How good are modern methods for playing games written for outdated graphic APIs? Good enough or get a period PC?
>>
I've heard it's good enough, though if you want the latter, I'm not stopping you, but get ready to run into old computer headaches.

Both wrapper and emulation options exist for 3DFX cards. The real challenge is emulating those early Nvidia cards...

DxWnd and CnC-DDraw

Hey, that can have its charm too.

At least when you actually get it working.
>>
Good games usually have modernish renderers and for everything else there is dgvoodoo.

3dfx? Almost perfect.

Just buy a GeForce 2 PCI/AGP. They're not even expensive

86box solves basically anything that doesnt need a pentium 3 or faster, then a win98se vm with softgpu solves anything that doesnt need xp at the minimum
>>

If you have a shit CPU, 86Box is out of the question for Pentium 2 games. Generally nGlide or dgVoodoo does the job

It's very easy to pick something up these days too. Old Thinkpads are still relatively cheap and before a certain point when they switched to AC97, they all had sound blaster clones onboard which were quite good. Most laptops from say '93 to '98 had Sound Blasters or clones onboard. They are cheap and the batteries are shot but they usually have provision for external keyboard, mouse, and monitor so they are an easy and small plug and play retro game option.

Old computers and stuff are still around too, even free ones. I got a flat screen 19" Samsung multisync CRT monitor for free. It's beautiful.

Damn. I'm too lazy to have an additional setup, but a CRT monitor sounds great for Dreamcast VGA

I also have a Sony 22" CRT that's basically the 4:3 version of the famous wide one, forget the model number. It'll do 1600x1200. It was made for SGI and I got a deal on it years ago for $200 because the base was busted. But these VESA bases were somewhat standard and I got another one off some Dell monitor that fit precisely. Color doesn't match though.

I'm just happy I didn't fuck up and lose or sell my old voodoo 5500 from when I was a kid, I ended up building a pc around that
>>
>>12005585
I hear ya, I have a Voodoo 3 3000 that I kept. I got it new. Still works great.

I heard nGlide works in Windows98 with DX9c. I am hoping the performance hit isn't significant such that the twins here can still compete at a relatively equal footing. Everyone keeps mentioning dgVoodoo, but I everything I read means it is for DX11 or DX12 which is well beyond Win98.
