I did a quick runthrough of ep 2, and to be honest, most of the chapter isn't quite as spruced up as the first couple stages. The theater has a couple nice touch-ups like a box of chex and a goo stain behind the ticket counter, as well as some neat extras like arcade games in the lobby (one which hides a little secret).

I'd wager whatever they are/were planning for 2.0 would have affected the later stages in the chapter a lot more (maybe they can make those sewers a little more visually exciting than square green brick passages).

Regular thread reminder to any map makers: please use these unused Doom graphics in your maps, despite being official graphics made by the guy's at ID, these are rarely ever used in any map wads, don't let these graphics go to waste.
>>
>>12007551
>use these decorations that require specific sector heights or that only work as the centerpiece of a large room.
They were unused for a reason.
>>
>>12007561
Just out of curiosity, what reason do you think they were left unused? I always figured ID cut them because of memory limitations on the original Doom II floppy & disc release.
>>
>>12007561
>>12007569
Retard me I just saw the rest of your post about the specific sector heights & large room centerpiece. I do honestly kind of wonder where these would of been used in the base Doom II maps, or were these things cut early before work on the maps started. I still hope for the day when these graphics will be used more, a Doomie can dream.
>>
>>12007589
Also honestly I think a wad that would integrate all the unused graphics for Doom II (like the unused gore graphics in my gif, the graphics of all the unused bushes, & the unused waterfall graphic, I wonder if these were all things that were cut due to the memory limitation thing I mentioned in my other post) back into the Doom II maps would be really cool. I would love to make something like that, it's just my biggest concern would be fucking up the flow of the level with the props, like the props would make moving around during monster fights more cumbersome, that's why I also mentioned that I wish I knew where the map creators may of originally intended to use these props in the Doom II maps.

It's multiple people that are shitting on the Megaman fag. I used to be one of them and quite vocal about, but haven't bothered for a month or so. Got tired. Not autistic enough to continue.

That being said, it's quite clear he "updated" the infograph just to add Megaman. Brutal Doom isn't even a tc, and the infograph just bashes it. So basically it's just 2 mods added (another which was made 26 years ago), so it doesn't seem like a real update, while there is tons of more important stuff like our community projects and solo projects of our members, to be added. If he's capable of adding Megaman to graph, I'm sure he has time and skills to do real update to end this nonsense.

I might look into updating it. I particularly have nothing against Megaman myself. I occasionally enjoy playing those Zandronum with single player deathmatch campaigns. Technically I could let the Megaman be there, but at this point it would make me look like I'm the Megaman schizo which would lead into the update being not accepted and me doing unnecessary work.

That's the irony of the deeds of this Megaman obsession guy. His obsession has done more damage to wad's reputation here than anything else. Maybe the best course of action would be for him to back off a little bit, so everyone can forget the controversy within the wad caused solely by his autism, and sometime in a future make a real big update to infograph to may or may not have Megaman.

Why even Megaman of all of the multiplayer wads. Complex Invasion, QCDE or Horde are all much more popular. If Megaman was added, there would need to be whole lot of multiplayer stuff added.

I have to disagree. Stuff like Rekkr, Golden Souls trilogy, Hell Frontier, 10x10 Project, Machete and Disjunction are all well known and loved even outside /vr/, cacowarded even. They have as much reason to be there as Eviternity, Auger Zenith and other notable stuff. They should not be disqualified just because they come from /vr/ guys. All forums award their own guys. Why shouldn't us?

Nta, but it has nothing like that. It's just Doom 1 episode with 90s like level design, almost all of alpha stuff inc textures, weapons, items, lot if new enemy variants and cool horror atmosphere with ambient noises instead of music. Talentless schizos that have not else going on than shitting on someone elses talented work and spreading outright lies about them, should be hanged from their balls.
>>
>>12007782
Sounds down my alley. Doom 64 did something like that, and I loved it. New monsters are always welcome too, especially since i've been binging vanilla wads lately.
>>
>>12007776
It happened between Q2 and Q3, but Q3 is really not canon anyway, but what is? Quakes and Dooms have always been more of the setting and enviromental story telling instead of character based plotlines.

Later maps quickly disprove that, it's more in the vein of No End of Sight maybe. It also has Valiant suicide bombers.
>>
>>12007808
Dude have you played 90s wads? NEIS is 90s worship too.

Didn't remember suicide bombers, but they kinda fit there. They are used differently than in Valiant for example. There is not a lot of Plutonia or Scythe influence in this.

Simulacrum is the worst at padding fights with Archviles. It's a competent megawad but there's a routine to its design that makes it feel inauthentic, like an AI was told to pump out a megawad of hard and modern looking maps as efficiently as possible. Makes sense since Myolden is pumping out maps as fast as Joe-Ilya.
>>
>>12007880
Myolden maps in Nostalgia (especially the city maps) have a lot of soul. I think he kinda tries out-Sunlust the Sunlust in Simulacrum. Not bad maps in any means, but I can see how they could be seen as less memorable. Muumi is the real soul of Simulacrum though. His maps are very memorable and his animated skies add lot to the atmosphere.

>Dude have you played 90s wads?
Yeah, and by and large most will fail at emulating them. It's not 90s anymore and with modern tools the focus has shifted onto visuals, people can't help but to pour more effort into pretty things. As you said, worship, or homage; but it wouldn't make it a lesser interesting thing to play. I think use3d and Monti still get it right.

>There is not a lot of Plutonia or Scythe influence in this.

All of this stuff is on vrbin already by the way.

Yeah. Immature bastards go with "if I like this one guy, then I must hate another" and that behavior being encouraged in the past doesn't help shit either.

>>12007776
>I remember it in Q4, though.
It was a different character... for some stupid reason.
>>12007787
>Q3 is really not canon anyway
It is. Arena Eternal is just it's own plane of existence or whatever that doesn't really affect any other game.
I'll use Champions as explanation, but it having both BJ and Doomguy there didn't have any affect on each franchise. Same logic implies to Q3A.

Sandy doesn't need to pander to the only niche group of people that somewhat care about him. Petersen had a proper career with many accomplishments.

Without Sandy, Lovecraft and Cthulhu Mythos wouldn't have been so popular from 80s to this day. He created the whole Call Of Cthulhu rpg, fixed Derleth's shitty updates to mythos, and categorized everything much better (like separating Shoggoth and Dark Young Of Shub-Niggurath into different creatures, because they were already completely different creatures in their novels even though both were called Shoggoths). All post 80s mythos novels, games and table tops are based on Sandy's updated Mythos, which makes him second most important Cthulhu Mythos creator after Lovecraft himself. Sure he was important guy on Doom and Quake, but Call Of Cthulhu rpg is his greatest achievement.
>>
>>12008180
>That's everyone but Romero, to be fair.
Is that also a part of the stupid Romero vs. Petersen fallacy anon has mentioned? Sounds to me they both crave attention just the same. But in any case, this topic expires faster than a whore rotting under the desert sun.
>>
>>12008231
>Without Sandy, Lovecraft and Cthulhu Mythos wouldn't have been so popular from 80s to this day.
Yeah there's a couple of interesting documentaries on it that amount to Lovecraft being a largely forgotten author by the 60s/70s.
>>
>>12008231
Did Sandy's game come out before the Metallica song?
>>
>>12008293
Call of Cthulhu was first released in 81, so it was before the song got renamed, yeah.
>>
>>12007892
>Tempered Arms by Lippeth
Baratus and Parias are extremely overpowered IMO, Daedolon is good.
The Fighter gets a shield for his axe which removes his early game weakness against Chaos Serpents. Alt-fire of the Hammer is very powerful and mana-efficient, you can just run around and bash the ground until everybody is dead. Quietus can work as a melee weapon.
The Cleric gets a shield. The Serpent staff has an AOE alt-fire and the Firestorm creates a killing aura around the player. Wraithverge is mostly the same.
The Mage is more balanced. He gets a melee attack for his wand, the Frost Shards launch icicles in full-auto mode, the Arc of Death gibs centaurs in melee. Bloodscourge is much more reliable in tight rooms.
All weapons also receive gorgerous smooth animations.

1. I will buy that maybe there are two (2) people shitting on megaman wad but it's definitely not more than that.
2. It's 100% not one person who's pro-megaman for the simple reason that back when we had anti-megaman janny(ies) they would constantly ban him for literally any mention of megaman or their own banning policies. But other people would always start posting about it whenever that happened.

Be honest, was it you who kept insisting that it's only one guy? Cause you're doing it still.

People initially got defense because it started as that anon trying to replace other mods so he could fanwank his chosen mod, not that the fight these days is even really about the mod anymore.

You might be new on this general. While the anonymity here is all fine and good, usually the project leaders and more known names sometimes post their releases with names. It makes project managing easier. Also I'm pretty sure that Revae, Batandy and lunchlunch don't mind if they have their wads recommended on infograph as they've already been cacowarded and have their wads played by multiple vtubers. Also the infograph does already have our wads section, so it would just be an expansion.

Also this general is very different from the rest of site. Instead of being full contrarian shithole where we just hate everything related to our hobby, we make shitloads of quality oc and celebrate our work. If this starts to become /v/ 2.0 where nobody produces anything but only shitposts off-topic, I have no reason to stay here myself. Luckily this isn't the case.

What comes to bans and jannies, this discussion isn't really related to them.

Yea. Thinking about joining map-center myself when I have more time on my hands. Not yet experienced on Q2 mapping, but I'm interested. Especially when Call Of The Void adds all Q1 monsters and textures, which allows to make much more interesting scenarios in addition of just techbases.

To me it seems like it's about people who want to continue to make progress of which megaman has become a symbol vs people who want to literally never move forward and sit on their 20 yo links/images/etc and I guess jerk off to how "correct" and cosher it is
>>
>>12008643
Dude, there is nothing wrong with adding the Megaman to infograph. There is plenty wrong in disguising the addition of one 15 year old as an actual update and trying to spam it every thread, while refusing to actually update the infograph. You should see the difference in this.

Howerer, you should rejoice. I've had enough of this shit, so I will start doing actual updated infograph next week and will post my progress here. The update will have your Megaman, but also 90 more important updates. Will you now shut up about it?
>>

That makes perfect sense and is exactly why "Name" field exists to begin with. But I'm taking about an authoritarian shithole that some people wanna see this place become. And you can just take a look at various doom forums to see what it inevitably leads to - politics that ruins the actual community of people who care about the thing and not the power bullshit.

> Also this general is very different from the rest of site. Instead of being full contrarian shithole where we just hate everything related to our hobby
Oh but that's exactly what we're seeing now. Some people trying to make changes and actually working off of feedback and then a bunch of faggots never letting them make a single step forward by forcing the old shitty link in the OP.

> we make shitloads of quality oc and celebrate our work
Not when it comes to infographics apparently lol.

> What comes to bans and jannies, this discussion isn't really related to them.
I don't know what discussion are you having but I can tell you that posting here under the oppression of jannies was fucking awful and everybody hated it - which is why every time a janny would be absent even for a couple of hours the whole thread would turn into taking shit on him for being a faggot. > Howerer, you should rejoice. I've had enough of this shit, so I will start doing actual updated infograph next week and will post my progress here. The update will have your Megaman, but also 90 more important updates. Will you now shut up about it?
I can only speak for myself but I would love to see the reaction of these 1-2 anti-megaman trolls to this.
Cause you're like the fifth person now who openly says he's gonna add mm in some way and everybody before you got fucked over despite their good intentions.
So we'll see if your reputation or whatever you think you have is enough for them to not turn against your work simply for having megaman in it.

I'm not trying to win against anyone. I just want stop this unnecessary war on both sides. And of course I'm including Ashes. The most important reason for me doing this is to update the infograph that nobody has updated for 9? years. The source port info is outdated, there's lot of important wads missing, there /vr/'s wads missing etc. I just want to document stuff, our stuff. Megaman is just sidenote to stop this stupid war. And I probably wouldn't even consider adding if it did not have single player campaign. I probably put it to TCs instead mp.

Our own awards is something that was actually knocked around in the past some but nothing ever came out of it simply because there's no reliable and secure way to do this sort of thing with any reasonable degree of anonymity, and also nobody could be fucked to build and organize this kind of shit.
I think we probably all quietly came to the conclusion that it wasn't necessary anyway, and looking at how Cacowards went over time, combined with those catastrophically shitty and low effort "Doom Awards" which were going to be "a better and less biased Cacowards," everyone decided it was even less necessary.

I think however that we should definitely feature a section for our own works on a /vr/ Dooming chart, because it's OUR chart collectively, and I think some of this stuff is genuinely pretty good and worth having some pride over. That's not an awards show, we're just listing some of our own work, it's not like there's absolute tons of them that would take up much space.

I don't know if I still want to continue making one though, and I'm personally at the point where if I continue and get there, I'd simply exclude MM8BDM out of spite. He had his chance and he's been WAY too fucking annoying.

>>12008852
All those Megaman 8-Bit Death Match, servers, and it's all Megaman 8-Bit Tumble Weeds.
You should have gotten on this autism train like 8 years ago, when people on /doom/ actually gave a fuck about this mod, and back when it had more than a handful of people playing it.

Ghouls Vs. Humans is a much cooler multiplayer mod by Cutman anyway.
>>
>>12008884
If you are seriously working on it, then evaluate the fact that even by inclusion of some dead decade old mp mod that a sole poster is forcing into it will make anyone regard the rest of it dubious.
>>
>>12008880
How are we derailing the thread? The first guy asked to finally included the updated link and he got mostly insults in response. Then other people started explaining why the anti-megaman logic doesn't make sense.
So how is addressing a real issue of new link being ignored = derailing?

You seem to have some kind of monarch complex where you put yourself in a position to "punish" people by excluding "their" mod. So I'm already inclined to reject your work, since you're showing yourself to be biased.

Did another playthrough of 2 continuous. I do like the semi-exploratory bits with interesting areas. The Chasm, while being a bit annoying navigation wise, did have some neat bits such as the little industrial zone where you could smack consoles that did things. Monster Condo, Citadel had some cool dressing. City maps even if a bit frustrating at points was alright. The suburbs was kinda fun including the unusual architecture.

Not especially, unless you've got a very specific mapset in mind you're never going to be able to cover everybody's uses of stuff so you usually just get something relatively following the lines of what vanilla does with the items.

From my end I don't buy into the chainsaw/shotgun/blursphere/lightamp/allmap shouldn't be used thing, they've all got their places even if some people obsess over the idea that the chainsaw is a punishment and refuse to pick it up.

I have a problem here.

I want to make a specific altfire state to work when it doesn't have ammo (picrel), but I go into the game and I'm testing in out, it keeps shooting like there was still ammo despite being zero on the counter, here a video of what I'm talking about:
https://files.catbox.moe/aznizy.mp4

I've tried everything that I know, but nothing, so if any zscript coder knows how to fix it...Please
>>
>>12009425
I don't code decorate, but decription says
>Checks the amount of inventorytype items in the actor's inventory. If there are at least amount, the jump is performed. The offset parameter specifies how many frames ahead to jump.

So it seems like you should invert your triggers, and jump for proper sound if there's at least one. But it's also possible that ammo isn't called "clip"? This would make it always fail, presumably.
>>
>>12009425
It's been a very long time since I've fucked with this shit so I may be wrong but I think you got it backwards and have to get it to jump when it's got the ammo to the altfire that actually fires it, and have it otherwise default to the free one.

Not yet, learning conveyors just the other day was the first thing I've done outside of vanilla mapping skills. It was exciting when I got it right. This should be all I need to finish my map, I just wanted some timed monster spawns without making those pesky sound tubes.

Hey, conveyor question anon here again. Is there info out there about conveyor speed to get the correct timing? Like say, if I want a monster spawn at 30 seconds after a trigger, then that number should be able to be correlated to a conveyor speed and length right? If that table doesn't exist then it should, it would be a valuable resource.

32 units of line corresponds to 1 map unit of scroll per tic, IIRC. 1 tic is 1/35 of a second. You do the math.

>In what sense are you maintaining it?

I simply upload the pictures to it and keep an eye open for more, but don't actually create the infographics much like in the same way I've been managing the news archive for almost a decade. Something new or updated gets made for retro games, it gets stapled on, however rare it happens. I used to make a few graphics for Monster Hunter so the amount of work that goes into these thankless efforts is somewhat relatable and especially respected, but that's beside the point. Don't get me wrong, but if there is no consensus and nothing is broken, then nothing is also worth changing, including the link. Some things I used to maintain for a token few generals eventually got replaced in good spirit, and this is obviously not one of them.

Historically speaking, anyone trying to ninja a resource link on /vg/ is more often than not doing out of bad faith or trying to make their 'mark' unless they're modernizing it and is fair game for being considered hostile, it's been no different here. Hell, this year isn't even the first one where it's been hijacked over the same fucking mod and that's not a coincidence. Also, it is ironic that these incidents actually create more disdain for the mod in question than respect by trying to awkwardly hamfist it without warning on several occasions, and the fact that it has gone on for so long is more than enough reason enough not to accept an immediate replacement.

Why are people so averse to tedium in games? Just because the medium devolved into endless dopamine spike it doesn't mean that an experience is inferior because certain elements aren't pleasant to interact with.
Abandoning tedium and struggle in favor of streamlining the experience is what caused the AAA slopmachine.
Dated gameplay and artificial difficulty do not exist, for circumventing certain flaws and limitations in a game is still just an expression of the player's skill.
Games that offer perfect mobility and perfect encounters are nothing but stale and hollow experiences because they never seek to challange the player in any meaningful way, but instead treat him like a dog who has learned a new trick and now has to repeat it endlessly until he gets the feeble reward of having "beaten" the game.

I don't know if posting a soundcloud link would be considered advertising.
Is there any interest in level music?
>>
>>12011140
I can sort of see your angle, but I don't fully agree on all points. Some streamlining can be good, and some tedium can be sacrificed for a better flow.

Tedium of course has some subjectivity to it, and streamlining is sometimes used as a cover word for simply dumbing something down.
>>
>>12011181
>>12011186
Looks solid, newbie. Custom sky and music is always a helpful touch which is easy to apply, but I think that it's the most necessary for Doom 2, because that brown sky and D_RUNNIN gets old crazy quick if you go through random myfirstwads. Looks like you're using Plutonia as your iwad.

You know, I perfectly understand what you're saying and the relevance of your point. AAA slop aside:

My problem is that the tedium feels needless at times, in Heretic. When you're playing a fantasy game and you attack a small flying enemy with tiny limbs with a magic crossbow that fires multiple magic green bolts at the same time, and that tiny flying enemy doesn't fucking die... It just seems unnecessary. It's not that I don't get adding difficulty to combat encounters, but bloating enemy HP and reducing weapon damage is the cheapest form of that.

Doom adjacent games should at least be the exception of that rule. Heretic, for all that I like about the visual presentation, is a frankly annoying game. Not annoying because of the difficulty, but because the difficulty is bestowed upon the player in a way that almost seeks to waste more time than actually give you varied chances to take damage. Being at risk of taking hits is not the issue. The issue is that the enemies are too beefy, to the point where the basic flow of combat feels like you're going over speedbumps in a crowded parking lot. Trying to psy-op people into believing gameplay like that is fun, is retarded.

Quake 1 had beefy enemies. You know what that game has, though? Jumping, air control, and instant weapon switch. That makes weapon combos fun. Fire two grenades at an Ogre on approach, then switch to axe or single shotgun, bait chainsaw attack, and finish the Ogre. That's fun, engaging, just as difficult if not more, and takes a certain amount of skill/thought to learn.

Heretic forces you to fight similarly beefy enemies in greater numbers, while moving slower, and while using weapons that switch, fire, and kill slower.

I wish I could call that fun, but it typically isn't. Playing Heretic and Hexen with High Noon Drifter fixes those games.
>>
>>12011223
Not that anon but it's basically solid /pol/ edgelord shit, it gets dull pretty quickly.
>>
>>12011229
To further my line of thinking here:

Quake 2 also has annoyingly slow weapon switch time and inflated enemy HP. The difference is that you can strafejump in Q2, which means you can choose how to approach combat in terms of where your character is positioned, a lot more carefully and quickly, on the fly. You can jump around enemies in a way that baits their attacks and then account for the weapon switch time to set up more unique combos that kill slightly faster, and it takes a higher degree of skill than simply "choosing what's best for the job." You can still use weapon combos in Quake 2, it's significantly harder to do than in Quake 1, but it's possible. A lot of Quake 2's difficulty can be attributed to people not having played much of the multiplayer. The way you can use grenades to chain together a higher amount of damage, using enemy AI against them to bait certain attacks/movement, and generally being able to move much, much faster than all enemies makes the combat less of a rock-paper-scissors situation than the game can seem on people's first playthroughs. Heretic, on the other hand, absolutely is that rock-paper-scissors type of game, but it's worse than Doom in every way possible.

To improve the look of outdoor areas, you want to draw smaller sectors in front of the areas that change textures, and then you pull them upwards. Do this multiple times until you have something that looks like this.

It's just a bunch of clicking and mousewheeling, basically.

>To further my line of thinking here:

You immediately lost me. The switch speed isn't that far from being as "annoying" as classic Doom's switchspeed, and it has a similar spread of enemy healthpools.
>weapon combos
Don't really exist in either Quake 1 or 2, at least not in a way that helps with killtimes: It would be things like switching to the double barrel shotgun after you lobbed some grenades because you're in melee range now.

That was literally exactly the example I gave regarding Quake 1. Quake 1 also let you combo nailguns and lightning gun in various fights, using single shotgun to finish off enemies at mid range. It also helps manage ammo count and keep from completely running out of anything. It's not purely for kill time, but weapon combos are more fun to pull off than just firing with one weapon, IMHO it adds to the feeling of freedom and player expression in combat, adds to the power fantasy that Ranger can inexplicably throw 8-10 nails at a fiend while it's jumping at him, strafe to the side to avoid getting pounced on, and then pull up with buckshot. That's at least more dynamic, you know? It's not the same old hold-or-tap M1 until thing dies, [insert cyberdemon meme] it's got more flavor.

I have barely touched Heretic ever, but it does give you a bunch of powerups and items to put to use, does it not?

Quake gives you a Quad Damage, so haul ass and blast as many monsters as you can before it runs out, even the otherwise modest SSG you have in Quake becomes a beast when you amp it up to 4x the damage.
Heretic is supposed to give you Tomes Of Power, which soup up all your weapons for a time, and I wonder if anon has been putting those to use at all?

While it has varying quality in it's maps, it does have some very high quality and memorable maps like the airport, basketball arena and gym etc. New weapons and the alt fires are fun too. Yea, I know. Your kind is the reason why gatekeeping is a good practice.
>>
>>12010925
This is just what all popular wads looks like now. Its almost algorithmic at this point. At some stage a new trend for map design will appear and the same thing will happen.
>>
>>12013052
Gatekeeping is also determined collectively by the group, largely, and I'm not seeing a reason to exclude him.

I can tease him for wasting time playing through large levels of a genre he doesn't even like, and being a bitch about it, but keeping level stats on screen is in fact a cheat in itself. You can argue you weren't ever supposed to play Doom in ways you can with GzDoom, but the iD guys certainly never expected you to have a live counter telling you exactly how many monsters and secrets a level has.

Except the enemy HP isn't bloated.
You're meant to either use items or to push all enemies toghether with weaker attacks and blow them up with timebombs, tomed weapons, pods or whatever.
People are acting like Heretic is a Doom reskin but are annoyed it doesn't play like Doom, without realizing that it not playing like Doom means Heretic isn't actually a reskin.
>>
>>12013130
Forgot to add, but you people would absolutely hate Marathon on Total Carnage, despite it being arguably closer in movement and gunplay to Heretic than Doom is.
Same with Hexen, where people bitch about enemies being tanky or tedious, but ignore that nothing in Hexen is as "annoying" as Halo enemies.
It's almost as if they are different games using the same engine, going for different stuff instead of just a Doom rethread.
>>
>>12013116
Here's how to tell if a map is actually good: replace all custom textures and music with vanilla ones.
If you enjoy the level and encounter design with D_RUNNIN and basic techbase it means it's good.
>>
>>12010095
Ice episode is pure cancer, it was so bad I dropped the game there. Later I picked it up again, struggled through it, and then it got so much better it's not even funny, especially the expansion hubs. But Shadow Wood is absolute irredeemable shit.
>>
>>12013153
Not only is he talking about a different game, but the level you're talking about takes like 5 minutes to beat
>>
>>12011792
>I have barely touched Heretic ever, but it does give you a bunch of powerups and items to put to use, does it not?
Usually, yeah. It can be easy to fall into hoarding trap despite knowing about "you can only carry 1 of each item between levels" thing, but there're more available or hidden on each map for a reason.
That's actually something I felt Faith Renewed lacked. It's not like there was a substantial lack of items in its maps, but there was certainly more focus on overloading players with ammo. Maybe it's more organic with Modifiers on though, I don't know.
>Heretic is supposed to give you Tomes Of Power
Not just the Tome. Time Bomb is actually quite nice for when you drop them when running through a crowd of enemies.
>and I wonder if anon has been putting those to use at all?
We can't know for sure unless he replies. Maybe he did, maybe he didn't use enough of them due to aforementioned hoarding issue.
>>12012232
Come out of closet, anon. Don't hate yourself for being trans.
>>12013130
>>12013134
Not only Heretic doesn't play like Doom, but Hexen doesn't really play like Heretic either. I actually don't like how Nightdive/id had them bundled in one package for a re-release because it does a disservice in presentation to each game included.
It's very ironic how this also led to an issue in Hexen where enemies have infinite height attack reach... At this point, they're not patching shit I guess.
>>
>>12013154
I got the name wrong, by I was still talking about Heretic which has awful episode 2 with ice levels being especially awful. And then it gets better with each next episode.

Doom would only figure out SSG's necessity with the Plutonia Experiment: most of pistol start D1 and D2 are spent playing Punch-Out! with the bruiser brothers or shotgunning them. Heretic, on the other hand, was already balanced around having the crossbow as the workhouse weapon (and it turns into a meatgrinder with the ToP when you need it to!).
>>
>>12013925
Wait, should I not be forcing the player to use a shotgun instead?
I always thought of the SSG as a treat weapon to be reserved.
I don’t mind shotgunning cacos and hell knights, though barons can be a bit tedious.
What’s the optimal SSG to shotgun ratio?
>>
>>12013936
If you're gonna have arenas composed of alot of mid-tier enemies like Cacodemons, Hell Knights, Mancubi, Arachnos and Archviles (basically everyone in Doom 2's enemy roster who has actually fun attack patterns), shotgunning them fucking sucks, yes.
>>
>>12013865
New recommendations for stuff which feels oldschool? Gee, not entirely sure there, I think D2TWID is one of the best .wads designed to feel like really oldschool stuff, but it's not exactly new anymore either.

>>12013936
>I always thought of the SSG as a treat weapon to be reserved.
I would say that depends on what your goal is. There are good ways to do exactly that, but fighting a lot of tough enemies with the regular SG really is a grind and a chore.

If you wanted to have a lot of shells around but also have the SSG remain a treat, then instead give the player a launcher with a limited supply of rockets which they'll use to take on stronk enemies, and then maybe hide the SSG in a secret, or they get it later in the level.

Works so long as it's being played by somebody who uses the other weapons, fucks up the ones who tunnel vision on the SSG but it's the only way those fuckers might eventually learn.

>Ritual, a singleplayer episode
I recall in my time playing Quake mods that actual episodes are very rare and few. Most people just like making "map collections" that are disconnected from each other but all featured int the same file. Cool to see this for a change.

Sure, but you don't give the player ONLY the SSG for five fatasses, you just give him the SSG in addition to other stuff because you're about to haul out more tough monsters.

>put a plasma gun in an optional room
>level becomes way too easy
How do I fix this?
If you go to the optional area first, which has a difficult encounter required to clear it, it makes the key room too easy.
I want to reward the player for exploring, but not trivialize the rest of the level. Do I just add more monsters, forcing the player to think about how the use ammo?
Do I reduce the amount of cells?
>>
>>
i just wanna say duke 3d nuclear winter is the laziest fuckin thing ive ever played
>>
>>12014527
Make the player have to fight to win the plasma, among other things, and also make it so that grabbing the plasma means another fight becomes tougher later (maybe by opening an additional monster closet).
Not so much that it just eats their entire use of the plasma, but enough that it doesn't automatically make everything easier.
