>the best strategy series is handheld and made by japanese
This makes PCtards seethe
>>
eh, Advance Wars feels more like a puzzle game than a strategy game.
Every map has some specific approach the level designer wants you to take and you get screwed over if you experiment with your own strategies.
>>
>>12000520
Same as most C&C games in singleplayer
>>
>>12000531
In C&C that's the exception, not the rule.
Tiberian Sun was especially bad in that aspect.

The best strategy games were on the Mac actually.
>>
>>12000518
No it isn't.
Infantry spam is too strong and AI is braindead.
The game should've been fog of war only and there should've been some countermeasure against going around enemy units.
>>
>>12000541
>AI is braindead.

The AI was genuinely better in Super Famicom Wars than it was in AW1 and 2 but the average AW tard doesn't even know a series called Famicom Wars started on Famicom.

>Advance Wars feels more like a puzzle game than a strategy game.
Uh, yes? Because the best strategy games are fundamentally puzzle games at their core. The moment you start to introduce garbage like RPG elements and leveling up, you no longer have a strategy game left because players can simply out-grind the strategy requirement for all except the most autistic and tightly-designed games that account for these elements. The issue being that if you account for the RPG elements this tightly, you could have simply gone without them and made your life easier while losing nothing.
>>
>>12000520
that's every campaign mode in your strategy games.
>>
>>12000582
Who the fuck even mentioned RPGs???
>>
>>12000582
Grinding exists in advance wars in the form of factories. Why outthink the ai when you can delay and wear it down through attrition by using your factories to pump out endless waves of cheap, disposable units? You can basically use infantry and damaged APCs as human shields for your tanks.

There are actually a number of RPGs that don't have grinding btw.
>>
>>12000586
He's probably thinking of Fire Emblem the other big Nintendo SRPG.
>>
>>12000518
I tried playing the original, but fuck me the AI is slow as balls. The progression system also sucks. If you decide to replay a level you already finished and then quit mid-way, the territory gets lost to the enemy. The only way to get it back is to beat the whole level again. To hell with that.

You need emulator fast forward for that one

First one is okay but the SFC one is where it's at. It has some crazy hard stages later on. Pic related.

GB Wars 3 has a lot to it and could well be the best, but I never took the time to play through it properly. Your units can be retained between maps, not sure if that's a good thing because it encourages perfectionism.

>handheld series
It started on the NES, shitposter-san
>>
>>12000520
try awbw then, you are forced to strategize when it's against real human beans
>>
>>12000774
If I wanted to deal with other human beings, I'd just get drunk or have sex - not play a video game.

Mmm, such as?
>>
>>12000783
I agree, socialization is the hardest strategy game ever conceived
>>
>>12000789
Just don't grind, it's not a requirement.
>>
>>12000789
Almost all of them.
>>
>>12000798
I'd rather just play a game where the difficulty is designed well instead of the game asking me to self-adjust it. Hence why I fucking hate jarpigs.
>>
>>12000832
Yeah, many people need mommy and daddy developer to hold their hand and aren't capable of creating their own fun within a game space. You aren't alone, RPGs aren't for everyone.

Funnily enough the official release of famicom wars for the wii virtual console added a fast forward button (which I only discovered halfway through all the stages). They knew the AI took too long, also evidenced by their release of gameboy wars turbo.

The issue of Super Famicom Wars (and the other old Wars games) is that most maps are fair maps while the final ones that you only unlock after beating all others maps are heavily stacked in favor of the AI. You can't change game settings inbetween so your choices are:

>Set the AI to any CO other than Billy Gates or Mr. Yamamoto.
>Get 15 extremely easy maps followed by one challenging one.
>Set the AI to Mr. Yamamoto.
>Get 15 hard maps and then get put against one absolutely impossible map.
>>
>>12001542
Here is who I chose and who I was against. I also had exp/lvl-up turned on.

It took me 144 days for that mission >>12000678 because of the tactic I used: I went to block the port in the south before stepping on the island. Terrible idea, that took absolutely fucking forever and I constantly had to restock the subs blocking the port because they'd stick due to lack of oil.

True.

eh dune, command and conquer, close ombar, warcraft, starcraft, warzone 2100, emperor battle for dune, empire erth, populous, civilisation, railroad tycoom. pratorians, arhem, vulcan, hogs of war, chaos battle of wizzards, kingdoms total anilation, stonkers, cossacks, shogun total war, rome total war, lords of midnight, sim city and civilisation, the settlers, space hulk, warhammer dawn of war etc etc all crushingly disagree. In fact strategy in particular is one area the Japanese are not even a contender in a retro gaming, arcade and kids stuff is more their home base.
>>
>>12001560
It took me years to compleet warzone 2100 and all the expansions. Just a good game with some meat to the challenge.
