SONIC CD is the biggest Sonic game ever made.Hating on it is a modern revisionist thing.
Yet another Sonic CD thread.
>>12005934The five people who had a MCD loved it, but there's a reason 2 and 3 were base MD games.
>>12005934What, "Elephant in the room" threads aren't doing it for you anymore OP?
Sonic 1, 2, CD, 3, & Knuckles are all good games
>>12005958Factually incorrect.
>>12005934Sonic frontiers is like 24GBThat's roughly 40 times bigger than sonic CD
>>12005958lol CD was always trash in regards to level design and bosses. I remember desperately wanting one and then when it finally came on PC being massively disappointed.
>>12005982>what do you mean it's not hold-right-to-win!? i thought this was a fucking SONIC game!?!?!?!?
The stage design in Sonic CD is uh..."unique", I have no other words for it. I love Stardust Speedway though. Sonic 2 and 3&K are obviously superior to it, but that doesn't make CD a bad game, it's alright, the music's great in both versions.>Please wait a while before making a post>over 100 secondsI haven't made a post yet today, what the fuck.
>>12005992>i thought this was a fucking SONIC game!?!?!?!?You jest, but the lack of speed or the constant interruptions to speed make it irritating.>>12006003>the music's great in both versions.Didn't fit Sonic, at the least 16 and 8 bit eras.
>>12005982>PCUnfaithful port. The only good version is still the 1993 original
I played through it for the first time in a while today. Did the full time travel route and didn't bother with collecting the special stage gems. It's interesting, but I can't ever see myself playing through it again. The exploration is tedious with such a limited field of view and going backwards in a Sonic game just feels antithetical to good about the 1st game. Several stage hazards are just a total chore and the bosses are too easy. The actual mechanics for time traveling are interesting on paper but are ultimately very uneven. Sometimes the solution is incredibly straightforward and obvious, like two springs facing each other or going down a pipe. Then other times its total bullshit with random stage hazards to throw off your acceleration and you aren't given the chance to try it again unless you go elsewhere. It often feels too easy or very unfair, no middle ground. There is really zero reason to ever visit the future version of a zone too, so whenever you accidentally trip a future sign you have to fight against going too fast, which feels terrible.I didn't like it, but it has some neat ideas, great music and it feels like Sonic 1 in a way the others don't. Sometimes I feel like its legendary reputation purely stems from the fact that it was so inaccessible for years. Kind of like Rondo of Blood, except Rondo actually is worth the hype.
>>12005992Sonic CD has the most "hold right to win" boss in Sonic history.
>>12005934It's the FF7 of Sonic, meaning ironic idiots like it.Also has the worse level design in the series. S3&K makes up for it by having branching paths
>>12006192Can these graphics be achieved with base Mega Drive?
>>12006240The Sega CD still had the limitations of 64 on-screen colors and 16 color sprites, but could do sprite scaling and rotation, which the Genesis couldn't.I'd say most of CD's visuals and gameplay could be replicated on a regular Genesis, but some effects would need to be reworked or removed entirely.
>>12006192It's not Sonic's fault that Robotnik didn't account for friction.
>>12006567Do you think all of Sonic CD minus the bonus stages could be done on regular Genny? Also, why is it that the bonus stages perform choppy? You'd think with the power of the Sega CD, they would be able to make it smooth like F-Zero on SNES.
>>12005992There's not many levels in CD that completely stop you since it's meant to be explored front-to-back extremely quickly. I think it's way easier than S2 to just bolt straight to the ending.
Honestly surprised there's not been a mod that has you go through each version of the levels Bad Future/Past/Present/Good Future all in a row.
>>12006618The Special Stage could probably be done on Genesis, but with a lot of caveats, like no textures on the floor and different sprites for every UFO size instead of them just scaling. I think the whole game could be ported over, just with a lot of missing/reworked visual effects and no CD soundtrack, obviously. As for the Special Stage being choppy, it's because the Sega CD's scaling and rotation were handled by the system's ASIC. Everything else is handled using the Genesis' VDP, including that scaling and rotation data, which takes up additional VDP bandwidth. If the Sega CD had it's own onboard VDP, it would've likely been as smooth as F-Zero.
