Why are so many criticisms of beloved retro games from modern sources? Calling things like MGS or FF7 “movie games” doesn’t show up in contemporary sources. Same with calling Super Mario 64 or Ocarina of Time to clunky. Is it natural for this divide to happen and is it a worthwhile discussion?
Just sour grapes because they werent alive to witness the revolution of 4th and 5th gen games. Now all they get are derivatives. We boomers literally shaped the world as it is now, zoomers just live in it.
It's not limited to games, some people just like to tear down iconic things from the past. Either because they don't appreciate or understand them personally, or just out of contrarianism.Though calling things clunky is more about standard control schemes and camera systems changing over time, so it doesn't match what people are used to playing.
> from modern sources? If your only 'modern source' is this shitposting board then I guess yeah
>>12008350>Calling things like MGS or FF7 “movie games” doesn’t show up in contemporary sourcesWhile I disagree with describing FF7 that way, MGS has always been recognised and criticised for this:https://web.archive.org/web/20061112121025/http://www.gamespot.com/ps/adventure/metalgearsolid/review.html>Plus, do we really want games that are more like movies? If Hideo Kojima, the game's producer, was so set on this type of cinematic experience, he should really be making movies instead of games. While Metal Gear Solid currently stands alone, it stands as more of a work of art than as an actual game. It's definitely worth purchasing, but don't be surprised if you suddenly get extremely angry when you finish the game the day after you brought it home.>Posted Sep 25, 1998 12:18 pm PT
What do you expect?Game journos rarely criticize big heavily marketed titles like that
>>12008373>game journosI don't think OP is just talking about game magazines and stuff. "Contemporary sources" also includes all the discussion by average people online too, which you can still read today.
>>12008350Note how many games became unplayable "slogs" in recent years.
>>12008350Some people did say it back then like >>12008372 pointed out, but most people were excited by the novelty of movie games because it was the cutting edge of technology and it was cool. In retrospect, though, they really were the beginning of the huge casualization of console games and it took people decades to realize that that's a big reason why modern games are shit
>>12008350I always thought those games sucked.
>>12008520The supply of time remains finite while the supply of games has become infinite. No one has time even just for a casual run of only the games they've bought on purpose.
>>12008575the objective of playing a video game isnt to play every video game. When you boot up a singular game its not part of the collective of all media ever produced. Its not a checkbox on your list, you arent playing a list, you are playing 1 game. Devote your focus and energy on one game and dont stress about how your retroachievement score isnt seeing exponential growth because the game you picked is taking too long to beat.Your premise is also flawed, there is a finite number of games worth playing and I shouldnt need to tell you this but its increasing at an astronomically slow rate. You dont get anything for playing them all either, your goal should be to maximize your time playing good games not rush through them to get to another good game.
For me it was that guy who called Ocarina a mere bunsy 3D clone
wow time changes and people use words differently? i didn't know that. break it up guys, you can't call people call gay anymore because that used to mean happy.
MGS3's final cutscenes were the first time I heard someone derisively call a game a "movie" before. MGS4 just amplified that talk by a factor of 100.
>>12008520>>12008575Our work hours have become longer while we get paid less relative to the cost of living. Everything feels like a waste of time when we're struggling to make ends meet.
"movie game" basically isn't a criticism unless it's MGS4 levels of stupid. /v/ has run this idea into the ground.>No! I only like gameplay! I have never enjoyed anything with a story, or a scripted sequence!Shut the fuck up.
>>12008648NO PLAYING GAEM >:(ONLY HAVE PLAYED GAYME :D:O
>>12008648They have to get back to their live service multiplayer compslop. Getting to Silver rank is very time consuming. Please understand
>>12008836newfag here did this opinion exists before egoraptor kvetching over ocarina of time that one time
>>12008836i hate extended dialogue heavy cutscenes. i don't care about failed movie/tv show writer narratives.
>>12008350MGS was very famous at the time of release for being "like a movie".SM64 camera was highly criticized by contemporary critics as the worst part of an otherwise amazing game.Never heard much criticism of OoT camera, only criticism I recall of the time of release was that the textures could be a bit low-res and blurry.
Because modern game journos are shitty creatures and want to demoralize you by saying "That thing you like is actually bad", or "It's problematic", or if they're feeling really chaotic, "It's actually a queer story, chud".
>>12008357>We boomers literally shaped the world as it is nowwow this world sucks
>>12008763it was probably some furfag
>>12011736No, people used to relish the cinematic touches in games. That's what things like Another World and Prince of Persia sold on.
>>12008350Super Mario 64 is far from clunky. Oot’s issues mainly stem from the enemy designs. Everything is just wait a few seconds to attack, there’s absolutely no danger enemies will stand there and swap between invincibility and vulnerability instead of actually providing a challenge with rare enemies like dark nuts which are actually fun to fight.
