The exploration, the balance between combat and platforming, the storytelling. Why hasn't anyone fully picked up its torch?
>>12008409Majority of people have troubles with navigation, so this subgenre is not for them. Doesn't help that modern gamers expect quest arrows, even GBA Metroids caved and added those.
love Metroid and Super Metroid ROM hacks. if you haven't played Super Metroid Subversion yet I very highly recommend it.
It's lightning in a bottle, Nintendo was never able to repeat its brilliance. All the bullshit blah blah we didn't make another one because there was nothing new to add to it anyway here's copypaste Mario #64576 was just cope
>shit controls>shit level design>piss easy>mostly empty hallways with barely any actionI am so fucking tired of people glazing this shit game nonstop.
>>12008802>Super Metroid Subversionoooooooooooh weeeeeeeeeethat romhack is literally Super Metroid 2 if the SNES got an official sequel.
>>12009474No you aren't. You're just sad in general. Don't pop out of the woodwork and get in the way of a conversation so that you can blame some increasingly niche fandom for your unrelated ailments.
>>12009474Everyone that says "glazing" is guaranteed to be retarded.
>>12008409>the balance between combat and platformingwhat exactly is good about the combat?
>>12008409I have fully picked up the torch, anon. Will keep you posted.
>>12008409Super Metroid hacks are better than the original. If you haven't played the 5 star hacks on Metroid Construction you're missing out.
>>12009802You okay bud? Super Metroid isn’t the only game in the genre. If anything, Castlevania is more influential toward modern gaming than Metroid. People don’t give two shits about Super Metroid anymore.
>>12009474>glazingYou must be 18 to post here
>>12008409It's short though. 9 hours for a completionist playthrough. I guess you could wring more enjoyment out of it with cheevos and romhacks/randomizerssamus.link is neato
>>120120829 hours is long enough for any game
>>12012082>9 hoursthe fuck?
>>12012090You are not a clever girl.https://howlongtobeat.com/game/9390
>>12012082how is 9 hours not enough? jarpig enjoyer?
>>12012118It cost $60 in 1994. That's like $131 today.
>>12012107I don't care what your chart says, you didn't play the game if you think 9 hours is a fair estimate for Super Metroid.First 100% playthrough shouldn't take you more than 6 hours. And that's generous.
>my first Metroid was II>loved it, still do>people on the internet try to make me dislike a game I like, while praising lots of soulless modern metroid ripoffs
>>12008409>putting half your post in the fucking subject box
>>12012131worth every cent.
>>12012082The first time I beat Super Metroid I had like 15 hours on my save file, which doesn't count all the times I restarted after dying to bosses or spent way too long exploring and then died before finding another save room and had to restart. Those How Long To Beat times are not based on realistic blind first playthroughs, they're based on ideal conditions of a player already knowing where to go and never dying. That said, the fact that you CAN beat it so quickly IF you know what you're doing is exactly what makes it so replayable, which was even more important in the early 90s when you didn't necessarily have a whole lot of games at home, so you were bound to replay the ones you had anyway. Games weren't so disposable back then, most people weren't playing through each game one time and then never touching it again.
>>12008409Because modern indie Vanias are just soulless 80 hour 2D action RPGs.
>>12012082Nine hours first play-through 100%Six hours first playthrough for better endingThree hours first playthrough for best endingSeveral more hours and attempts for 100% and best ending. Several more hours fiddling with attempting various sequence breaks just to see what might happen.
>>12008409Because it's a gigantic PITA >FINISH READING MY ENTIRE POSTfor the average modern gamer to enjoy. I got filtered hard by Harmony of Dissonance, Zero Mission, and even two non-VR Metroids back when I was new to hardcore games, but now that I know how to recognize the patterns these games throw down, and slow down and think about my tools in addition to note taking, I have loads of fun with them. Super expects you to recognize patterns that indicate where a breakable block will be and arguably more importantly was designed to be played with a physical manual that tells you the controls. Downloading a PDF, taking pictures of your screen/writing things down for later (not doing this bit me in the ass during Prime 3), slowing down, and major backtracking are so much work compared to playing any modern game with modern design comforts that a game directly inspired by these old nonlinear platformers would appeal exclusively to enthusiasts
>>12008409I baffles me how they hit the nail on the head with this game, it honestly killed the entire franchise. There hasn't been a single metroid game that comes close to the level this one did. It genuinely is the closest a game has ever come to a 10/10 for me. This is coming from a Sega fan boy at that.
>>12012257Zero Mission is about as open, just extremely compact and has the zero suit section
>>12012257I still consider Super Metroid along with the original Quake to be the quintessential video game, the sort of thing you point to as the most all-encompassing example of what video games are when asked. Like every part of it is well executed and plays to the medium's strengths, from the gameplay, to the atmosphere, to the world design, even down to the audio. There are other games I would find more replayable, others that would have an unmatched spectacle which can wow people, and more still that have a more compelling story, but nothing does it all as well as Super Metroid. I fully expect it to be enshrined as art in the same way the Mona Lisa is in a century.
>>12012248you must be one of those dudes who thinks hexen has puzzles
>>12012248The game is babby-tier. Honestly, you're pathetic.
>>12012082>It's short thoughThat's a good thing. Metroidvanias should be short and highly replayable. Fuck long metroidvanias.
>>12012808>Metroidvanias should be short and highly replayable. Fuck long metroidvanias. The replayability is the best part. I fondly remember speedrunning Metroid Zero Mission while waiting in line at my college graduation.
>>12009449Dread is decent. But yeah, Gunpei Yokoi died, and, with him, the secret to making a good metroidvania.
>>12009449Losing Yokoi had many consequences.>>12008409Because they are slop cobbled together on some game maker engine. Even if the design was good (it never is), it has a cheap look and feel that intrinsically conveys a lower quality experience.
>>12012140good post
>>12012137Based. Hiwever learn to greentext.
>>12012248>Because it's a gigantic PITAYou're a baby bitch faggot.>>FINISH READING MY ENTIRE POSTStopped reading there.
I only play the deluxe mod, sorry but I can't go back to the original controls
Honestly my favorite part of Super is all of the sequence breaking shenanigans you can do. As far as I can tell, no other game comes close to it in that regard.
>>12013824People try to say that Zero Mission has just as much, but the difference is that most of what you can do in Super just involves creative use of the tools at your disposal like bomb jumping, wall jumps, shinespark, etc; you apply your skills in unconventional ways to access skips and sequence breaks, which makes you feel like you're getting one over on the game and outsmarting the designers. In ZM, the vast majority of sequence breaks and skips just involve locating hidden breakable blocks that open up some new prescribed path that just feels like a planned alternate route the designers built in.
>>12013927yeah in Super you can do absurd shit like reverse boss order, purely through clever use of game mechanics to sequence breaknothing else in the series comes close to that
>>12012248>FINISH READING MY ENTIRE POSTI did, and now I regret it
>>12012783What constitutes a puzzle to you?
>>12014161I think reverse boss order is done through abusing glitches, which obviously isn't intended. By that logic, Castlevania: Circle of the Moon is equally as open because you can use the card glitch and another glitch using a summon to teleport into the final boss room and win in less than 5 minutes
>>12009474>it's shit and easyguaranteed never played
>>12009474>glazing
People online are insulting me because I don't hail Silksong as the best metroidvania ever. It's good I just don't like the flash aesthetics
I probably could have made my own thread to ask this, but whatever. I'm playing Zero Mission right now, it's the first Metroid game that I've played. I have to ask, is Zero Mission's atmosphere a notable departure from the rest of the series? From what I understand, Metroid games are supposed to almost be horror games in terms of their atmosphere, but I'm not really getting that out of ZM thus far.
>>12009474back to /v/ with you
>>12008409The ship reminds me of him.
>>12012260And block some upgrades if you try to sequence break...
Metroid has always been a consolized run and gun for casuals. I would rather play Contra.
>>12018026Keep playing. The overall vibe is very Alien (1979) and Aliens (1986) inspired. I first played ZM over 20 years ago and it sent me down a rabbit hole of autistic obsession with those movies that positively affected my career path.
>>12018026>From what I understand, Metroid games are supposed to almost be horror games in terms of their atmosphereYour understanding is warped by listening to retarded exaggerative zoomers who are scared of their own shadows. They would also lead you to believe that Mario 64 is a horror game.
>>12018026>From what I understand, Metroid games are supposed to almost be horror gamesThis is really only true of Fusion and Dread. The rest of the series are not really "horror" at all.
>>12018456
>>12018482That's just a fun sci-fi romp.
I want to make a Metroid competitor, I've made some really great 2d/3d prototypes but man... as creative as I normally am, I can't get away from Sci-fi and arm cannon shit!
>>12012137I really enjoy this and think AM2R is one of the best Metroid games.
Only Metroidvanias at the same level are ESA, HK and Silksong (not a meme, I like HK and its sequel).Even then I think Super Metroid has superior level design and atmosphere.Your best bet for "similar experiences" would be ROM Hacks, such as Subversion, Vitality, Ascent, and Hyper Metroid. Those are very good and better than many Metroid games even.
Super Metroid intrigues me
>>12022170Super Metroid arouses me.
>>12022425That super metroid guy is not a dude. Need to have the sex now.
>>12015185the first rule is to have cluesrandom switches doing random stuff is not a puzzleit's a weird memory game at best
