they wanted to make certain games and they made the hardware with these games in mind. Their franchises also feel so interconnected and part of your childhood even if you have never played them.
>>
>>11999343
Depends on the game. I think stuff like the Halo games and NGB work fine but I tried to play Panzer Dragoon Orta and it lags heavily.
>>
>>11999824
The GameCube version was also 60fps btw
>>

>What are your favourite games and memories with it?

The fact I could rip music CDs to the hard drive blew my mind. I would make custom soundtracks and listen to them while playing GTA 3 and Vice City. Some of my favorite games were Morrowind, Phantasy Star Online, Soul Caliber 2, Ninja Gaiden Black, Project Gotham Racing 1 & 2, Spider-Man 2, Tiger Woods PGA 04, Madden 04, GTA: Vice City, and Knights of the Old Republic.

Not a recent event. Xbox being very problematic is a 2015 affirmation.

>I wish the emulation was as good as dolphin
Nearly every game worth playing are on PC or already on PCSX2/Dolphin with enhancements surpassing every original version.
No emulator Xbox needed.

I loved pic related when I was a a pre-teen just in middle school and discovering "trash humor" with sex, swears and grossness. I hoped to play it online but never had the chance back in the day, asking to my parents for a monthly fee to play online was really a death sentence to ask. Something i wish I could expirience back in the day.
I heard it was popular to play Halo 2 online, that was another dream to play it back in the day. I had a friend who said he had the subscription and could play online, he played unreal championship.

>>60fps ver of a ps2 game
examples of this? when I got my xbox and checked out some multiplats I had already played on ps2, I remember being surprised how often they looked/ran mostly the same. This years ago though. But for example I remember Black and TSFP running and looking pretty much the same to me. You did always get 480p on xbox though.

this is the correct take, style counts for a lot in retro gaming xbox and dreamcast are flawed but authentic consoles, made even moreso because they were never popular in their generation either
>>
>>12005964
Xbox was plenty popular and Halo was a cultural phenomenon. It outsold the Gamecube. It just paled in comparison to the PS2's overwhelming popularity.
