I am playing Earthbound, and i am having fun. Thanks for listening
>>12004834>I'm taking the girthround>I'm enjoying itYeah, sounds pretty gay
the start of the game up thru the four towns is pure sovl. i love the game overall but that stuff in particular is what i enjoy most.
I lost like 3 times against the first boss (the ant)
>>12004894The writing warms my withered, broken soul
>>12004904Thats pretty bad, wait until you get to the moles
>>12004834I got filtered by the difficulty curve>JUST
>>12004834Based fun haver
>>12004834uh we don’t do that here
>>12004904>>12004976the early game with just ness is arguably the hardest part
>>12004976>mfw carbon dog >mfw diamond dog
>>12004834Not going to spoil anything but don't let the cosmic horror and age regression shit hit you too hard at the ending.Lets just say the segment after the Diamond Dog fight broke me to tears. Hold strong bro.
>>12005167I got definitively filtered by Stonehenge :/
Okay okay, you win I'm going to play it.I have previously played the NES game, Mother, but only for about an hour.Do I need to play the other games to appreciate Earthbound?
>>12005167This is probably true but since it is the start of the game it doesnt feel too bad because you are just starting to do battles and level. The part that usually irritates me the most is the path from twoson to happy happy village. The backtracking on top of tough enemies that afflict status effects on Ness and one shot attacks from exploding trees.
>>12005651Mother 1 and 2 are not connected to each other, but 2 and 3 are. All 3 are very different, and 1 is also worth playing, but it's fine if you go back to it later.
>>12004834:)
i love this game
>>12004934Third hardest bosses in the game.
>>12005663Most people will agree that the areas around Twoson seem "really hard" according to their memories. But, without thinking why, that's generally because they instantly pair their memories of "hard Earthbound fights" to "randomly re-assigned direction controls because of that FUCKING MUSHROOM," and relent their time there.
>>12005651I encourage you to listen to the music while you play.Entering a new area? Sit for a second and enjoy the music.Music WILL improve your enjoyment.
>>12006171I would say the connection between MOTHER and MOTHER 2 is as strong as the connection between MOTHER 2 and MOTHER 3. They're both similar in that the protagonists are unrelated but the villains carry over.
>>12004834I do a yearly play through, fun charming game.
>>12006303>I would say the connection between MOTHER and MOTHER 2 is as strong as the connection between MOTHER 2 and MOTHER 3No. The two Giygases are completely different characters with different origins and no continuity between them. There's simply no turn of events where M1 Giygas magically turns himself into M2 Giygas out of nowhere.Meanwhile in Mother 3 there's perfect continuity and the villain is exactly where he was left off in the previous game.
>>12004834Hell fucking yeah, anon.
>>12006285No, I'm the 3rd hardest boss!
>>12004976You gotta spend every penny on weapons and armour. Even +5 is the difference between life and death, let the stores fleece you
>>12005663>>12005663I hate mushrooms
>>12006216That TV is pure soul, we need to go back
>>12007576>I'm one of the masters of this hole.>There are five masters in all. We are all moles, of course.>I believe I'm the third strongest amongst us.>Take your best shot!>I'm really the third strongest master.>I'll destroy you now!>I'm truly the third strongest master of this hole.>I'll demonstrate the power of being third to you!>My strength falls between the second and fourth strongest masters.>Do you wanna test me?>Ha ha ha.>You've fought the strongest master of this hole,>the second strongest master of this hole,>the fourth strongest master of this hole,>and the weakest master of this hole!>I'm truly the third strongest master of this hole.>Now you see the true advantage of being third!
>>12008515This writing just makes me chuckle. Its so silly, and you just end up playing with a smile on your face
>>12006337>The two Giygases are completely different characters with different origins and no continuity between themReally?
>>12004834I'm glad you're enjoying it. It's really as good as the memes say.I'm old and had it on SNES and friends were like oh it's like cartoon FF etc and hour or two in got hooked. My one compliant (drunk) is Jeff doesn't scale.
>>12010136Jeff is too busy fixing stuff instead of sleeping
I just beat moonside!So trippy
>>12006337>The two Giygases are completely different characters with different origins and no continuity between them.???
>>12010469Is that anon thinking of the novels? Since in those, Giegue/Giygas is two separate guys and the novels don't connect whatsoever.
>>12010692>mother novelsi dont even want to know what that author looks like
>>12004976How the fuck is a JRPG difficult? Just don't run away from the battles nigga
>>12010694Her pen name is Saori Kumi, and yes, the novels are fucking weird. For what I can remember...For MOTHER 1... >She made Ninten a blond asshole kid named Ken>Ken calls Ana hot in a sleeping gown>Lloyd's dad is now Dr. Distorto >she replaced Teddy with a 40 something ginger biker fucker named Hurricane Joe with what is basically a twink sidekick named Sharp>the ending sentence is ambiguous but the worst reading implies she may be pregnant (this is after some weird cave shit where Ken and Ana get hypnotized by cave water, enter a psychic love bubble, and after all that is done, they stop arguing)>Ken somehow whips out a grenade during the final battleMOTHER 2 has>Porky being pregnant with Giygas (who is not the M1 antagonist, but an unrelated fuck), and this results in Porky getting fatter and grosser, and the final battle is basically the party vs the Porky flesh dimension)>Aloysius Minch is basically Plankton from SpongeBob, who bought Ness's dad's restaurant chain named Ness Burger and keeps trying to figure out the secret recipe (he dies in Deep Darkness counting leaves like money) >Ness's mom is described as having a massive set of boobs (and at points, Ness may have a thing for her? My memory of these books are a bit hazy, forgive me)>Jeff is handicapped because he got his legs crushed in an incident from his past that also killed his brother (he gets prosthetic legs from his dad)>Paula gets drunk on hotel wine, Jeff tries to wrestle the bottle away from her, and Ness walks in, sees this, and thinks that Jeff and Paula are screwing while running away>Ness gets hit on by an adult gay man in Summers>Poo gets married off to a 7-year old little girl, and everybody is like, fine with itI'm missing a bunch of shit because my memory is ass, but there's a fucking taste of the weirdness you can find in the Saori Kumi novels
>>12010734Is this kino translates?
>>12010734>
>>12010810Not in your monkey language.
>>12010695Nta but the early game can be unforgiving.
>>12010810It got translated in English, though I would not consider it kino, anon
>>12010734What.The.FUCK.
>>12010734Someone should make a hack based on them
>>12010469>???What do you not understand?>>12010692The fuck are you talking about? Mother 1 and 2, the games, aren't connected either. Itoi said you can interpret them as connected if you want to, but just admitting they're separate stories requires way less mental gymnastics.
>>12013289I honestly would morbidly watch a playthrough of it, I think. The novels are a fucking car crash you cannot look away from
Never played these before, do you need to play the games in order?
>>12013375No, but in order is definitely the best way. People who can't stand old RPGs tend to skip the first one or play it later, though.
>>12004834>it took until Poo to have funSame for me too, shame it takes a while to get to that point.
>>12010734Japan is an extremely weird place, hyper conseevative and rigid, whilst also perverted. Actually that makes sense
>>12013953Yeah takes ages, to get all the main characters.I just realised these old school rpgs are really much longer than more modern games, 60/70 hours is standard for them. And most isnt filler, you dont have to grind in Earthbound, just playing the game levels you up. But the early game is definitely tougher
>>12015450Is this real?
>>12016192Yes, please send bank details
>>12004894the whole game is great but I think the much more surreal second half is more interesting.
>>12005651youre literally better off not touching mother (aka earthbound for hipster contrarians) and mother 3 (aka earthbound for redditors) and just enjoying earthbound.
why have there been so many mother threads the past week? astroturfing from nintendo in anticipation for a mother series re-release on the switch?
>>12016978mother 3 is NEVER getting a western realize you dumbass. you can not release a game with realistically depicted troons as major characters in current year.
>>12016978Honestly, dunno. I guess it's just MOTHER season. I made mine without even knowing a Direct was coming
>>12016979Bro why
>>12016979Those "troons" are>clearly dragqueens>willingly die for the greater good>immortal psychic magical beingsMeanwhile the villains are literal capitalist pigs, Mother 3 would be beloved by the modern audience
>>12017143>>clearly dragqueensYeah and they all have stereotypical masculine features, modern audiences would be offended by that>capitalistIt's more about totalitarian regime, which can be communist too, in fact, military-run government are typical not capitalist but some form of communism or socialism. The book Mother 3 was based off was about 2 twin brothers surviving a soviet occupied country (Hungary, possibly, per the book's author's own experience)
>>12017143>Meanwhile the villains are literal capitalist pigsHow wild. Im so glad thats fiction and irl billionaires arent raping the environment, destroying the amazon rainforest, converting animal habitat into palm oil farms to pump it into our food to make everyone ill, so people are dependent on large pharmaceutical conglomerates to remain alive. That would be hell to live in
Remember, don't stop killing Starmen until you have the Sword of Kings.
>>12017454Why?
>>12017460Because Poo can only equip 4 items, and the Sword of Kings is the only one you can miss permanently.
>>12017463Very insightful. Thank you, ChatGPT.
>>12017463I googled, thanks anon
>>12017473>chatgpt fluffing up itselfSAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAR
>>12017467What the fuck else do you want? How does he play without it? I don't know, because I always get the full set. It's like a 1/125 odds drop, and that's mild for a JRPG.Where are the others? I forget, but I think the Diadem is in the Dinosaur place.I always genocide Starmen until I have the sword, and I always play straight through without stopping when Paula gets kidnapped.
>>12017476You are a bot.
>>12017478Fuck off >>12017476Thanks anon, im looking this up
>>12017476he's mostly just an only psi user unless you're fighting weak enemies, so like ana but less frail. freeze alpha (later beta) is cheap enough to serve as his bash. i don't really bother with starstorm but alpha is pretty powerful and reasonably cheap. you can backup heal with him but since ness always has more pp i wait until he's getting low to do that.also the bracer's in pink cloud and the cloak is in lumine hall, you're right about the diadem.
>>12004834good for you op
do you use the caterpillars for xp?
>>12017502Yes.
>>12017502Ness is level 43 and i havent met Poo yet
>>12017538That sounds about right, from my memories, at least
>>12004834Is this your first playthrough, by the way
>>12018535Its my first playthrough, I have made minimal use of a guide except when Jeff refused to fix anything broken. Then I read he has to be the one in possession of the broken item lol. The game has become a bit easier, combat wise, which I really like since the strength of the game is in its writing which I enjoy a lot
>>12004834Is it One-nett or “Own”-nett?Yeah I know TWOson, THREEd
>>12019762Oh-nett
>>12004834love that game. have fun!
>>12004834It’s a great game. I hope you enjoy it. The sprites are fantastic.
>>12017538I am level 34 and I meet poo every day, at least once a day
>>12020171I only meet poo every 2 days usually
I'm not OP but also replaying it (on GBA).Just got Paula yesterday and now we're on our way to Twoson back, always lovely to see her reunion with her dad (amd then him commending her to Ness)
>>12020917Any differences between the gba and snes version?
>>12021103I noticed GBA has no slowdowns (on SNES, there's some slowdown when there's a lot of enemies or characters on the map).As a con, it has a thinner soundtrack (though it's interesting to hear the differences imo).MOTHER 1 GBA has some more changes, like the EVE chip or the non-bugged run function
>>12021115That's interesting, usually the GBA is the weaker version, good to see it was properly optimised.I'm using the snes version and I did notice the slowdown but luckily reaction times don't really matter
yeah you could say i like this game a bit
>>12022046How much is a copy worth these days?
>>12017502The caterpillars in the desert?
>>12022074$350
>>12022380Fuck. I'm so glad emulation exists. Fuck Nintendo
>>12004834It's the best game ever, the most fun game ever too.
>>12006293It was hard as a kid in the 90s and that's where I got stumped before we turned the game in and I didn't see it for years until Emulators came out. It's hard, if you don't know what you're doing, essentially.
>>12006337Nah, it was said in the original Nintendo Power interviews that Giygas was Giegue from the first game, but he physically collapsed under PSI powers.
>>12022564People forget how obtuse gaming was before the internet
>>12022564like a lot of jrpgs, the early game is arguably the hardest. especially in earthbound because you only have one party member and the rolling hp mechanic doesnt really work until later.
>>12022553You're mad at nintendo for the prices collectors and resellers in the west decide?
>>12023006Yes.
