I have a lot more fun whenever a wad maker sparingly places Doom 2 monsters and doesn't give the ss at all.

The warped tortured soul sky is pretty awesome IMO, it's just that the shitty and cheap horizontally squashed mountains look fucking awful and clashes horribly.

They should have just reused the same E3 mountanline but with the screaming souls sky, here's a mockup of what this could have looked like (blown up and with Doom's aspect ratio applied for demonstration), which I made while listening to Kickstart My Heart and Cry Little Sister.

>>11999663
Those new enemies are good as fuck though. Also it has many good levels.

>>11999938
I think that Doom 2 would have benefited from the game being divided up into episodes like the first game was, so that the player's inventory would be reset a few times, allowing for better pacing and the player not always having the SSG at all times, so they can't over-rely on it.
>>
>>12000978
They are both horizontally seamless though.

>allowing for better pacing and the player not always having the SSG at all times, so they can't over-rely on it.
Early SSG + no real beefy encounters that justify it, mostly tons of lowtier zombies and imps. That's something Plutonia does real well: You get an SSG AND rocket launcher in the first level, but it also uses a lot of nasty enemies on UV.
Also agree about episodic cutups improving the pacing.

The E3 sky is based on a picture of IRL mountains, which is why it looks better and more realistic. A bunch of the OG Doom textures were taken from pictures.
>>
>>12001924
The mountains in Doom 2's SKY3 are actually recycled from Doom 1's SKY2.
I'll see if I can find the .gif showing it. It's done badly and crudely though.
>>
I loved 64's skyboxes the most, there was great variety. Looked really moody and grim.

I couldn't find that fucking .gif, but here's one of the WIPs from the "vault," it's the same mountains as on Deimos, only compacted and they overlaid that white ZIMMER texture to it.

>>12002031
They were tits. I like how they had dark night skies for some levels also, a bit like in TNT.
>>
>>11999653
Doom 2 is suppossed to be on Earth so the sky you are looking at is being filled with human souls.

n-no?
>>
>>12004813
Ok, I was thinking of this part in MAP02 where you have to run off the ledge into the little room and then get the red key, I always thought that when you ran at the ledge you got a slight height boost and that's what allowed you to make the jump. But, it turns out you don't get a height boost from running at the ledge, it's just that your momentum causes you to go far enough horizontally that there's only a slight drop, so when you hit the other side, the height difference is within the threshold that Doom uses to determine whether a height different blocks you or not, and it just places you in the room. It's just like when you walk up stairs, the height different of each step is small enough that it allows you to ascend. So, yeah, there's no auto-jump.

Doom 2 levels are also better

This. They were more weird and creative and surreal.

What bothers me
>nuDoom is apparently considered a Christian game
>do a quick glance at the lore
>Satan created what is essentially god and the angels
>he becomes obsessed with immortality
>you literally kill god who is also satan

Its wild how much people gaslight themselves into thinking something is Christian just because they want to play it.
>>
>>12006042
I thought they were all aliens in the new one.
>>
>>12006048
Nah, they got creator "gods" and the big twist of the trilogy is THE creator god is Lucifer and did everything that he did due to his obsession with eternal life. Its a really nasty inverse of the Bible, yet you see nu-Doom being propped up like one of the few examples of "Christian vidya". OG Doom on the other hand is closer just by virtue of killing demons to reclaim your bnuy.
>>
>>12005510
Yeah, it's more like a horizontal leap, so to say.

>>12005641
>>12006039
I think that Doom 2 generally has more creative level design, but there's lots of good levels in Doom as well. There's also a few bad levels in both.

>>12006042
Can't stand the new lore at all. The classic games kept things really ambiguous which is much better.

>The classic games kept things really ambiguous which is much better.
Carmack vindicated as always. Action games should always have a vague minimal story.

See I thought they were doing aliens like the Covenant from Halo. I thought because they weren't doing any of the symbols or imagery that the old games and Doom 3 were going for they just sorta said nah they aren't demons and they took the Mars thing a little too literally.

I think there's a fundamental misunderstanding of Doom in creators and community. More for people who watched The Doom Comic reading on youtube to OC Remix versions of At Doom's Gate. It seems these people forget half of Doom is great tunes like Hiding the Secrets and (my favorite) Donna to the Rescue, but the other half is things like Suspense which has no percussion and Demons on the Prey which is a slow, droning track. It's not all Berserk packs and measuring the area of guts.

Some people really like Brutal Doom,, and that's who I think made the new series of Doom games.

Eyup. Genuinely serves me right for trying to play any post 2008 games. You know, its funny, I've played three 7th and 8th gen games recently and each one got so degenerate I've had to drop em.
>>12006092
I really wouldn't be surprised if they tried to tie the whole thing into aliens as well. It was a pretty big cluster. For now though, I've learned my lesson. Back to og Doom for me. Might finally play through the Quake games though just to have a bit of a different flavor.
>>
>>12006127
Quake is good, better than Doom for me. Feels more like every level is an intricate dungeon rather than a shooting gallery.
>>
>>12006165
I'm excited to play it. The setting looks really cool and man do I need an outlet for these big feelings. I'm kinda glad I put off playing that series until now when I really don't have much else to play.

Yeah, I was about to say that at least the Doom 2 skulls have (presumably) more artistic effort put into them, assuming they weren't just copped for somewhere else.

The only thing bad about Episode 1 is the lack of difficulty. Well, that, and there's weapons and stuff you can't get because it was made to be the shareware episode, but the shareware model is also largely what helped Doom become so popular.
