The N64

I think PS1 was the spiritual successor to both the SNES and Genesis. JRPGs, fighting, arcade-style, action, sports, SHMUPs, platformers, racing, etc.
That is the reason why Sega had such a hard time with its Saturn.
>>
>>12001513
N64 is Atari Jaguar spiritual succesor

-64 bits
-American architecture (silicon graphics)
-cartridge
-weird controller
-geared towards NA market
-lack of third party
-library of FPS games

Rayman made for the Jaguar later released in every other consoles
Rayman 2 made for the N64 later released in every other consoles
>>
>>12001494
>Who is the spiritual succesor of the Megadrive/Genesis?
PS2. Literally after the dreamcast flopped they developed as a third party for the PS2
>>
>>12001538
The N64 was a fucking abomination redditor, over priced cartriges and a fisher price design for ;kid friendly' slop at the time adults used PCs or PS1s
>>
>>12001649
Yes, and for the Xbox and GameCube to
>>
>>12001660
The PS2 owned that era though and was the primary developemnt and test target for sega the other two were bystanders although the power of the xbox hardware brought it some good ports.
>>
>>12001538
>Rayman 2 made for the N64
It primarily for the PC it only released on teh N53 at all becaus ethe N64 was in the 'kid friendly' ghetto and Rayman suited it. It was forstly a DOS/Windows franchise. Good games though
>>
>>12001513
Only Pilot Wings, Wave Race, and 1080, F-Zero X would be like SEGA games. Everything else is throughly Nintendo.
>>
>>12001649
Ah yes the megadrive my favorite Jrpg machine
>>
>>12001769
PS2 isn't particularly RPG heavy
>>
You're wrong tranny, it's the PS1 aka the certified cool kids console of that generation.
>>

>Saturn the spiritual succesor of the PC engine
Cmon now anon, the Saturn and the mega drive are both arcade port machines
>>
>>12001769
Good taste
>>12001813
Well, I can get the "weeb console that only was popular in Japan"
>>
>>12001813
Saturn and PC engine have much more in common

>Success in japan international failure
>Very anime and otaku centric
>Ram expansion for both
>The Shmup console of their generation
>Great J-RPG library
>Erotic games

Many flagship franchise of the PC engine receive a sequel in the Saturn like tengai makyou
>>
Oh i forgot the Saturn library feel very disjointed from the Megadrive

Many flagship franchise didn't receive a sequel in the Saturn (Sonic,SOA,Phantasy star...)+lackluster library of sports games which was a major part of the Megadrive identity
>>
>>12001494
>Saturn the spiritual succesor of the PC engine
Nobody says this
>>
>>12001494
>>12001520
> the PS1 is the spiritual succesor to the SNES
a cd addon drive is not a spiritual successor. that's the only job sony was contracted to do. a cd rom drive forf the snes. it's like saying the nintendo FDS for the nes was the spiritual successor of the NES, despite it only being a fucking disk drive.
>and the Saturn the spiritual succesor of the PC engine
yeah, you're just fucking dense as fuck.
stop smoking fent, you cluesless bastards.
>>
>>12001860
Yes people says that
>>
The PS1 is the spiritual successor to the 3DO
>>
>>12001494
It's the N64
I've been saying this
Think about it
A console with games mostly aimed at "mature" teenagers focused around gameplay and multiplayer rather than story, and a lot of sports games too
>>
>>12001494
>>12001981
All consoles are either Nintendo or Sega

SNES is Nintendo, Genesis is Sega, obviously.
But get into the 5th gen and things get complicated
PS1 is Nintendo, Saturn is also Nintendo. N64 is Sega.
PS2 is Nintendo, Gamecube is Nintendo, Xbox is Sega.
>>
I love the Genesis and hate the N64, don't push that comparison. Genesis is arcade bliss.

The PS1
>>

I wish Mischief Makers was on PlayStation.
>>
>spiritual successor
Non-retro buzzword
>>
>>12001860
It's really the spiritual successor of the Genesis but it's the closest thing the PC Engine has as a successor.
>Lots of shmups and shmup arcade ports
>>
>>12001976
The Xbox is the Spiritual successor of the CD-i
>>
>>12002240
And Tengai Makyo
>>
>>12001494
There isn't one. This much SOVL can't be replicated.
>>
>>12001494
>Who is the spiritual succesor of the Megadrive/Genesis?
Technically the Genesis itself is a spiritual successor to the System 16.
>>
>>12001494
Sony does what Nintendony
>>
>>12002429
What's a System 16?
>>
>>12002689
Arcade board used to power Altered Beast, which became a Genesis launch title.
>>
>>12001494
The Xbox 360. It took a little while.
>>
>>12002739
360 is the spiritual successor of the Famicom Disk System.
>>
The PS1 was the japanese successor to the 3DO
>>
NES>SNES>PS1>PS2
PC Engine>Saturn
Dreamcast>Xbox
Jaguar>N64
Sega CD>3DO>Nec pc-FX
GameBoy>GBA
Sega Pico>GameCube

For the Megadrive i think the closest is the Dreamcast, return of flagship title like Sonic, great library of sports games, arcade feeling and relative success in NA but flop in japan
>>
>>12003098
>flop in japan
Not really
>>
>>12003117
The Dreamcast is a flop in japan it's sold much more in North America
>>
The PS1 is the spiritual successor to the Mega Drive, not the SNES.
>Emphasis on vast third party library instead of very small focused first party library
>Fast hardware that punches above it's weight against a 2 year newer Nintendo console
>Less focus on simple and childish games, more focus on challenging games with more adult themes
>Underdog by a newcomer which became the fan favourite of that generation
I never understood the SNES-PS1 comparisons, it's a nonsense comparison.
>>
>>12005026
Jrpg station
>>
>>12005082
JRPG's became popular in the West with FF7 on the PlayStation though. Nobody cared about any of those SNES ones before then. I heard more about Mega Drive JRPG's like Phantasy Star 4, or the Lunar games on the Mega CD, than I ever heard about SNES Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest or whatever.
>>
>>12003130
Sega supported the Dreamcast until 2007 in Japan and it sold better there than anywhere else
>>
>>12001982
>PS1 is Nintendo, Saturn is also Nintendo. N64 is Sega.
>PS2 is Nintendo, Gamecube is Nintendo, Xbox is Sega.
This is retarded but I totally agree.
>>
>>12005026
Retard post. PS1 is the spiritual successor of the Atari 5200.
>>
>>12001809
That's the closest I can think of. I mean:
- both targeted "mature" gamers
- both emphasized hardware performance in their marketing
- both had lots of PC ports
>>12001538
The N64 really is like the Jaguar done right.
>>
>>12005123
Which is weird because I heard that part of the reason the SMS and Genesis were unpopular in Japan was because they were viewed as less Japanese or "un-Japanese" compared to Sony or Nintendo. Why is this? Is this true?

It never made sense to me but then they turned it around in that market with the Saturn and Dreamcast. So what changed? I know the Saturn had a lot of Japanese exclusives and catered largely to their market. Could it really be the games? Because the Mega Drive did indeed have excellent games, a shitload of arcade ports and lots of Japanese exclusives (and non exclusive Japanese games) which were utterly top tier. So what gives?
>>
>>12006329
The PC Engine already took up the market for arcade ports, shmups, and CD based games, so the Mega Drive just kinda got caught in the middle. With the PC-FX going a different direction, it allowed the Saturn and Dreamcast to grab that market.
>>
>>12001494
Genesis was the normie machine back then, so N64, then the PS2, which was another SGI machine like N64.
>>
>>12006329
Sega started out as an American company, back when they were doing electromechanical arcade games in the 50s.
>>12007591
I thought the PS1 was more of a "normie" machine.
>>
>>12009235
*compared to the N64. Should've added that.
