People hate him? I think if they do, it's because they are either a Sony or Sega fanboy and are absolutely butt-devestated that his games have consistently blown the fuck out of theirs for decades.If not that, it's probably because Nintendo hasn't made a truly great game since SSBM. Along with what other anons said ITT, people also have the idea that he is responsible for stressing that story elements should be toned down or almost non-existent in various games, mostly the Mario series, and subsequently things like the Mario RPGs don't get enough love because of it.

I think part of it is people think he is presented as the singular creative force of the games he worked on, overshadowing that he worked alongside other key developers that molded the final vision. He is most memorable as a character designer and then throwing in wacky ideas when he had his foot in the door working on projects.
