Redpill me on yars revenge for the Atari 2600. What do we think of this piece? I only discovered it last night. Gentleman? Our thoughts?
Is great if you are drunk or stoned. Is dogshit if you are sober. Is awesome if you are autistic.
>>12001332This was the very first video game I ever played in the 80s, my older brother had an atari 2600. There's not much to say about it, annoying screecnhing audio, colorful pixels and simple game of just shoot through the wallIt was fun for the time but I dont think any 2600 shit is worth playing for me anymore. It'd only be a nostalgia trip
In terms of games that actually had strategy on the 2600 that were also fun and easy to control, it's certainly one of the best.
Great classic game. For it’s time of course, whatever that means to you. I can still have fun with it. My dad’s got his atari hooked up in an old unused bedroom, and we boot it up for a few minutes sometimes when I’m over there. Yar’s usually gets a playthrough and we compete with scores. It’s simple. It came with a crazy comic that probably had a ton of backstory for such a simple game. I always thought it felt like a kind of precursor to a horizontal shmups boss.
When I loaded it in the early 90s I thought there was something wrong with the game's graphics.
The explosion is satisfying.
>>12001332The low end SFX scares the shit out of my bird's cats.
>>12001332I don't understand the popularity of this game. I assume it was featured in some youtube video or was popular in reddit. It wasn't treated differently from any other game when it came out.
>>12001629Most people bought the Atari to play arcade game conversions so any original game for the console is often fondly remembered many years later while anyone wanting to play the arcade games will simply seek out the actual arcade games via emulation or a more accurate port.
>>12001332its one of the best 2600 gamespoint blankyou DID read the comic, right? if you didnt read the comic, you didnt beat the game>>12001338thats retardedstar raiders existsthat games cool af
>>12001629I've heard nothing but accolades for Yars' Revenge for as long as I've had interest in retro gaming (ca. 2007). I think I tried it first when I saw it featured on /v/'s recommended games wiki.
>>12001629just making shit up then?its one of the few non-arcade-ports on the system that actually sold well. it sold as well as shit like berzerk and centipede, which both had the advantage of having brand recognition thanks to arcade popularity. thats extremely notable. theres very few other games on 2600 that were able to do thatyars, and other early console-exclusive games like adventure, is what laid the foundation for console games being something more than just "shittier versions of arcade games"you could play defender at the arcade. you could play a slightly shittier version of it on 2600.with yars, you could only play it on your 2600
>>12001332what is a yars and why does it seek revenge?
>>12001882Mistranslation of Lars they’re european
>>12001893He seeks revenge on music pirating "fans"

yar's revenge? more like yar's hidden gem, amirite?
>>12001332Yet another in a long line of bizarre GBC ports. The smaller screen sucks, and I prefer the 2600 aesthetic, but the bonus stages are okay
>>12002095It's not a hidden gem just because you never heard of it before, zoomzoom. You probably never heard of any Atari games aside from ET.
>>12001882It's a jab at Ray Kassar, then president of Atari.
>>12001332It's a good game with a steep learning curve.
>Warshaw said that the most exciting part of the game for him later was making a significant debut, making a game that was good enough that he enjoyed playing it, and that if he had to pick favorite thing about the game, was that the game had "scored highest among adult women, the single hardest market segment to reach".[68] He suggested in 2006 that the appeal towards women was due to what he described as "the oral component [...] like Pac-Man, you nibble and you run away. The more you eat, the closer you get to danger..."[69]
>>12001332It doesn't have a gameover message so people play it and think the first 2 levels is all the game has to offer. I thought I was pretty good getting to the blue area then later found out I was playing on the easiest setting. It takes a bit of strategy and practice to get that far on normal.>>12003978When they dug up ET everyone want to play this>>12001849I mainly remember Atari Age hyping up Cosmic Arc as such a rare game for years but always seeing it cheap on ebay and I had it on a clone atari too, one of the best on 2600.>>12001629You clearly haven't seen the commercialhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c0Mvwh_Jjhc
>>12003978yea they were pretty fucking stoned all the time at atari thats for sure lol
>>12004024How long is the game?
>>12004681It takes me half an hour or more of tries to get to the 5th round if you consider every 2 levels a round. I stop playing after reaching here as the intensity make me too stressed to reach it again.
