The PC Engine game was the originator as it was an attempt by Red to make a multimedia property, and the anime is based on it. Also it got a mex dub.

16-bit Madden actually ended up influencing score overlays and stuff for TV football, so it's not totally off base. They're also extremely fun, though I prefer the presentation of Bill Walsh College Football on Genesis in the same engine.
