We went from Kirby super star having some of the best sprite work on the snes to Kirby 3 having a very nice unique style to hideous crystal shards
>>
I had Dreamland 2 and Super Star as a kid.
Crystal Shards came out when I was 11. I begged my mom to get it for me, I begged for this more than anything else in childhood because I had loved Super Star so much years earlier. I had been reading every post about it on IGN with dial up for a year or more.
Then I got it and it kinda sucked (no pun intended). I'm not one to hate something for "looking childish" but this was insulting, it's like it was made for actual toddlers.
Most games lasted me months, I beat this in a few days, it was so short and easy. It wasn't even fun.
Because I had begged for it like a spoiled child I felt ashamed and as far as I remember never acted like that again.

Crystal Shards was the natural progression of Dreamland 3 in style, gameplay and story; it wraps up the Dark Matter story that begins in Dreamland 2.

This is exactly how I felt with Yoshi’s Story. I felt so much remorse for forcing my mom to pay full price for a game I should have rented instead. I was legitimately depressed. My mom was a wagie when I was young and we had money problems but she still decided to buy a new game cause I kept asking. It was one of the few times I got a new game other than renting or thrifting.

Super Star didn't have "some of the best sprite work", it had hastily done pre-rendered backgrounds, off-model character sprites with poor shading and most of the later subgames consisting of recycling graphics from the first few constantly. It doesn't look bad, but by comparison, Crystal Shards had developers go out of their way to make each stage unique with different environments and details, while also making sure they're all somewhat connected (like how you can often see the buildings or structures you enter before going inside the section). There's even things like a sand elephant in Aqua Star, or Miracle Matter's boss arena looming over the last room of Ripple Star's enemy rush stage.

Fags in this thread this game was great. I rented it and later bought it I liked it a lot. I had played shadows of the empire as well as quake and doom 64 and I could still appreciate Kirby 64 for being what it was. The ability to mix and match the attacks was what made it so unique and replay able. I would challenge myself to try different things every time I played. it also looked really good. Graphics were crisp and clear.

Again faggots, yoshi story is another great example of a game with lots of replay value. yoshi story is not that different from starfox in the sense you can finish it once and beat it in like a half hour or an hour but there are alternate paths to explore and experiment with. do you think star fox 64 is a shitty game because you can beat it once in an hour and it’s done? Or do you go back and replay it from time to time taking different routes? I also appreciated how yoshi story was so visually different to other games on the console. it’s one of my favorite games to play once or twice a year just to reexperience. The n64 should have had more side scrollers because they could have looked great compared to the already great looking snes ones. yoshi story was worth owning or at least playing a handful of times for the sheer sake of it being one of the few n64 2d games. (Like Kirby 64) these two games felt like a natural evolution of what came before it. Instead of reinventing the wheel like Mario 64 they gave you the older formula but with more powerful hardware.

You raise a good point, some of the levels in crystal shards are cool to appreciate for all the background details they had which they didn’t need to do but they did anyway. As a kid I found it impressive and I brought it with me to a friends house a few times just to show other people. It’s been so long Nintendo should reintroduce a game with the mix and match ability formula again I think it would seem fresh today.

I like all Kirby games but evidently the best games with the best gameplay are the ones wit the least impressive visuals
Adventure is wonderful too but that framerate
>>
>>12005547
Peaked with Adventure (literally the second game!) and then they didn't know what to do with it anymore so they just threw gimmicks at it.
>>
>>12005553
Kirby64 is easily one of the least awful looking games nintendo made for the system.
>>
>>12005553
It's fine for an N64 game, but yeah, it looks bad when compared to any of the Kirby games which came before

Kirby 64's stages look natural, like they are set in a real place. Lot of 2D kirby (even some 3d) don't have that feel.
Picrel doesn't look like a real place.

I've been playing kerby's dream course lately. Love that game.

OHHH what a surprise...
>>
>>12008256
Yeah in 64 Kirby is really navigating through a real 3d space
New 2.5D games just ape 2D games with polygons but it looks less credible than pixels because everything has depth and the resolution is larger so it's another way for the brain to recognize it's being fooled. Maybe if they used cel shading to look more stylized.

Kirby walking on a thin slice of dirt was acceptable in 2d games but newer consoles have the power to go further, sadly only Kirby 64 did it until Forgotten Land.
