this is extremely rare right? like almost categorically didn't exist. the fact that the genesis batman and robin game was made entirely by an american studio shocked me, the game has some issues but a studio that niche making something so rare shocked me, you think they'd be acclaimed like lucasarts and rare for how far ahead of the pack it was. also as a reminder:
>simulators
>80s home computer trash I grew up with
don't count

Bro, this is an extremely visually appealing game with god-tier programming but the actual gameplay fucking sucks, go play gunstar heroes instead

>>12009768
Correct answer, also joust and basically everything else from that era

I tried to get into this one but it doesn't help that it's so repetitive, same building/background keeps scrolling by constantly.
GH or Contra are much better games

Terminator for the SEGA CD is sufficiently competent (but still falls short in comparison to GH or Contra)

Well, the developers were mostly Europeans

Ghouls n Ghosts is a better run and gun than Batman

Designed and programmed mostly by japanese developers, with only some additional programming being done by western developers. A lot of the art was also done on the japanese side of things, and the western-side art was often touched up by japanese artists. If you want a western Sonic game, that would be Spinball, 3D Blast and R.
>>
>>12010180
Cerny is a honorary japanese. He doesn't count.
>>
>>12009743
Yeah, this game is weird, like god of games descended from heaven, blessed developers with a spell and supervised the whole development process in person. Literally miracle.
>>
>>12010564
>>12010717
The joke is that Cerny claims to have worked on Sonic 2's development but he didn't (some other yanks worked on it at STI, but not him)

Fix'd.

What can I say? Good western action games pre PSX/SAT are super rare if we're not counting FPS, racing or simulator type games.
>>
>>12011216
P.S. If racing games count I recommend Top Gear 2.
>>
>>12011216
I assume he's also excluding platformers, otherwise the Donkey Kong Country games would apply.

There's also Jazz Jackrabbit, but I wouldn't call it competent.

Out of this World
Starring: the kid from Zombies Ate My Neighbors, and Ogre from Quake
>>
>>12011368
I mean, OP started the thread with a run & gun. PoP is a slower game than what I think OP was looking for which is probably arcadey faster paced games.
>>
>>12011373
I mean, I don't care that OP or you are retards. It's a game with action based mechanics made by Western developer that isn't a simulation or an 80s home computer game that I grew up with.
>>
Rendering Ranger on SNES. That game's kind of nuts, considering it was almost entirely made by one guy.

NTA, but if OP meant

>Sonic 2 was mostly made by japanese devs
If you argue that it's not an american game because it was made by japanese devs in the USA, then by extension the thermonuclear bomb is a Hungarian-Polish weapon.
>>
>>12011472
Yeah but Sega was, ultimately, a Japanese company, where their president was.
Sonic 2 was 95% japanese and 5% american input (special stages and suggestions for the zones themes)
>>

Just say Jewish.

Mega Turrican
Comix Zone
DKC and some titles by Rare/Ultimate
Herc's Adventure
Defender
Super Gridrunner
Ms Pac-Man
idk if you'd count games like Road Rash and motherfucking DOOM but to me they are action games
I could probably go on but I never got why even to this day the Japanese mog everyone when it comes to action games

>>12010564
I like Sonic R
>>
>>12009743
Q*Bert
if that isn't too puzzle-y to be an action game
>>
>>12011504
doom is a good action game but I don't think it really counts in the paradigm that defined the 2d era. it's an early example of western devs finding their footing in 3d.
>>
>>12011481
>Yeah but Sega was, ultimately, a Japanese company, where their president was.

Sega was founded by Americans.

>Sonic 2 was 95% japanese and 5% american input (special stages and suggestions for the zones themes)
That 5% contribution was Mark Cerny getting everyone together. Without that, Naka would've fucked off of Sega and the game may have not even be made at all, or by a completely different team. So that's like saying that for a baby, all the work is done by the woman, a man only contributes a teaspoons amount of material.
>>
PCs in the 80s had large amounts of memory and storage space but couldn't push sprites. So Western devs didn't have the tech to make fast action games (unless you were John Carmack). Those PCs were better put to adventure games, strategy, sims, etc. It wasn't until Psygnosis pushed for Western devs to get Playstation dev kits and 3D accelerator cards brought bleeding edge graphics to PCs that the West started to catch up.

>>12012763
Fair
>>
>>12011305
>>12011309
>>12011271
Neither of these are good action games. They were western devs wanting to make third person cinematic slop but they lacked the technology.
>>
>>12012803
>Sega was founded by Americans.
Disingenuous, in 1992 the company was Japanese.
>getting everyone togerher
The fuck does this mean? He was a babysitter?
Cerny never worked on Sonic 2.

Virgin's Aladdin for me.
>>

Haha is this actually a thing?
>>

damn...
>>
>>12009743
Well, since Aladdin doesn't count, and I get why, another Virgin title that comes to mind for me is The Terminator on the SEGA Mega Drive and the SEGA Game Gear, both very competent adaptations of the film and much better than the Nintendo ones from the same time frame. A lot of people love the SEGA CD version the most, which i think is fair, though I prefer the OG one.
>>
>>12009782
Batman & Robin has great gameplay... just awful pacing. All levels should be about half as long.
