Long time ago, I bought a memory card that had FreePSXBoot on it to play jp imports (I was lazy to do it myself). Used it with a couple of games and It worked fine. Recently got Marvel Vs Capcom and it wouldn't boot. Tried doing the disk swap option and I finally got it to load after some tries, but I got a anti piracy screen? Tried it some more and I wouldn't even boot to the screen. Should I just get a game shark or something similar?

I recently went through the same thing after installing FreePSXBoot on my memory card some years ago. The problem is Unirom is outdated and doesn't have any anti-piracy measures, so you'll have to either

A) Wipe that memory card and install FreePSXBoot and Tonyhax to it which has better compatibility and supports copy protected games https://alex-free.github.io/tonyhax-international/freepsxboot-exploit.html
The way I did this was using Memory Card Annihilator on my PS2. If you go this route, you may have to use an older version of ULaunchelf, or your memory card that currently has FreePSXBoot on it might freeze the PS2. Not joking, this is what I had to do.

or

B) Patch your game with an anti-modchip crack then burn it to disc, and it should work

Np, good luck getting it all worked out.

Btw here's the link that helped me. If you try to format and restore a new image to that memory card using MC Annihilator but it freezes your PS2, you will need to launch MC Annihilator from an older version of Ulaunch THEN insert the memory card.

Any "free" mcboot game needs to be patched beforr playing sadly you need the patcher which is down as the page.

you need to find the wares scene releases of such games (or patches) that have the copy protections cracked and removed. a lot of playstation games programmers weren't completely retarded and had all kinds of checks to see if it was an original disk or if anything in memory is out the ordinary/plugged into any port etc.

In my experience, there were some jap games that still had their anti piracy go off when i tried using work arounds on a ps1 or ps2, but usually never both, so i would just use it on the other system. I recall Misadventures of Tron giving me that same screen once when using the old external device method for imports on ps1, while on ps2, i hit a few Bandai published games that wouldn't start.
