I'm not a zoomer and YI was actually my favorite Mario when I was a teen, but I replayed it like ten years ago after playing SMB3 and SMW and it wasn't as enjoyable. The levels had a tendency to overstay their welcome and it was more geared to collecting shit rather than having fun platforming. That said the music and visuals remain the absolute best.
Maybe I ought to replay it again without playing the other games before to see if I enjoy it more again.

Ive always thought this game was fundamentally flawed. It's not fun to get 100% on every level but if you decide to just run through each level the game isn't fun that way either. I have always thought collectibles in 2D games are abhorrently tedious and annoying. In a 2D game you inherently want to keep moving forward, so to constantly halt your progress to go through a tangential side area just sucks, at least to me. If you ignore the collectibles in this game, all youre left with is a pretty boring platformer with de-emphasized jumps that doesn't usually place very many obstacles in your path. If you do go for the 100%, you're slowly running around, making sure you get all the coins, go down every pipe, unlock every door, kill every enemy, run up against any inconspicuous corners to find hidden question mark balloons, resetting the game if you ever get hit, etc, etc. Its not fun and takes too long. Game would be a lot better if the 5 flowers were the only collectible but even then I probably still wouldn't enjoy it.

yeah i didnt fall for that even though i was only 10 years old. im pretty sure donkey kong country was the last snes game i got. the difference though was that game was actually amazing along with having crazy new graphics. crying baby mario in "smw2" with a completely different/garish visual style was a non-starter

Not 100%ing the game on first try allows you to do a second playthrough where you can focus on the small details instead of merely trying to survive. As kids we were happy if we could just beat each level and get far enough in the game. 100% it was unthinkable.
