Thanks for supporting one of the parties responsible for the degradation of the romhacking scene by the way. Fuck off and die.

To be quick about it:
>2016 election happens
>Site owner and staff crash out
>Makes site shittier as a result
>Advertises ACLU on their site, only to ditch them when the ACLU defends conservatives as well
>Attacks fan translator and others for providing accurate fan translations instead of sanitized "For modern audience" ones
>Also edits older articles, like going from covering Valis franchise well to suddenly calling it "Otaku slop" (or so I've heard)
Literally went from a comfy gaming site to basically Resetera (with a little less anti-Japanese racism) overnight, and now you can't mention it on this board without everyone ranting about it.

It's ok. I give Nintendo lots of money, second hand stores too. The stuff that magically makes it my way for free isn't for sale, so it's cool. Very cool in fact because I'm preserving game history and thus a bit of wholesome American culture that's hard to find these days.
>>
even if it werent for the edgy pseudoleftism and trans chasing it does nowadays, hg101 was always just lame surface level analysis of genuinely interesting games that deserved better writeups, unless they were shitty obscure-for-a-reason rpgs ofc in which case hg101 would give those games the red carpet treatment. all in all it was garbage that was only tolerated because nobody else on the english-speaking internet would give those games any attention back in the 2000s, and the site struggles to justify its continued existence to this day

NIntendo is Japanese culture though. If you were preserving American culture it would be Apple, old PCs, Tandy, Texas Instruments Ti994A, Commodore. Anyway sorry of truth hurts. Nintendo is a milennial hipsetr fetish it seems that mainly states, no you were not there. By American friens had commodore 64s not nintendos as kids in the 80s.

That's not quite true anymore and you know it, but besides that, there's numerous non-Nintendo games, like my pic related in my previous post. I got the cart btw as well.
SEGA's Shinobi also usually springs to mind because Nintendo won't even sell the altered ROM in America.

I gues syou don;t like text adventures much then the quintessential early American game, you know...keyboards?
>>
>>12006962
Whatever. Have you written many games since you are an expert above my pay grade on youtube?
>>
>>12006959
Yes, fuckin' really. Example: The 1989 film "The Wizard" which more or less starred the NES and a preview of Super Mario Bros. 3, oh and some punk kids and some story. Actually a fairly good story for what the film was, but I digress from the fact that it's beloved by millions and it's embedded in American culture regardless of the Japanese origin of the video games.
And also, are you telling me that an arcade in America that was packed full of Japanese games were somehow un-American?
>>
>>12006963
>I gues syou don;t like text adventures much
Correct. At that point, I'll read a book, or listen to Art Bell.

Even aside from politicals, HG101 is not a trustworthy source of information, with glaring errors like implication you can't play as Tails alone in Sonic 2. The site is a decent place to find games to play, but everything written there should be taken with a big grain of salt.

Don't forget the fact that most of the people that wormed their way onto RHDN's moderation team to plot against the website and sabotage it in secret came from Hardcore Gaming 101's discord. They weren't just fucking over fan translators, they were aiming to fuck over the single most prominent repository for romhacks in general.
And they succeeded.

Wikipedia is ok, would always double-check their dates though (fixed a shit ton of mistakes there, that's a +/-)

MobyGames would be GOATed if it weren't for their money-grubbing, still rely on them heavily

amiga.abime.net is a great database for everything Amiga

segaretro.org for Sega

/vr/ archives are amazing, this place used to be so damn good

For original documentation and old gone vidya sites: archive.org

Oh and I forgot my biggest source of all, the autists (or possible Chinese content farms) behind those 1,000 video gameplay documentation channels on YT.

Squakenet (pic related lol), World of Longplays, AL82, FirstPlays HD, zirkoni, petsasjim1 (very gemmy), etc.

In the end nothing describes a game as well as playing it, second to that is watching someone else play it.

GameFAQs still, YouTube, Discord, and even Reddit for guides. I don't love the options for sites nowadays, but you go where you have to go to get info.

GameFAQs is still basically the same as it always was, which is cool. Just the boards are way slower.

I like Fighters Generation for its writeups in obscure fighting games, as well as lesser discussed entries in classic franchises, plus cool sprite and artwork galleries.
The downside is that it's written by a single person, who is a hardcore competitive fag and likely autistic, so the reviews can occasionally suck and focus too much on balance and stuff, and be biased as hell. Like, who the fuck cares about character balance in obscure fighting games that you'll extremely likely never play against another human opponent, ever?
Also I've read him trash a game, then go back and edit his review later with EVO numbers to present himself as right. Like
>haha this game got just [insert low number of participants] at EVO! how embarrassing, it seems like i was right in my review all along, the game is trash *cheeky emoticon* (i'm serious, he does that)
which is just fucking cringeworthy and makes him out to be a manchild.

Game journalist here.

The HG101 crew are known in "gaming media" circles as huge scumbags who most journalists know better than to work for (which is why you'll notice that they have to use the same few writers, most of whom are irl friends of the site admin, for everything). They regularly bounce checks, don't do research, are politically obsessed psychopaths, and will try to use "cancel culture" on anyone they dislike. Literally the worst people I've EVER interacted with. STRONGLY advise NOT using their site.

Lunatic Obscurity is an odd game a week blog that usually goes actually obscure for its picks.

Gaming Hell has really well researched stuff about mostly arcade games. Updates rarely but cool when it does.

RPGBlog was a guy working his way through PCE/SuFami rpgs, but is now chrongaming SRPGs. He plays mostly what he wants lately.

SuperAdventuresInGaming is mostly Amiga/DOS stuff but loves its fmvjank and point and click stuff. Another one that rarely updates but is great when it does.
>>
>>12008903
What japanese blogs?
>>
>>12008553
>Classic Game Room
Mark's my favorite retro game reviewer. He didn't care about the technical aspects of the games, he just cared if they were fun or not, which is all that matters. It's a shame he only saw reviews as a business opportunity and not a passion thing but I admire his ability to be up front about it too.
>>
>>12008495
That's fucking incredible.
>>
>>12009664
in his defense it IS kind of a hard game to control, but it's not THAT bad.
>>
>>12006904
>in which case hg101 would give those games the red carpet treatment
I have to point out that even their "red carpet treatment" is abysmal. The more obscure a game is, the more their articles seem decent, but that's because the game is obscure. If you know anything about the game, you'll soon realize what they're writing is, at best, surface-level fluff and, at worst, totally inaccurate garbage that then gets fed to Wikipedia and other normie sources. HG101 is a cancer no matter what.
>>
>>12009634
Loved early CGR but it turned to shit at some point during the 2010s
The humor turned to just "dude Truxton and Vectrex lmao" all the time and it got old really fast, plus he started shilling his merch way too much
